Hiya Marty

Rugby has been big here for quite some time, like around 140 plus years or so.

In fact, our Canadian Football League (CFL), which is the oldest football league in the world, was originally a Rugby league. It started changing rules and other things to try to make a more "Canadian"game of it, and the North American style of football was born.

Yes folks, American Football was started in Canada.....loooonnnggggg before the NFL was even thought of. The first game here was in 1861 at the Univ. of Toronto, and the 1st Grey Cup Championship game was played in 1909, so this is the 97th year playing for that championship.

Canada showed this new game to our American counterparts in 1874 when McGill showed the game to Harvard and played 2 matches. The first was played with old english rules and Harvard won, the next day they played using the new rules and McGill won but Harvard liked the new game better.

The US game evolved from that match but it took them much longer to form leagues and teams to play with these new rules so the NFL is a much younger league than the CFL.

Still, Rugby is big here and our teams do well in International competition. Our Womens teams are very strong and I hope they do well in this championship.

heh, I love rugby, played it in school. Didn't have a lot of choice when I lived in the town where it all started. Went past the playing field it started on twice a day for 5 years on my way to and from school. One time watched a game where a player had part of his ear ripped off in the scrum. He went off the field, had them stitch it back on, bandage it, then came back out to play.

in one game i saw the canadian full back

kick five straight goals not many men do that

johny wilkenson from the lions team in the last mens world cup

kicked all there goals

so that lady must be very good at that role

probaly the canadains

got there rugby roots from from

some of there english settlers

and modified it to suit there population

i know we did

to try and speed up the game make it more spectacular

and it payed of

even at club level we get crowds of 15 -16 thousand

international level we get 50.-60 thousand

from population of 4 million.

i dont go to those games any more

as tv brings all the matches to your sitting room

we are hosting the next world rugby cup

and they are extending their venues to seat

80 to 90 thousand

as the game is now professionl they can afford

through sponsership

i see australia. nz. south africa. pacific island.

have invited the canadian and usa

to participate in a round robin

developement tournyment

so it will improve the game in their areas

and i believe the southern unions will fund a third of the

tourny

i have to applogise to the american rugby followers

i didnt know americans have participated in the last

9 world cups

one year they finished in the first 3

but it is still amateur there

so they need the competition
