Marty, 10 gig Hard Drive is a bit on the small side... what percentage of your Hard Drive is being used?
hi sys uses 2.19.used space .and 7.35.free space
so i dont think it is hdd space .my sys used to be very fast before i installed sp2
with the same specs.ive disabled my desktop background and the screen saver.
to try and speed up the start uphut down is just as slow.tho read where xppro rewrites the registry at close down so that maybe the reason for the slow close down..if i could determine the reason for the slow start up i would take measures to fix it

Hi Marty,

hi -win xppro- 256 mgs ram-.10geg hdd.av scanner avg-Adaware-
these are the main items plus- sp2 75mgs- cpu 601mghs
before the win up date.it was reasonably fast.but since the up date it has slowed
but im not sure if this is the reason or not.
thanks

is any one having bootup slowdowns to their sys.
my boot up takes at least 2 minutes .and that is quite slow for my xppro.
i read where sp2 will slow the sys down but surely not that slow ive tried al sorts of cleaning my sys.disk cleanup -defrag you name it ive done it.
i installed task lists so i can compare the task manager entrys to the task li9st entrys and it all seems in order.they are all legitimate entrys as far as the task lists goes.
when i press ctrl alt delete
it high lights AVG so that may be the culprit.tho im only guessing
any ideas

Hey y'all, keep it civil now please.

While I'm not a big fan of that type of script either, I also know that it is completely harmless as it only grabs info that is already public knowledge, only YOU can see it, and it cannot be used aginst you in any sort of attack.
I have to thank dknoppix for his understanding and removal of that script so promptly...I know it does throw many folks who don't understand it, into a frenzy.
I recieved many requests from G4 members to remove those scripts, but since it wasn't a violation of any rules I couldn't. I know we lost Bill Melanson because of it but I couldn't make him understand that only HE could see it and it was nothing that could be used against him.
So just a reminder to all, the script is harmless, only the user can see it and it is not information that can be used against you.
Proof of Concept - My IP is 24.72.70.214 accesscomm.ca - I have no fear of posting this since anyone has access to this and it's not enough info for an attack.
Remember, if you have a question or concern about something, PLEASE PM an Admin or Mod with it instead of starting an Anger thread on the boards.
Happy Computing!
Dave
him chappy yes it did throw me abit.in regards to bill malleinson.i had this ip thing when i first joined g4 and bill talked me into going to world start message board.
where it isnt allowed one poster tried it but got banned.im not angry with the young man concerned.but from posters who condone this sort of thing.my Q

go to your bios and make sure the right floppy is enabled .
floppys are tempremental things.i ahd trouble with mine .and i bid for one on trade me and i won the bid .when i went to install it i inserted the original floppy and the dam thing worked.so i bought one for nothing.
make sure your drivers are up to date for your floppy and floppy controller
i presume it was working up until now maybe the floppy driver is corrupt

hi i want to respond to the posts on this sig thing.one of the reasons i came from g4 was because i wanted to get away from all those smart asz school boys posting this b--t and i thought comming here it wouldnt happen.
ok i know dknoppix didnt mean any harm.but it scared the s----t out of me .
g4 is the place for these little tricks.
a message board i post to world start bans this sort of behaviour .
a poster said you get used to it .well i dont like it i didnt come here for some one who thinks little tricks.are the norm.how ever dknoppix does good work here and
so i intend to forget about it.
any one who says you get used to it must be a school boy.
and have no regard for older people .
good luck dknoppix

hi team ive just had a chance to read all of these personal posts about peoples lives .and pur own troubles fade into pity for people worse than our own.
in 1986 i had a heart by pass and ive never been better.i hadent had a heart attack .
all i got was a pain in the chest.
and then bingo a by pass .
now i dont think they by pass ./all they do is insert a tube into an artery
and blow up a baloon to clear the blockage .god the marvells of tech .
i remember they thy said it was done from a compt monitor.
no wonder i became interested in compts.but there are posters here who i sympothise with.

yes tg1911 has the answer .
tje best part being a member of a board like this some will post a fix.
and i used to put the fix in a folder but now i try to rememberit and im afraid im i have memory lapses .
hate to admit it but i need to tell the truth.that way i can get help from the board .
the problem with forgetting the fixes we tend to keep asking the same Q more than once .when i was at techtv c.f.h .
i had over 600 tips in a folder and half the time i didnt know where to find.them
so i deleted them and tried to start a fresh folder .at the time i didnt have a burner so they cluttered my sys .now i have a burner.so i can put them to a cd.
god im getting carried away with this post.you guys take care.
i have a lot of regard for you people except the ones that send me that ip sig

2. Mixing It Up – WORM_MEXER.E (Low Risk)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
WORM_MEXER.E is a memory-resident worm that propagates via peer-to-peer
(P2P) file-sharing networks, particularly Kazaa and Imesh, and by mailing
copies of itself via Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). This worm
creates a folder and drops several copies of itself into this folder, using
filenames that pertain to software, moviews, or games. It gathers email
addresses from the infected system by scanning certain files for email addresses
it can send to. WORM_MEXER.E is currently spreading in-the-wild and
infecting systems running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP.
Upon execution, this memory-resident worm displays a message box. It
then adds a registry entry that allows it to automatically execute at every
system startup. To propagate via peer-to-peer file-sharing networks -
specifically Kazaa and Imesh - the worm creates three more registry entries.
This worm then creates a folder, named sysnet, in the root folder and
drops 42 files in it. It also drops another set of randomly named files in
this same folder. The filenames are formed using a combination of 70
different naming strings comprised of the titles or names of popular software,
movies, and games. These filenames are meant to entice P2P network users to
download and execute them. Read the Technical Details section of the
Virus Description on Trend Micro's Web site for the full list of naming
strings: http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyc...MEXER.E&VSect=T
This worm also searches for the following files:
C:\*.DBX
C:\*.DOC
C:\*.HTM
C:\*.RTF
C:\*.SHT
C:\*.TXT
C:\*.WAB
If found, the worm scans these files for email addresses and sends email
to these addresses. It skips email addresses with the following strings:
admi
host
kasp
micr
newv
root
supp
viru
webm
It sends email via Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) with any of the
following details:
Subject: EBAY Information
Message body: EBAY Installer...
Attachment: <files from the sysnet folder>
Subject: VISA Information
Message body: Security Tool...
Attachment: <files from the sysnet folder>
Subject: Provider Information
Message body: New account data...
Attachment: <files from the sysnet folder>
Subject: Your Crack1
Message body: Here is your crack!
Attachment: <files from the sysnet folder>
Subject: Internet Information
Message body: New account data...

marty

age is not the factor on my side, definitely! LOLZ hehehe...

marty

iwas taught that to control cookies for your benifit
you need to go to IE tools -internet options -privacy tab -advanced -check overide cookie handling -check prompt in first party cookies --block in third party cookies -check session cookies.then when a site wants to place a cookie on your sys you can accept or rejest it this way there is less chance of spy ware being depoited and a virus on your sys ive had these settings for 3-4 years and i dont have the troubles i see a lot of posters post here for.
pete_.c and chappyfrd taught me that some time ago
marty
-
just read an article in a compt mag.
and it said sp2 will have compatablity issues with third party applis .so obviopsly microsoft want us to use microsoft approved software .
ive done this so i havent had any problems.apart from my sound card issue.
but that is now fixed so im ahving a great run
hope i havent spoken to soon.my advice is think about that third party issue.if you want trouble free computer.ok i agree it is a microsoft monopoly
but if other software companys want a bit of the xp pie they need to make their software compatable.
marty

ok that put it back to size but now i cant access my spare icons .
i cant see them now .does checking the hidden icons fix the problem

Sys Slowdown
in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Posted
hi Nerelda, thanks for trying to help.il_wiccan posted a way to help the start speed up.by deleting the prefetch cache.and it has helped i little bit. but more than minute start is far to slow.so it must be some thing within my sys.and i cant seem to pinpoint it.i have a feeling it is the secutiry issues within sp2 that is causing the slow downs .i may just have ti live with it.if im going to perservere with the sp2 issues.have you tried the prefetch defrag posted by il_wiccan.
i think the code goes like this.
start run-type cmd.at the prompt type. defrag c: -b several posters who tried it said it made some sort of difference to ther start up.
good luck
marty
