it installs very similar to XP(no floppy needed). My first thought is to have him make sure his computer is set to boot first from the cdrom.

edit added later//

what problem did he have when trying to install it form the cd?

he set it from the bios to install from the cd

first boot

but it wont recognise that option

i thought it may have a hidden partition

which need to be wiped

dell and hp have this

dam idea

but he has gone ahead and tried the win.2000 floppy boot

i was under the impression win2.00 was able to

boot from the cd

i will go to his email and post it back that way you may be able to help

OK, people, here's the deal. Picked myself up a nice laptop with Windows XP installed, except the XP installed is not suppose to be installed, so the computer runs really slowly, I'm talking going out shopping and coming home to find a program has just started, slow, right. So, I decide to dump XP and reinstall Windows 2000 Pro, here's the problem; How do I install the Windows 2000 from the CD when the computer can't read the CD, I've made boot disks, but I get a message saying ".SIF File" is missing or corrupted, need some help here you guys out there in computer land.

did you set the bios to install from the cd

win200 will install from the cd

you dont need a boot floppy

as long as you set your first boot from the cd

second boot from the c:drive

Did that, set the Bios for the system to boot from the cd, didn't work, reverted back to boot from floppy, go figure. Keep thinking guys and thanks for the feed back thus far.

and that needs to be wiped

so you can get you sys on

try here first

look for a wipe disk.in the disk section

http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=4928

and you may need a boot disk

from here

So, I format the hard drive, piece of cake, everything goes well, now I restart the computer using the demand "Start with CD support" as per advised, however the damn thing is telling me: "Cannot setup in DOS mode". Could someone, out there in the land of computers, advise me on how to setup up the CD or how to get out of DOS and setup the CD or give me a gun to shoot myself for being such an idiot.

Waiting for my faithful advisors to send their wisdom.

yep, did that: fdisk, format, everything except move the kitchen sink, might give it another shot. fdisking and formating, I mean, the sink can stay where it is.

Before you Fdisk-ed it, did you do "Fdisk /MBR" ?

Should clear the master boot record and reset it.

Fellas did that trick with the fdisk command, fdisk / rbm, nothing happened and I'm still in the same sit. I'm gonna fix this if it's the last thing I do. But, I'd really like to fix it soon. So, your repeated advice is most welcome, any other ideas floating around out there, people?

The first person to find out and tell me the problem, wins the prize, what' the surprise you ask? Well, if I tell ya now, it won't be a surprise, remember I'm in Japan, there are many surprises over here.

over look the bragging
