Current Wireless Devices Lack Real Security Ephraim Schwartz, InfoWorld Tuesday, December 09, 2008 1:45 PM PST "The fact is when it comes to security if you’re using a wireless device for voice or data you might as well be standing in any international airport and speaking to a colleague over a megaphone. Oh, and you might want to slow down from time to time to let the crowd around you take notes. Although no one quite put it that way, that is the crux of the opinion of numerous experts I spoke to about using the current crop of wireless devices for voice or data. The Center for Strategic a

Unibody' MacBook users report lockups with third-party RAM One user says an Apple engineer told him an update is coming "December 8, 2008 (Computerworld) Some users of new MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops are reporting that their machines become unstable or lock up after they add third-party memory, according to messages posted on Apple Inc.'s support forum. Of the five others, three were judged to be "important," the next step down, and two were pegged as

New trojan in mass DNS hijack Single box pollutes entire LAN By Dan Goodin in San Francisco "Researchers have identified a new trojan that can tamper with a wide array of devices on a local network, an exploit that sends them to impostor websites even if they are hardened machines that are fully patched or run non-Windows operating systems. The malware is a new variant of the DNSChanger, a trojan that has long been known to change the domain name system settings of PCs and Macs alike. According to researchers with anti-virus provider McAfee's Avert Labs, the update allows a single infected mac

NVIDIA Reveals New PhysX Licenses with Electronic Arts, 2K Games Matt Peckham "Here's something to put on your 2009 checklist: more realistic in-game physics. You know, the extra math in a virtual world that can transform the flat, instantaneous stain from a tomato flung at a wall into a pulpy, drooling mess of spatter. Now insert whatever your M-Rated imagination cares to conjure in place of "tomato." They're not promising tomatoes or anything else just yet, but game publishers Electronic Arts and 2K Games just announced that both companies are licensing NVIDIA's PhysX technology, "the world

Sun Patches Java Bugs Gregg Keizer, Computerworld Sunday, December 07, 2008 7:37 AM PST "Sun patched at least 14 vulnerabilities in Java last week as it updated the popular software to version 6.0, build 11. The release notes for Java 1.6.0_11 , as Sun dubbed the update, skimped on details about the security flaws that were patched, but listed a total of 14 alerts, each of which will presumably provide information about at least one vulnerability. Those alerts have not yet been published, however, leaving users in the dark about the specifics of what has been patched. Sun also addressed 34 no

December 4, 2008 4:36 PM PST Koobface virus hits Facebook Posted by Robert Vamosi A worm responsible for sending Facebook users malicious code appears to be limited in nature, although the social engineering attack may be used again, say experts. Facebook representative Barry Schnitt said the worm isn't new; it dates back to August, although the variant that first appeared on Wednesday targets only Facebook users. Craig Schmugar, threat researcher for McAfee Avert Labs, confirmed this in a call with CNET News and said that, in general, Koobface strikes only social-networking sites. After r

Bogus Mcdonald’s, Coca-cola Promos Used As Worm Carriers
Peaches posted a topic in Security Alerts
Dec3 2008 Bogus McDonald’s, Coca-Cola Promos Used as Worm Carriers by Maydalene Salvador (Anti-spam Research Engineer) Seems like McDonald’s and Coca-Cola are cybercriminals’ promoters of choice this season–two spoofed emails that claim to be from both of the highly popular brands were recently found by the Trend Micro Content Security Team. Each messages trumpets a Christmas promotion, and instructs the recipient to open the attached coupon contained in a .ZIP file. Trend Micro already blocks such messages, and detects both attached files through the Smart Protection Network as WORM -
Will Apple Finally Admit Macs Need Protection? Preston Gralla, Computerworld "A day after the blogosphere noted that Apple has finally admitted Macs need anti-virus software, Apple has pulled a KnowledgeBase article recommending that Mac users install security software. When will Apple finally admit Macs need protection? As I pointed out in a previous post, Apple: We admit it --- Macs need anti-virus software, an Apple KnowledgeBase article recommended that Mac users use anti-virus software. Here's what it had to say: Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so t

A friend purchased a Mac laptop about a year ago and I know his computer is infected cuz a virus alert came up on my screen when I opened his mail. He doesn't believe in any security because he was told by the store sales people that the Mac doesn't require any and all is safe. Well if you believe there is green cheese on the moon, then you will believe what the salesperson said. by the way, I checked out your links ... love guitar music. Spent some time exploring and listening to videos. Thanks.

Microsoft: Xbox 360 Routs PS3 in Record Black Friday Sales Matt Peckham Dec. 2, 2008 "It's a Microsoft press release, so handle with care, but the company's claiming it did more than admirably on Black Friday, it hit the ball out of the park. Not only did the Xbox 360 outsell Sony's PlayStation 3 by three-to-one, says Microsoft, but the 360 managed its best Black Friday sales ever, including a 25 percent lift over 2007 figures. "We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other co

Version 0.90 is compatible with OSX Leopard only and the developers warn there may be "serious bugs". Exponents praise µTorrent's mix of tiny resource requirements and a feature set that matches much hungrier clients. It

November 28, 2008 - 2:59 P.M. Picasa 3: Great Linux photo software "Underneath the hood, Picasa isn't a native Linux application. It's actually a Windows program running under Wine, an open-source version of the Windows API (application programming interface). Picasa includes all the tools you'd expect from an easy-to-use photo editing program. These include cropping, red-eye editing, straighten images, and so on. It also makes all these functions easy to use, including the somewhat fancier ones such as adding tints or turning a color image into black and white or sepia. It also has features

Group Test: AMD Radeon HD 4000 series By Leo Waldock 27th November 2008 09:02 GMT “Round up When AMD updated the RV670 chip used in the ATI Radeon HD 3000 series to the RV770 in the HD 4000 line, it went ballistic and increased the number of unified shaders from 320 to 800. This change increased performance by a healthy amount and made the HD 4850 the apple of Register Hardware’s eye. But that was only the start of the story. The HD 3850 was a decent graphics card but the 320 shaders in the RV670 core didn’t give AMD much scope to conjure up a range of products based on the same chip. In
