martymas
hi team recently i posted about a friend having problems with the shut downs. to recap it seems the compt was restarting it self. so i went to the automatic restarts. and unchecked the box. now it gives a blue screen when it shuts down. the error notice says try disabling hardware until the problem can be pinpointed ive done all of that pete sent a post on the board to go to knowledge base where it said to fix the problem you need to reset the registry which is a nono for meso im at a stale mate the specs 64mgs ram3.8 hdd350 cputhat looks to small to run xp but ive had xp on similiar specs when i firstt startedso may be that isnt the problem.i have a feeling it is the video cardmarty
TheTerrorist_75
Win98SE would run like a champ on that PC. Those specs are at the very low end to capably run XP. A minimum of a 6-8GB hard drive would be better. Of course you would need to turn off System Restore or set it's capacity lower. Did you find and install WinXP compatible drivers for the video card? Xp's drivers on the CD are basic. Even the motherboard drivers should be XP compatible and downloaded from the manufacturer. IF you can't find XP drivers try Win2K drivers. martymas
hi TheTerrorist_75i suspected xp may have been to big for comfortbut i needed a second opinion i have a windows 98se disk but my friend insists on xp so we need to discuss the problems with the resources yes i agree about the video card drivers they are basic.strangly enough the compt goes fine apart from the blue screen.at shutdpwn when i check the automatic restarts the compt reboots continuislyso i followed normally practice of unchecking that restartwhich gives me a blue screen and the reason for the problems.ive checked all the hardware but ime at a full stop nowthe video card is brand new and as you state maybe it is the driver.---------------------------------------------how are you getting on with xp.?knowing you, it wont take long for you to master it if i can help at any time just post . TheTerrorist_75
XP is running just fine. Right now I'm in the process of changing permission settings in the firewall and further tweaking my settings. I got tired of searching for certain folders so I created desktop shortcuts to them. I installed TweakUI to help control some items.

garmanma
I know on my old Thinkpad, even though I had enough memory, I still had to flash the BIOS for XPMark
