  1. Do Social Networks Invite Hackers into the Office? "As more workers spend a greater part of their days on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, hackers have turned their energies toward spreading their malware across those services, harming workstations and company networks. That's the contention of a recent report measuring Web 2.0-targeted hacks that occurred in the first quarter of this year and was conducted by the Secure Enterprise 2.0 Forum, an industry group aimed at enabling the safe use of social media in the workplace. Increasingly, hackers have turned their attentions away from
  2. Why You Should Be Worried About Your Privacy on the Web How much of your personal information is floating around in cyberspace? Beyond your Social Security number, that is ... Robert L. Mitchell, Computerworld "She had me at hello ... or just about. Our conversation had barely started when privacy activist Betty Ostergren interrupted me to say that she had found my full name, address, Social Security number and a digital image of my signature on the Web. I had set out to discover just how much information I could find about myself online, and Ostergren, who runs the Virginia Watchdog Web site,
  3. May11 Cybercriminals Launch Tainted Windows 7 RC by JM Hipolito (Technical Communications) The official launch of the Windows 7 Release Candidate last May 5 was soon followed by another version of the software, only that this other version came with a malware surprise. A file being hosted in popular torrent sites posing as a copy of the Windows 7 RC was found to be a Trojan by security researchers. The file which arrives with the file name setup.exe is detected as TROJ_DROPPER.SPX. TROJ_DROPPER.SPX drops TROJ_AGENT.NICE. Both files are detected by the Smart Protection Network. Windows 7 Rele
  4. May11 Yet More Swine Flu Attacks by Jonathan Leopando (Technical Communications) "Spammers know a thing or two about persistence, it seems. CNET reports a new Trojan—TROJ_QHOST.TB—that is the latest to take advantage of fears of swine flu. TROJ_QHOST.TB modifies the HOSTS file of any affected system, which results to the user being redirected to a spoofed banking-related website whenever they attempt to access the real ones. By which, users are placed at risk of getting their banking information stolen and having it used by an unauthorized user. The attack is pretty similar to earlier ones th
  5. OpenOffice 3.1: The new features Better anti-aliasing, crisper charts by David Dangel "Compared to its predecessors, OpenOffice 3.1 offers a whole range of new features. Instant eye catchers are the improved anti-aliasing for graphics, better chart functionality, and the new text highlighting in Writer. However, inconspicuous new features like custom document property fields and the OpenOffice User Feedback Program are just as interesting. With half a million new lines of code, the OpenOffice developers have invested considerable time and effort in improving the office suite's anti-aliasing ca
  6. F-PROT and AVG show vulnerabilities when processing folders "The virus scanners of FRISK Software International (F-PROT) and AVG Technologies have problems dealing with certain folders. Security expert Thierry Zoller discovered CAB files could be manipulated in such a way that the F-PROT anti-virus scanner no longer inspected their contents. Zoller passed a proof of concept, including a suitably manipulated CAB file to FRISK. FRISK's response was to repeatedly claim that the sample file provided would not unpack using any of the normal un-packers (and presumably therefore was not a threat).

  9. 10 May 2009, 15:49 Prism - Mozilla minimal browser beta "The Mozilla Foundation has released version 1.0 beta of its Prism software. Formerly called WebRunner, this program closes the gap between local applications and web applications. Under Windows, Linux or Mac OS X you can, for example, use Prism to run web applications directly from the desktop or the dock. They then become dedicated program icons and can be accessed directly, without using a browser's navigation bar or having to type in a URL. Web sites can also be treated in this way and assigned a direct launch icon." Article - Heise
  10. Windows 7 Eases PC-To-PC File Transfers Microsoft's new OS makes it simpler to move apps and settings from one system to another. " Computer users who buy a new Windows 7 PC will have an easier time transferring files from their old machines thanks to improved file transfer tools included in Microsoft's next operating system. An enhanced version of Windows Easy Transfer, native to Windows 7, lets users port files, user accounts, and application settings from a Windows XP or Windows Vista system to a Windows 7-based PC in just a few steps, according to Microsoft officials. "The first thing p

  12. Google's email goes titsup (again) Gfail By Chris Williams • 8th May 2009 10:26 GMT Updated: " Google's popular free email service failed this morning at about 11am. At time of writing, access to webmail version of Gmail was patchy, and POP3 and IMAP access was unavailable. A Google spokesman told The Register the firm was aware of the problems and was investigating. He apologised to users for the inconvenience. The normally reliable Gmail service has suffered several failures recently, including a Europe-wide outage in February lasting several hours. Google blamed that incident on the failur
  13. Microsoft’s Silverlight 3 delivers decent alternative to Adobe A difficult act to swallow By Scott Gilbertson 8th May 2009 16:13 GMT Review Silverlight's future looks bright, which is just as well. "The initial release of Microsoft media player for the browser lacked many of the features Flash had offered for years. Version 1.0 was really little more than a dressed up beta and, while the current release is an improvement, it still lacks many advanced capabilities that have seen Flash set the standard. Silverlight 3.0, released as a beta recently, promises to put Microsoft's player on a nearly
  14. May 8, 2009 - 2:50 P.M. The artists behind Windows 7's whacked-out art "Perhaps the most entertaining feature of Windows 7 is its truly whacked-out desktop backgrounds --- a weird combination of Sergeant Pepper-style psychedelics, Japanese anime, and some Hieronymus Bosch grotesques. I've got information about the artists behind the art, as well as screenshots. The Engineering Windows 7 blog has an excellent post about why the backgrounds were created, and with links to the artists. To find the artists, Microsoft worked with the agency 72 and Sunny. My favorite artwork, below, was created by
  15. Microsoft releases free beta for Windows 7 upgrade advisor While simpler than Vista advisor, it fails to tell users one potentially key thing By Eric Lai "May 8, 2009 (Computerworld) " Microsoft Corp. on Thursday released the beta of a free app that helps users determine whether their PC is powerful enough to run the upcoming Windows 7 operating system. The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor gives a user's PC a pass/fail grade in four areas and checks to see whether there are any compatibility problems with hardware devices such as mice or printers or with applications. The Advisor, which is availabl
  16. Microsoft patches huge Windows 7 RC bug Applications installed prior to bug fix may be crippled, Microsoft says By Gregg Keizer May 8, 2009 (Computerworld) "Just days after it launched Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC), Microsoft has released a fix for a major flaw that slipped through testing. The patch, which Microsoft describes as an "Important" update when it appears in Windows Update, was released yesterday. Depending on Windows 7's Automatic Updates setting, the fix may have already been downloaded and installed. According to the accompanying support document, the problem affects only th
  17. 8 May 2009, 17:10 Hackers penetrate US air traffic control systems "According to a report by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), in recent years hackers have repeatedly penetrated air traffic control systems via the internet. These incidents have been sufficiently serious that the hackers have been in a position to turn off power to servers. In early 2009, hackers penetrated a web server, from where they were able to work their way further into FAA systems and were able to gain access to the personal details of 48,000 current and former FAA employees. In other cases, intruders were
  18. 8 May 2009, 09:36 Microsoft to close one hole on Patch Tuesday "On the next Patch Tuesday, May 12th, Microsoft plans to close a critical vulnerability in PowerPoint 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007. Whether this is the vulnerability discovered four weeks ago is not clear as the earlier description of the vulnerable versions did not include PowerPoint 2007, but did include Office 2004 for Mac. A patch for the Mac version of Office has not been announced and it is not mentioned in the advance bulletin. There are apparently no other vulnerability patches due on the 12th, but the Microsoft Malicious Sof
  19. ScanSafe Report: Signature-Based Scanners Miss 58% of Malware In its quarterly Global Threat Report, ScanSafe also finds rate of Web-delivered malware increased sharply in Q1 2009 May 08, 2009 | 08:29 AM LONDON and SAN FRANCISCO — May 7, 2009 — "In its quarterly Global Threat Report issued today, ScanSafe, the pioneer and leading provider of SaaS Web Security, reported that at its highest peak in Q109, 58% of Web malware blocks were zero day threats. On average, the rate of zero day malware blocks was 20% in 1Q09, meaning that companies using signature-based scanning alone could have been he
  20. 8 May 2009, 10:55 Mac worm: Please forward me "Now the full source code of what has been advertised as the first bot for Mac OS X has been revealed, it should probably be regarded as the biggest non-starter in the history of Mac pests yet, or possibly an extremely belated April Fool's joke. As Sophos's Graham Cluley reports in his blog, unlike previously sighted Mac malware, the worm (called OSX/Tored-A) tries to spread by attempting to gather email addresses from the infected Mac's contact list and then forwarding itself to those addresses. However, this process fails due to many bugs in the
  21. May 8, 2009 12:06 PM PDT Yet another reason why Macs need security by Jon Oltsik "As expected, my blog this week about Macintosh security generated a lot of comments. Some were personal in nature (author's note: I really do know the difference between a Trojan and a virus but typos happen), some were quite thought-provoking. I did receive some interesting data from a colleague from IBM. According to the X-Force 2008 Trend & Risk Report (PDF) released early this year, Mac OS X Server and Mac OS X top the list of operating systems with the most disclosed vulnerabilities for 2008. Each acc

  25. Microsoft Gives Controversial Antipiracy Tools New Name Elizabeth Montalbano, IDG News Service Thursday, May 07, 2009 11:20 AM PDT "Microsoft has rebranded its Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation system in Windows 7, likely an attempt to shed the controversial image of the antipiracy program. The company said Thursday it is renaming WGA "Windows Activation Technology" because the name more accurately reflects the way the technology works, according to comments on the company's Web site. WGA, which Microsoft introduced as an add-on to Windows XP in 2006 but built directly into Vista, ch
