  1. in case othersr are intrested

    http://www.clamav.net/

Thanks, iccaros:-) I'm currently looking at clamav, trying to figure it out, give it a try:-) Are there any half decent tutorials out there besides the readmes that come with the source code? I'll go take a look at google/linux. :D

You should get a decent idea about it looking through the config files (/etc/clamd.conf, /etc/freshclam.conf). I use Klamav, a KDE frontend to clamav, with either if you want on access scanning you need to compile and insert the dazuko module. There are other linux AV, avg, f-prot, bitdefender, antivir and possibly others.

  2. KFloppy can format a flash drive, you need to manually add the device in the "Floppy Drive" combo box.

It should be possible to add/edit a service menu to add format usb as an option(you can add services in control center > storage media). My plan was to add a format service with

    sudo /usr/sbin/mkfs.vfat %u

the problem I am having getting this to work is the specifying of the device. What I mean by this is, the default command when adding a service is konqeror %u (%u repressenting a single URL more variables here) this seems to only specify the mount point, not device file. Anyone have an idea to make this work if even possible?

Also I was looking at KFloppy's source, and there is a TODO comment for user specified devices. Maybe someone tha knows c++ would want to look at it.

    EDIT:

I added a couple lines in kfloppy.cpp to add the device passed as an arg is input in the combo box. Now if kfloppy %u as a command for the service it works (shows correct device) but wont format (must be root or in disk group to write to the device (I believe this is the problem)). As a work around I can use kdesu kfloppy %u but %u doesn't work (combo box is blank).

As a side note kdesudo (or sudo) cant open kfloppy with this error

kfloppy: cannot connect to X server

Another aside, anyone have an idea why kdesudo would need aRts to build?

  3. how about

    apt-get install kde

when I do that on my ubuntu system, it says it is going to install 396 packages

I will let it run and see what happens

    edit added later//

maybe you alredy hsave it installed. log out then log back in, but under "session" see if kde is a choice

That must pull in every KDE app available. Kdebase pulls about 40 packages but none of the extra packages like kdegames etc...

  4. Here is a chance to be a beta tester for Vista.

The end of the this month, the 27th. Microsoft will release copies of Vista Beta 2 to consumers to test Vista out.

If you want a chance to become a tester. Register here.

    Vista Beta Testers

You will need to have a Windows Live, MSN or Passport Account to log in towards the end.

Be patient, It could take time to get from page to page.

    I signed up.

Should I create a new partition to put it on( so I can keep XP) ?

    Thanks,

    Joe

    Why not use vmware?

  5. Hate to sound stupid, but what is Flux?

I am not exactly sure. In plumbing it is used to help the solder both flow and bind to the metal. I believe it is used in the same way for electronics.

It is, I've worked for electronics manufacturers and they used it and never damaged anything. Ive only seen it used for whole boards not single parts if it makes any diference.

  6. Pretty much anything that can break on a laptop will require soldering, ie: cardbus slot, usb ports etc, etc..). Soldering is the easy part, de-soldering isn't (for me at least). Considering the cost of most oem laptop motherboards it is cost effective to repair the board. It's not a particularly hard thing to do with some practice (I suck at it because I dont practice), if you have an old motherboard or expansoin card laying around practice de-soldering and re-soldering pieces.

  7. wouldn't running linux in a virtual machine be slow also? I think he would have a better experience running it on a slow harddrive nativley.

That would depend on host hardware, if he has a pentium4/athlon and ~512MiB of memory he should be ok. I think a VM is a good idea considering the hardware compatibilties he has with linux. Also vmware has several pre-built VM's (ubuntu,fedora5, frebsd, gentoo, etc), easiest way for anyone who just wants to try linux.

  8. thanks naruku, I may just go ahead and do it, I have backed up my important files already. still need ftp my kernel to my server so it's easily accessible.

Edit: as an after thought, in my case would it actually downgrade to that kernel since I'm running 2.6.16.10?

It will most likel install the 2.6.15 kernel and change menu.lst to boot that kernel, all that should be necessary is editing menu.lst.

  9. I think the problem may have been my fault. I updated it from my gentoo system in a chroot environment. The updater must have did a uname, because I got an error during 'apt-get -y upgrade' saying the module directory /lib/modules/2.6.13-gentoo-r3 could not be found.

When I rebooted into ubuntu my network and other things failed. I think this was because something did to get updated which affected me being able to load my modules. This is all just a hunch based on a little observation

If you can get your network up you should be able to continue the apt-get dist-upgrade. As a thought what kernel did ubuntu boot when you rebooted? May have booted the new kernel prematurely.

  10. shanenin,

Let me know if that upgrades the kernel also please. if it does then I need to make sure I ftp my kernel src to my server to make sure I get everything working correctly again. I might just go ahead and give it a run on the actual machine. It could just be my vmware that did it to me.

What you really want to save is the kernel config, I have yet to have a problem giong to different kernel versions with the same config. And yes it does upgrade to 2.6.15-21-386.
