  1. thank you ! I am a natural tinkerer by habbit, but sometimes I tinker when I should have left well enough alone. This of course is why know what I know, fixing my own screw ups. I felt a sense of relief when I found this site. I can now put down the hammer and Advil and ask someone who knows. LOL :P

  2. I went to Trend Micro Housecall to do a security scan of my computer. I am running windows 98 SE. The scan reported to me that there were 2 vulnerabilities in my computer.

    1. Critical This remote code execution vulnerability exists in the processing of PNG image formats. An attacker who successfully exploits this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. (then it references) MSO5-009 for a fix.

---when I go to windows update to search for critical updates, it isnt there. When I go to the manual download page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en I see that it references Windows XP. It also has a list of EXE files to download. There is a section in the FAQ addressing windows 98 being affected but it just sends me to the update page which finds nothing. Im a bit confused as to what to do, and why the windows update isnt picking up this critical update, but the scanner is.

    2. Moderate A denial of service (DoS) vulnerability exists in Outlook Express that could cause the said program to fail. The malformed email should be removed before restarting Outlook Express in order to regain its normal operation. (then it references) MS04-018 for a fix. as far as I can tell MS04-018 , applies to XP as well. Still unsure of what to do.

  4. Here is my situation. I have an old computer nothing special. It was put together for me four years ago when funds where tight and since Ive upgraded a little here and there. I know I need memory Im running on 128mb. Can this cause my computer to restart itself? Keep in mind since the day I turned it on it has restarted itself from time to time. This is nothing new, but this time it kind of...........sneezed..........Where it turned itself off and on and off and on again quite a few times before I could make it behave.

Im up on all of the security features and have all of my updates, and upgrades. Ive had my Hijackthis log looked at an OK'ed. My system has a 650MHZ amd duron(its sad I know) ;) , 128 Megs of Ram, 2 hard drives one 8 gig, one 40 gig. I have Ethernet hookup and a few other goodies. I know I am going to need a new one but would like to get another couple of months out of this one, maybe even another year. Anyone have any advice for me?

  5. I did everything you asked. Thanks again for taking time for me.

  6. I currently have Norton Internet Security 2004, I also run spy sweeper with shields up. Before I bought spy sweeper I found that I had 2 trojans and a worm. Since then I have removed them but am plagued with the thought that there is something else there that I just cant see. I am quite dissapointed with Norton, but would like to know if maybe there is some security vulnerability that Im not aware of.
