  1. There are 2 versions of Winfixer. One is the Winfixer 2005 software and the other is Winfixer pop up ads. Check Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs.

Read this and follow carefully !

    http://www.spyware-removal-guideline.com/winfixer-removal

You didn't run Spybot Search & Destroy or A2 Squared yet. You need to run many programs to rid yourself of spyware/maleware since they use different ceaning engines.

Get these too : Spybot Search & Destroy

    Ewido security suite

    A Squared personal

run them all in Safe mode and reboot then lastly run Highjack This after rebooting

***Make sure you unzip Highjack to it's own folder like this > C:\Highjack and

do not run from the desktop or my documents, important it is in it's own folder

    Highjack This ver 1.99

Post your log in the Security forum in here, there is one for the HJT logs. In that thread say what you have run (above programs) and why you ran it (for winfixer)

  2. to clone/spoof your MAC address go into your setup page for the router

it is almost always in the advanced settings

but you are far more secure than most really, and nothing you can do will keep you totally secure on wireless anyway

your settings almost border paranoid really ;) I think you are more than safe, but is there a reason for so much security ? top secret documents or something ;)

  3. It may either be finding hardware that's fax-enabled or is trying to run a setup program left over from ... something. Is there a fax-modem in there somewhere (whether or not it's ever been used, I don't know if cable modems have this ability but check that out)? Have you used a startup utility to uncheck unecessary startup programs?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeah I took all unecessary stuff out of the start up too. There is a dial up modem installed, so will look at the Control Panel options for that too.

The PC is not where I am now, so have to go over later and see what is up with some of these solutions.

  4. The fax setup is part of Outlook in MS office. Go thru the outlook setup and setup either a bogus fax nmber  and user or cancel it out.

You may need to uninstall office then reinstall it and choose custom install, run all from my computer and deselect the fax portion.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Damn all these years of using Office and I didnt know it was in there too !

So when I put in my own original XP Home CD no wonder I couldnt find crap, never would have thought to stick the Office CD in ..................

thanks Rico, will let you know tomorrow how it goes

  5. I just put in a PCI ethernet card into a brand new HP computer for a friend. He got wacked by lightning at his house bad and it came through the cable and fried the cable modem > ethernet cable > and onboard ethernet port.

I then took off a load of crap that came on the HP he will never use (AOL and all sorts of crap trials). I then put on Office XP Pro too and Avast anitvirus (took off the crap Norton trial).

Now every time I start the computer it comes up and Windows is configuring the Fax service. It is looking for a file called "fax.msi".

I can't find this on this machine or any disks (these are just non MS programs anyway ~ This new HP has no restore CDs at all, apparently it is somewhere saved on one of the partitions)

So he has a real dedicated fax machine anyway, so I went into Add/Remove > Windows Setup and unchecked the Fax. I went into the Admin Tools > Services and disabled Fax in there too.

I reboot and this damn thing keeps popping up to try to configure the fax as soon as Windows starts up ...... WTH can I do now to stop this insanity.

I have searched around on search engines and nothing comes up other than these few things I tried. Lasty there is NO system restore point on this since is only like a week old too !

  6. I totally agree with Pete on the pretty window dressing apps... a waste on your resources to run all of that. If you really really want, pick one and stick with it.

Specs will help out more too.

Get Mike Lin's Start Up control panel and stop the extras you dont really need to start up every time you boot your PC.

Pete, don't you think all the Norton / Symantec could be slowing him down too ?

It is such a resource hog now... was OK a while back, but man I see so much slow downs on the PCs I have still yet to remove it all from.

I also noticed that Avast antivirus catching a lot more than Norton too.

Plus the Windows firewall is more than sufficient for most home users.

  7. these are CRT monitors and have the cable attached to them

I do have access to about 15 LCD monitors, but didn't try one of those yet

will tomorrow when I go back to do some more updates on the network

it's a distraction to look at that way, I will see if I have adobe gamma control in this PC, not sure at the moment

I have gamma control in 2 newer ones there and was nice to walk through the wizard to set up the color profile

  8. have an older buillt for you Compaq 1Ghz, 768 RAM with an nVidia ti 4200 vid card in it.

This is now used at work and just yesterday the monitor had a purple tint to it. I thought maybe someone screwed with it. So I went into Control Panel and made sure all settings were correct.

It's at 1024 x 768, 32 bit true color, 60 Hz, also went in and adjusted all the color, brightness, adobe gamma, degaussed and then found a newer driver from nvidia then current version.

Nothing worked it still has a purple hue to it, if I set to highest brightness and low contrast, obviously gone, but so is most of the color ...

This is an AGP 8x, 128Mb DDR RAM card with an output for monitor and also DVI and S video.

I tried another monitor to see if maybe was the monitor, and same damn thing !

Any clue on what can be done, I also do not have an onboard video either on the mobo. I hope not to but another card since only a work thing, no games at all here. Plus would hate to waste the

$$ and find out a mobo problem. Since is AGP, not like I have another slot to try ....

Never had a problem like this on any machine, so not quite sure what to do now.

    TIA

    Mike

  9. Funny how the HJT Logs aren't getting worked, the noobs are giving dumb answers to tech questions and Chappy gets unbanned........  Makes one say "Hummmmmm"

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

HAHA well I am not in the mood to do any right now and neither is dumbterminal. ;)

I am letting the Leoville fans flood in right now and sitting back and watching. I will answer a ? from someone who has been there for a while, or if I see a Leoville lover answer then I will go in and correct them

Anywho, welcome back chappy, I wonder how you got unbanned ....

    Mike

  10. From what i gather, the max ram is 512 and it has two slots so a 512 chipisn't going to be recognized.

The econd part of the equation is, not all pc133 sticks are backwards compatable anymore, in fact there used to be many more available years ago then there are today.

Swapp it out for 2 sticks of pc100 and go to town with it.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I agree Jen, you need to stick w the 100 speed RAM here. I have an old Compaq and it is the same way. I tried 133 thinking backward compatible, plus was cheaper to buy.... well I had to return it.

If you have a Staples store nearby check them out. I just got a 256MB of PC100 there for another desktop pretty cheap. Was K-Byte I think,

  11. Possible, it would explain why they demodded me without letting me resign, since Leo does not like me. But I think they did that just to add insult to injury.  When they said they were closing Tech Support, they did not say anything about renaming it to CFH, or about CFH returning. They said it was getting deleted. The renaming it CFH seems like an afterthought to me.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeah Pete I was suprised to see it when I got home from dinner. Everything is the same, same categ ID# and all, just a new name. All the old posts, and a million new spam ones now from all the pissed members.

Though chicky sends me a few bad mentions, she left me as a mod ?

  12. Hi Pete, and everyone else .....

I guess after having an account here for almost a year it is time to start using it

To all, we only found out yesterday sometime ! I wasn't on during the daytime and went online at 11 PM and had a message from an admin to go read a thread about some changes.

My eyes almost fell out of my head when I was done reading the news

So it was a great run there with everyone for the last several years.

I want to thank you all for making my "job" a bit easier. It was never the Tech board that had issues, it was all the other ones.

    See ya round here now

    Mike

  13. Me thinks I am going in and banning you all anyway there ! :pirate:

It would have happened sooner or later as eventually you all will get on my nerves...

    HAHAHAHAHA

Hi Dave, nice to see you again, and hello to all you who do know me.

    For those who don't, sorry.

Mike *is evil to the bone*
