  1. As most of you know, we have a pinned thread Commonly Recommended Software, Links, And Tips. Back when much of us migrated here from TechTV, JSKY and mlegg helped bring that list to BestTechie. Unfortunately, it has been quite some time since the list has been updated, added to, and trimmed. So, our new goal is to come up with a new list, exclusive to BestTechie, generated 100% from our users.

    So what does this mean?

Well, this means that we need you to post links to your favorite software, tips/tricks, and utilities. Once we have a nice list put together, we will compile a new master list and pin in to the top of this forum.

So what are you waiting for? Post your links as a reply to this thread.

Here are two programs that are small and easy to use. Myabe you will consider adding them to the list.

System Specs-A Portable Freeware System Information Utility

    Ver. 2.65

    What is System Spec?

A Utility to produce a specification of your System's hardware and software.

With System specs you can see, save and print a completespec of your PC.

This standalone system information utility can also perform various windows functions. Additional advance info includes CPU, Drives, Applications, Display, Memory, Networking, Internet, CD/DVD Drives and more.

Download on bottom left of page. Installs on your desktop.

Choosing a multimedia player used to be a real no-brainer. However, during recent times the raft of new features and updates added to classic media players like Winamp, Windows Media Player, and even iTunes have left the apps increasingly bloated. Far from being the slick, well-oiled machines they once were, these programs have been stuffed with so much that they are in danger of ending up like a sluggish, overweight athlete still holding on to past glories.

For those looking for a fresh alternative to these ballooning apps, The KM Player could be your ticket. The application has a small desktop footprint and its minimalist interface, somewhat akin to the original Winamp 5, means that access and playback are quick and hassle-free. Like Winamp, the interface is fully skinable, and there are some nice aesthetic touches, such as the changing of colour on the player with every new track. There are all sorts of options to help you pimp your player, such as visualizations, plug-ins and playback options, but the beauty of KM Player is that these are turned on at your request rather than being forced upon you at the outset.

The application handles both audio and video, and supports a wide range of different formats, meaning that once installed, you should never need to touch another player. Video playback is particularly impressive thanks to the range of processing tools available that allow you to sharpen, change picture properties, apply filters and even make video captures from within the program.

  2. Hi tman70,

Did you get any anything on disk to install for mouse. Try the website to see if any updates available for drivers.

    Take care,

    Pat

    Thanks novi,

This mouse only cost about $10 or $15. There was no cd with it. The web site says no driver is available. Guess it just uses a generic driver.

Guess this computer doesn't like a usb drive left plugged in the computer.

    Thanks for the advice.

  3. HP Pavilion XE783

    WXP home SP3

    FF 3.0.5

    Hi Everyone.

Just got back from spending Christmas with the grandchildren. They gave me a Gear Head mp2000wu wireless mouse for Christmas.

This computer only has two usb ports. I use one for the printer and I have a 4-port usb hub hooked up to the other. Never had any problem using two or more ports at the same time on the hub.

Last night I hooked up the wireless mouse and it worked fine. Nothing else is on the hub. I shut down normally and this morning when I booted up it went to the first screen that says:

    HP

    INVENT

and would do nothing else. No beeps or anything. Removed wireless drive and rebooted and still just the same screen. Waited several minutes and shut down.

Removed 4-port hub and installed old mouse with cable and rebooted.

After about two minutes it started to boot and now the computer is working fine.

Is there something I need to set to get the wireless mouse to not lock up the computer on boot up?

    Thanks.

  4. No one, myself included, has asked what Themes or Extensions you use with Firefox.

If you post that, someone might recognize a known problem.

Sometimes there are conflicts among them (T's and E's) that will lead to a problem.

I'd have to look back in my backups to give you an example, but I've seen it before.

A fresh profile, linked to recent Theme(s) and Extension(s) usually will solve any issues.

    Themes:

    Walnut For Firefox 1.8.43

    Extensions:

    Adblock Plus 1.0

    All-in-one Gestures 0.19.1

    ChromeEdit Plus 2.7.2

    EbayNegs! 0.7

    FEBE 6.0.3

    Image Zoom 0.3.1

    Nightly Tester Tools 2.0.2

    Password Exporter 1.1

    Print 0.3

So far the Bookmarks menu is still working right after I re-cloned the Hd.

  5. Other programs will do similar; but not firefox.

If it is still running doing something maintenance wise such as installing an update or cleaning your private data , or downloading something in the background and you close it and then change your mind and re open it; it will instead of giving you a warning just create a new blank profile with default values.

It's warns me -- and by "warns" I mean "displays an error and exits". AFAIK that's been the default behavior for years.

I have at one time or other have clicked on the "X" instead of the "-" sign and then when I restart FF it says there is another FF running and to close it first.

Pete_C's post explains why I have at times got that warning. Thanks Pete.

However my original problem started after the computer had been off all night.

  6. As you seem to have experienced,

I've seen Firefox "suddenly" break or act strangely, even when I'm not personally playing around with it.

But for the most part, it's one of the better browsers (my favorite) around.

I like that I can change almost any setting (at my own risk) to make it look and behave the way I prefer.

"Out of the Box" it's quite stable and reliable.

    ----------

Is there any chance you moved windows around to look at something else then closed out?

    (That might explain the repositioning).

    ----------

    Or was there a crash/reboot?

(Grasping at straws a bit here).

I get a similar situation with IE when it crashes, it forgets where windows were.

    (Just curious).

I also like FF because I can customize it to my preferences which are most likely not the same as yours.

I closed out a web page and then shut down the computer as I always do.

Maybe it is a glitch or a bug in FF.

So far everything is working fine.

    Thanks for the info.

  7. Did anything update in between?

    A Theme or Extension?

That might have changed a setting (or reset it to a default) that changed the positioning.

    ---------

Just in case, you might try copying the folder...

    C:\Users\<Your Account Name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

... to a secondary folder for quick backup/restore.

    ---------

I do this at least daily, since I tend to play around with settings a lot.

    ---------

I don't know of anything that updated. This is the first time this has happened since I have been using FF. I'm sure someone, somewhere has had this problem and solved it. I have yet to find anything. Would like to understand the why and how of it though. Appreciate your tip and will keep it handy along with my cloned HD's.

    Thanks.

  8. I have fixed my problem but have not solved the "WHY" it happened or how to correct.

I keep spare Cloned HD's that I clone every week or so in case I have a problem.

I can not find anything to help me solve this problem even though I also posted on the MozillaZine forums and tried a search on their forums. Probably wasn't wording the search right.

so I just cloned my spare Hd back to my main Hd and now the links and sub folders all open to the right side again.

  9. Windows XP Home SP3--Firefox 3.0.4

Last night when I turned off the computer everything was fine.

This morning I turned on the computer and went to Firefox Bookmarks and clicked on the file for Newspapers. The folder where I have several links opened on the left side of the dropdown menu. It has always opened on the right side. I did a restore where I knew it was working and that seemed to fix the problem until I tried to open another newspaper and the folder opened on the left side again.

IE favorites opens subfolders on the right side.

Can anybody tell me how or what I need to reset so Firefox bookmarks subfolders opens on the right side and stays there?

    Thanks.

  10. Is this part of ATT's new fiber optic network? If so, I'd jump on the chance. ATT is really going after the cable companies, so I bet you'll be able to save some cash.

    Thanks for replying Bubba Bob.

Yes, it is their new fiber optic network. They will be signing up customers the 22nd of Dec. It sounds good with the phone, cable and internet from one source and the rebates for signing up. Will have to check the "Welcome Package" out when it arrives in the next few days. :) :)

Forgot to say they will be sending me a modem to hookup and check their internet speed against comcast at the same time. Also the modem is mine free of charge as they will not be renting any equipment once it is in the house. Lot to check out.

  11. I just had a visit from a representative of AT&T informing me about their new Internet and TV service is starting in my city the end of this Dec. They said their service is faster and cheaper than Comcast. Also I could pick and pay for only the TV channels that I wanted. I am interested in saving any money that I can as I am on a fixed income, if I can maintain my current level of service.

Do any of you have any information about AT&T's new cable service?

    Thanks.

  12. Priceless ..

Billy Graham was returning to Charlotte after a speaking engagement and when his Plane arrived there was a limousine there to transport him to his home.

As he prepared to get into the limo,he stopped and spoke to the driver.

"You know" he said,"I am 87 years old and I have never driven a limousine.

Would you mind if I drove it for a while?"

The driver said,"No problem. Have at it."

Billy gets into the driver's seat and they head off down the highway.

A short distance away sat a rookie State Trooper operating his first speed trap.

The long black limo went by him doing 70 in a 55 mph zone.

The trooper pulled out and easily caught the limo and he got out of his patrol car

to begin the procedure of writing the driver a ticket.

The young trooper walked up to the driver's door and when the glass was rolled down, he was surprised to see who was driving.

He immediately excused himself and went back to his car and called his supervisor.

    He told the supervisor ...,

"I know we are supposed to enforce the law....,But I also know that important people

are given certain courtesies. I need to know what I should do because I have stopped

    a very important person."

    The supervisor asked,

    "Is it the governor?"

    The young trooper said,

"No, he's more important than that."

    The supervisor said,

    "Oh, so it's the president."

    The young trooper said,

"No, he's even more important than that."

    The supervisor finally asked,

    "Well then, who is it?"

    The young trooper said,

"I think it's Jesus, because he's got Billy Graham for a chauffeur!"

  14. Ah! It could be the corrupted Firefox that is the problem. I would save the profile to a folder then uninstall Firefox completely then reinstall it.

I posted here "http://www.besttechie.net/forums/Browser-Web-Page-And-Fonts-To-Small-t14562.html" the problem I was having with Firefox after the crash.

I used FEBE extension and saved all bookmarks, passwords, Themes and Extensions in a separate folder and uninstalled Firefox completely including the profile and by doing a search and using CCleaner. I then reinstalled Firefox 3.01 and added everything back, but still had the web and text size problem in Firefox and the shut down problem.

I believe the firefox crash did something to create both problems, but I have not found anything yet. I thought it had corrected itself, but I was wrong.

This started a couple of days ago. When I first log on and the few startup programs load and the desktop appears, I can go to "start-turn off computer" and I get the menu with the 3 options.

After we use the computer a while and then try to shut down by going to "start-turn off computer" we get an hour glass and computer will not shut down. we have to do a hard shut down.

I have run all scans and everything comes back clean. I have run "scannow sfc" and it finished.

What should I be looking for to correct this problem?

    Thanks

What antivirus do you have and do you have its automatic updater turned on?

This sounds like what happens with Mcafee Internet Security or Antivirus (although it could happen with any application with an automatic updater) when the updater checks for an update and is told to standby . It has set things in motion to receive the update and install it but for some reason (blocked by firewall, their server is busy or down, just dropped the connection...) it never gets it and is left standing by.

Try disabling the updater and manually killing your antivirus and see if you can shut down.

A little more "in depth" than Task Manager is Process Explorer from http://technet.microsoft.com/

    Hey everyone,

I just got back home. Already miss the Grand-kids.

Pete_C--- they use PC-cillin and I did not think to check their settings. I did disable it and booted the computer, however you have to go to several different web sites and stay on for a while to get the shut down option not to work. I did not want to spend to much time surfing without virus protection.

As I said before, I had downloaded MS updates and everything seemed fine until they all came back from vacation and got on the computer and that night Firefox3.01 crashed on me when I went to open it. Profile was corrupted and the only way I could change Web and Text size was to use Crtl +\- and that was when I noticed the "Start-Turn Off Computer" menu did not show and all I got was the hour glass indicating that something wasn't shutting down.

garmanma--I think I will let them stay with Task Manager for now to keep it simple.

Thanks for the URL. I'll look at it more in depth later.

  16. I have check their programs and updated everything that I could, like flash player, java, and others.

Nothing in Device Manager has a yellow or an exclamation mark, so I guess everything is alright there. Just ran "sfc scannow" again, but it does not tell you if any files are bad or replaced. So I assume it is alright also.

I shut down all startup programs in the Start Up Control Panel, but could not really tell if that made any difference as the shut down problem only happens after we have been surfing a while.

They will have to use the Task Manager to shut down as I am leaving for home tomorrow and it will be some time before I can come back.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

  17. Run Disk Clean and defrag. Also clear Firefox's cache.

I use JKDefrag and I always clear my personal data in firefox when I shut down. I also use ccleaner. Just a habit I do when I log off.

I did run Disk Clean and found a WebClient/Publisher that had not been cleaned. It is something she use's in her business. I think before I was not giving XP time to clear it's memory at shut down in the Task Manager. Trying to get G-Kids ready for school tomorrow(lol). Anyway it seems to shut down from Task Manager now the couple of times I tried it, but still won't from start.

  18. What was the last thing downloaded/installed/done before this problem started?

Maybe try a "system restore" to a day before this problem started.

With Task Manager open look to see what is using the most resources when the shutdown problem occurs. This may lead to the problem program.

    Thanks Guys,

The last thing I downloaded was MS updates last Tuesday(1 or 2 critical and 2 software). I did not notice anything different. My son and his family came back from vacation that Friday and two adults and two children took over the computer. My son was the last one and he said all he did was open an advertisement from an auto parts house where he buys parts.

He got up and I sat down and Firefox 3.01 crashed on me and I had to make a new profile and reinstall it to get it to work. After that was when I noticed it would not shut down every time you went to Start. I had erunt on here and tried several different restore points, but the restore made no difference.

I've just tried "shut down" from the Task Manager and it hung at "now shutting down" even though it was working a few minutes ago.

The only thing I see in task manager is things related to PC-cillin. Everything else looks normal.

  19. Instead of doing a hard shut down, give the pc the three finger salute,

and bring up the Task Manager, then click on "Shut down" at the very top,

ans then click on "Turn Off".

Tip: I always turn off router to disconnect from the internet just before turning pc off,

and then when turning PC back on, I wait until anti-virus/malware programs and firewall are all up and running before I turn router back on, and then I reconnect to the internet.

    Thanks Sultan,

I had not thought of doing shut down with task manager. Never too old to learn and I did learn something new today.

That will work for a while until i can find out why they can't use the "Start-Turn off Computer" option. If I don't, her other family members will end up creating problems, I'm afraid.

Any suggestion on the start problem?

  21. Thanks Belthesar,

I was able to make everything bigger by going to Navigation Toolbar-View and using the zoom function. but I have to adjust it for every web page it seems. At least now I can read them. I had another problem trying to shut down. I went to start-turn off computer but no options came up. Just the hour glass and it froze. Doing a hard shut down a screen popped up and said the program was not running. I did a "scannow sfc" and it seems to have corrected that problem as I now have the shut down option menu.

Computer was fine all week and I even installed MS updates Thursday evening. Do not know who did what yesterday, as everyone just got back from vacation, and they all got on the computer. I still can not get fonts to change using Tools-Options-Content-Default font-Advance. I tried setting them as high as they can go and nothing changes.
