I have this cd drive which has been problematic for as long as I can remember. Somedays it will work perfectly fine other days it wont read disks at all. When its being problematic the drive spins up and then slows down then spins up again for mabey a minute or so. Then it finnaly stops. In My computer it says there is no disk inserted but there is one. I put my cleaner disk in there and ran it through for 20 minutes but that hasnt helped. Iv checked all the connections etc etc...

Is this drive just dying/dead? Warrenty is definately gone by now so I cant send it back. Its my secondary drive so its not essential to my system. Somtimes it nice to be able to burn two CDs at once though.

That actually reminds me. I dont think I have ever had a problem burning disks in that drive... Just reading them.

Have you ever cleaned it?

Firmware won't make a difference - CD drives just die out. I've salvaged a few by putting a vaccum hose up to it (with the tray out) while blowing air in there, but it's most likely not going to fix it.

It sounds like your laser is bad since you can still burn (the burner is a different laser than the reader)
