My School Sucks

Recommended Posts

my former school (it under the gov't, not the city) block Google Image because of porn. One STUPID guy, he a freshman, type down porn in Google Image then there you have it. the IT found out and decide to block it. So we got pissed off.

So most of us use proxy or use Altavista.com as google image alt. Altavista is good as Google

It's not just your school or just schools, in fact any organization that supplies Internet access has a responsibility to prevent misuse of their equipment. The consequences of not clamping down can be serious; lawsuits or damage to the system. The same thing happens at many people's place of work.

People, use your own equipment for porn searches, OK? ;)

But we are REQUIRED to use image search for several of our projects. For example, for this web site we are doing ( http://sultana.dnpen.com ) we needed to find 10 images of our disaster. Well, with our currently almost random quota times its causing allot of distress for the students. And does anyone else find it funny how the administrator has LARGE spelling and grammar errors yet still corrects my grammar? He made a spelling error while correcting my grammar! He spelled English wrong.

Have you tried Altavista or Ask as suggested?

A normal web search would turn up sites related to your subjects and those sites will very likely have useable images on them. Some extra steps, you'll get used to it.

I wouldn't be surprised if software was able to determine where images are from and prevent their display. They wouldn't be stripped of all identifiable information so the images must contain information about where they were obtained.

That still makes no sense. It doesnt solve the problem. The problem is were are using up too much CPU power and bandwith by loading images, using alternative search engines doenst help at all, and its just annoying to the students... its pointless.

My school dont block Google Image because they know we need Google Image for our project. so they use a filter. all porn and adult site is locked from my school network. For example, some site is not a adult site but the filter claimed it is, that was bull. Look, G4 forum is not adult site, but they said it is. it happened before Comcast allow dirty words in forum.

Most of the proxy site is locked after they found out we using proxy to bypass the filter. most of the student use proxy to get to myspace.com. there is one proxy that they didnt find but that proxy site is on a limit time..... Spynot.com

Intertwined catch-22s. Your school obviously has an extemely competent and efficient bureaucracy; if it offers business or administration classes, I recommend taking them.

I understand the blockage and the content...and all that shizzle, but what i don't get is why they would block the content based on bandwidth. Bandwidth doesn't have anything to do with adult this or adult that, picture this or picture that, of course there is a load process for images and documents of the sort, but if you are using a search engine, 9 out of 10 times the images are cached on those search engine server, because oddly enough, someone else is also searching for either the same thing, or relatively close to the subject.

You can limit the amount of bandwidth you use in almost any increment, time-memory-filesize, but restricting images not because of their content but because of their bandwidth (image size, load time...etc) doesn't make sense. Did you read this the wrong way?

'my bad for not reading your dedicated web page first. They didn't block Google, they put a quarter hour limit on your research. It's difficult to have sympathy, if you can't find an appropriate image using Google in fifteen minutes you're getting distracted by ... something.

Well, With my latest issues, it has gotten bad. Its a 30 minute limit (now) but not per student, per COMPUTER! http://dnpen.com/hononegah/emails.htm those are in order, from first sent. the last sent is at the bottom. now, since I (and several other students) are in a special computer course cant use google images, since the other classes use it up first hour. Same with all the computer labs.

Not hints. Alias Bugersnots has a history of yelling about the falling sky to those folks in the past. Hope he doesn't own a long black coat and play with guns....
