xxkbxx
Hello everyone, I've got two computers at home with XP Pro licenses that are running XP Home because I don't have the Pro CD. Basically I need an XP Pro CD without paying for the license, since I already have 2 that aren't activated. Is this possible/legal?
Honda_Boy
I've used the same XP home cd to install on 3 computers (one the disc was liscensed to) with out any problems so just buy one off ebay. All you'll have to do is call MS activation number and tell them you own the liscense to them but do not have the original disc and they'll give you the activation code. Worked on the Compaq and my friend's HP. Oddly enough the internet activation still worked even after I had to reinstall windows on this system. Repair installed first for new mobo, cpu but things weren't working right so I reinstalled. It still saw it as the correct computer.Any way, any XP pro disc will work. shanenin
I don't think so. I bit the bullet and purchased an xp pro oem cd just to do reintsalls. I have only used it once(in 8 months time). I still have the coa and not yet activated it. In time I will be able to sell it.edit added later//I also purchased a 98, 98se, xp home oem for that reason. I had a computer with windows xp tablet edition I needed to reload, but I did not have that disk. Edited September 11, 2006 by shanenin
hitest
Is this possible/legal?It may be possible, but, it is not legal. At Besttechie.net we do not condone, promote the use of software that is not fully recognized as authentic by Microsoft. Please do not ask questions about obtaining software that may be less than legitimate. If you are getting a Microsoft CD without a license it is pirated software. I'm closing this thread. hitest
Hello everyone, I've got two computers at home with XP Pro licenses that are running XP Home because I don't have the Pro CD. Basically I need an XP Pro CD without paying for the license, since I already have 2 that aren't activated. Is this possible/legal?First of all I would like to apologize to you, xxkbxx. I have decided to open this thread again. I have done some investigating with the kind help of Honda Boy and shanenin. It does appear that if you have the licence and you have a Microsoft CD then you are allowed to do a repair re-install as PC repair shops do this. I went to the Microsoft site last night, but, could not find a link to where you could get a CD if you have a licence. Good luck with finding a CD. Microsoft does not like licences being switched from one computer to another so if you use the CD on the same computer as the licence then you're legal. Again please accept my apologies. jimras
A question kind of along this line.As many of you know, I have not been able to update my XP Pro (upgrade from Win 2000 pro) to SP2 no matter what I've tried. And I've tried A LOT!!!!!My question is this......My brother has a XP Pro (with SP 2) CD. Could I install that with MY XP Pro upgrade license number?Would this work and would it be legal?? Honda_Boy
hmmmm I think the trick only works OEM to OEM. IE you must have an OEM disc (like my home SP2) and an OEM Key (like the Home SP1 key on my Compaq, it was the first computer I did this on). I could be wrong though. Different service packs don't matter since the upgrade through MS is free anyway. I just don't think an OEM disc and upgrade key are compatible. shanenin
hitest was gracious enough to reopen this topic, so I don't want to make him regret it.Short answer it will not work. The following topic was posted before, since it only allows you to use a licence you already own, i do not think this is not outside besttechie policyscan be made to work Edited September 12, 2006 by shanenin
iccaros
with Windows XP and some other windows software, the number you type in does a check on cd name. I have built for work, Windows install cd's from OEM CD by using a List of CD names I have. from the new disk it took our enterprise License number, while the origianl disk (from Dell) would not.. This is good to have as a System builder or as a sysadmin to help het you out of jams.. and since softmart charges almost $50 for a CD with no license.. it saves customers money as its the license you are buying... not the CD.you can buy oem cd's from e-bay.here is a list of correct cd name ( obtained from my Microsoft rep for making slipstream cd's)you must use the correct cd name for the license xxkbxx
So I guess I CAN legally buy a CD without a license, but it'll have to be through eBay or such because Microsoft doesn't want retailers selling it's software where it can easily be pirated. I guess I'll have to find someone at school with the CD and then use my personal key. Thanks guys
