  1. So today I decided that it would be a good idea to get rid of some of the crap partitions that Dell installed on my harddrive. In the process, I managed to kill grub. At first it wouldn't even get to the menu, but I reinstalled grub, and my menu was back. Now, unfortunately, whenever I try to boot, it throws Error 22, saying that it can't boot from the partition. I'm hoping that it's a simple issue with my menu.lst. Here's some info:

  2. OK, now I've been playing around with virtual machines. I've got an XP Virtual Machine going in it but there's a problem. It doesn't see any USB ports. Is there a way to make VirtualBox OSE see USB ports? (trying to get it to see a flash drive)

You probably have the Open Source version of VirtualBox (Virtual Box OSE). It has issues with USB. The closed source version works with USB for me every time.

  3. New Palm Pre won't work with old apps

Pre and Web OS are clear departure from previous phones and won't work with old Palm apps, official says

    January 10, 2009 (Computerworld) LAS VEGAS --

"The new Palm Pre, which runs on the new Web OS operating system, will not work with older applications supported on the Palm Treo and other smart phones, a Palm Inc. official confirmed.

"We're not emulating [applications from] the old Palm OS, but will allow third-party emulation," said Pam Deziel, vice president of product management, in an interview Friday at the International CES trade show. "We're figuring on having developers do great applications."

The fact that existing applications, even games, found on older Palm products will not work with the Palm Pre without third party involvement shows how important the new Web OS for Palm is going to be. Palm has said the Web OS is expected to guide its application and device development for the next decade."

  4. OK, Now I've found a problem. It refuses to mount either of my External hard drives. It gives me some weirdo message like the log file says improper shutdown and won't allow the mounting of either drive.

I get this error when I don't properly unmount / "safely remove hardware" from a windows boot. See if that's it.

  6. Well the fact of the matter is that this is the situation. These are rules decided upon by other groups at other websites. We don't have an active anti-malware info-base here at BestTechie that's hidden from everyone. Because of that, all of our helpers come here from other sites.

Like it's been stated, helpers are simply following the rules. Many of the people who have come to this decision are at

    GeeksToGo

    WhatTheTech

    SpywareInfo

    MalwareRemoval

    ASAP/Maddoktor2

    BleepingComputer

    UNITE

    And some other places.

  7. Also I agree on the whole you're not qualified to look at HiJack this logs, you're not qualified to look at combofix logs.

It's not like it takes all that much to understand them.

This is where you are wrong. It takes a lot to look at a log, identify the infections, and know how to work with them.
  8. Just throwing in my $0.02

As I used to be an active part of the malware community, I understand the need for privateness. Yes. we don't want malware writers to have full access to out defense methods. Yes, some tools should require some special training.

On the other hand, I don't know anyone in the malware community who won't admit that the system is flawed. Different sites have different rules. Different members of different ranks at different sites have different ideals. ASAP is a good example of this.

Personally, I think that the "politics" of malware removal has gotten a bit corrupted. It's part of the reason why I'm no longer active in it. The topic is often handled as a black/white issue: if you aren't trained, you get no access. In reality, many of the topic fall in the gray area.

Those are just my thoughts. As you said shanenin, it just is that way and there's not much most of us can do about it.

  9. Finished getting my Christmas present set-up yesterday. Bought a used 2.8 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB DDR2 RAM from ebay. Ubuntu 8.10 is snappy on this unit. This is my first fast computer and I'm loving it:)

Very cool hitest! Get a good deal?

Why not put 64 btt on there?

Also, what's with the Windows wallpaper?
