Chappy
Hiya MartyRugby has been big here for quite some time, like around 140 plus years or so.In fact, our Canadian Football League (CFL), which is the oldest football league in the world, was originally a Rugby league. It started changing rules and other things to try to make a more "Canadian"game of it, and the North American style of football was born.Yes folks, American Football was started in Canada.....loooonnnggggg before the NFL was even thought of. The first game here was in 1861 at the Univ. of Toronto, and the 1st Grey Cup Championship game was played in 1909, so this is the 97th year playing for that championship.Canada showed this new game to our American counterparts in 1874 when McGill showed the game to Harvard and played 2 matches. The first was played with old english rules and Harvard won, the next day they played using the new rules and McGill won but Harvard liked the new game better. The US game evolved from that match but it took them much longer to form leagues and teams to play with these new rules so the NFL is a much younger league than the CFL.Still, Rugby is big here and our teams do well in International competition. Our Womens teams are very strong and I hope they do well in this championship.
robroy
heh, I love rugby, played it in school. Didn't have a lot of choice when I lived in the town where it all started. Went past the playing field it started on twice a day for 5 years on my way to and from school. One time watched a game where a player had part of his ear ripped off in the scrum. He went off the field, had them stitch it back on, bandage it, then came back out to play.
