Will appreciate anyone's time.

I have a friend who used to be able to log in to her company's website with a password and username but cannot now.

I came home and was able to get it on my computer, so I know it should work for her.

She is still using Windows 98, but I feel like it is probably something in the advanced options of Internet Explorer that is checked or not checked. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks! nancy

By chance, did she recently install a pop-up blocker or firewall? Also, is she using the Remote Desktop connection or something else?

Mark, thanks for the reply. This is a neighbor that called me over. She not only uses win 98, but has no anti-virus! So....I'm sure she doesn't have a pop-up blocker!!!! She has two favorites, yahoo and that company...only does email...!!

has she tried to clear her temp files.

and importantly her history.

sometimes if we get an error page for many reasons.

the history has to be cleared.

one way of clearing an address blockage.,

is go to,

run

type- regsvr32 urlmon.dll

press enter

note the gap between 32 and ur.

tell her there are many free

virus scanners out there

avg. avast are examples

Marty, sure appreciate your response. I cleared her temp files but never would have thought to clear history. You've taught me something new.

I know how to clear history by going through IE Internet options. Would that be just as good as doing the Run.. regsvr32 urlmon.dll? If so, I would feel more comfortable doing that. Thanks for your time. nancy

I'm surprised her company lets her log on to their system without an antivirus program. In the malware section of the forums, in the "pinned" threads, there's some good tips for protection. Most programs are free

Mark and Marty --

Which A-V free programs would you suggest for 98? That's my concern for her. The newest Norton has "2005 inside for 98 & ME" but have heard from a computer repair person that it is really too much for win98.

I don't want to give her more problems. She uses the computer very little. She doesn't have to use the company site...just wants to be able to. I would love to get something figured out for her. Am going to try the history suggestion.

Thanks again, nancy

before i try to answer your Q

when i saw your sig

nancy. i know you from somewhere else

maybe techtv c.f.h

back to the Q

my advice is for her to use avast

for a new user

it is free and tho avg and avast are good scanners

avast is smaller and better for a new user

because it dosent allow a virus to enter your sys

if a virus is detected a siren will go off and a voice

asks you what to do about

delete or put it in the vault

avg isolates it by putting it in the vault

and you delete it from there

it is a matter of personal choice

free scanners are good to day

they have to be to stay there

i use avg

it is a bit faster to use than avast

tho that dosent make it any better

i have no comment about paid ones

like semantics ,.nortons .mkafries ect

as i havent used them

tho avast and avg have their pro versions

Oh, Marty, this is such a wonderful answer. Thank you so much!

Can I download the Avast exe file on my computer without it affecting what I have now

...then burn it to a cd and put it on her computer that way? She has dial up, and

this would be so much easier if you think it would be safe for me.

I guess what I'm asking is....if I went to the avast site to get the program,

will it be like when you get any other program -- you download the .exe file

and nothing really happens or affects your computer until you run the file

to install the program?

[Yes! I am the same nancy you knew at CFH and G4. You are the one who

steered me here, and I'm so glad to know this is you. I wanted to say hello

but wasn't sure it was you yet. I was wonderboyent at other...just took off

the boy part...comes from one of my horses.]

Thanks again, Marty.

Yes you can download Avast and burn it to CD. When you download it just don't run the file. Burn the .exe to your CD. Don't forget the registering part at the Avast website to get the registration code sent by email. The program is free but needs to be registered. You can use the neighbors email address or yours. If you use yours just write the registration number down so it can be inputted into Avast after it is installed. The registration lasts for 14 months. Good seeing you back around.
