jimras
AND YOU THINK YOU HAD A BAD DAY!author unknownI am writing in response to your request foradditional information. In block number three of the accident reportingform, I put "poor planning" as the cause of myaccident. You said in your letter that I shouldexplain more and I trust that the followingdetails are sufficient:I am a bricklayer by trade. On the day of theaccident, I was working alone on the roof of anew six-story building. When I completed my work,I discovered that I had about 500 pounds ofbricks left over. Rather than carry the bricksdown by hand I decided to lower them in a barrel by using a pulley, which fortunately wasattached to the side of the building at the sixthfloor.Securing the rope at the ground level, I went upto the roof, swung the barrel out and loaded thebricks into it. Then I went back to the groundand untied the rope, holding it tightly to insurea slow descent of the 500 pounds of bricks. Youwill note in block number 11of the accident reporting form that I weigh 135pounds. Due to my surprise at being jerked offthe ground so suddenly, I lost my presence ofmind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needlessto say, I proceeded at a rather rapid rate up the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met thebarrel coming down. This explains the fracturedscull and broken collarbone. Slowed onlyslightly, I continued my rapid ascent, notstopping until the fingers of my right hand weretwo knuckles deep into the pulley. Fortunately,by this time I had regained my presence of mindand was able to hold tightly to the rope in spiteof my pain. At approximately the same time, however, thebarrel of bricks hit the ground - and the bottomfell out of the barrel. Devoid of the weightof the bricks, the barrel now weighedapproximately 50 pounds. I refer you again to myweight in block number 11. As you might imagine,I began a rapid descent down the side of thebuilding. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met thebarrel coming up. This accounts for the twofractured ankles and lacerations of my legs andlower body. The encounter with the barrel, slowed me enough to lessen my injuries when Ifell onto the pile of bricks and fortunately, only three vertebrae were cracked. I am sorry toreport, however, that as I lay there on thebricks in pain, unable to move, and watching thebarrel six stories above - I again lost mypresence of mind.I let go of the rope!
