Ubuntu And Lycoris

hi team ive just come into a spare compt

which hasent an operating sys installed.

my Q i have

a lycoris and a ubuntu

instalation disks

my q whcih one is the easiest to get drivers for

i already have winxppro

on a compt

but ide like to try a linux

os

as long as the drivers are easy to get

any ideas

my specs are 256ram ,30gighdd.

cd rom.dialup modem.1geg cpu.

if any other specs are needed

does that include modem drivers

my modem is a xh1154 dse -56k -pci int-ham v2

and it is linux compatable

tho i think

with ubuntu the configuration is slightly different

than mandrake 9.1

i tried ubuntu before

but it was in a dual boot with xp

and xp was a bit of a nuisence

with the dual boot

ubuntu found all the drivers but

the modem driver.i think this applies to all linux osess

so i had to uninstall it

the same applied to lycoris

Ubuntu has my vote too. It is very good at finding hardware.

definately Ubuntu, just make sure that if you have to download the driver for the modem, that you download and install the headers so it can install properly. you can get he headers from synaptic.

According to the DSE site the driver doesn't work with kernel 2.6.9 or higher. You can install Ubuntu and downgrade your kernel (comes with 2.6.10 by default). Ubuntu does have pretty good hardware detection, but it cant include every driver there is. You will probably have to compile it yourself no matter what distro you choose, which is pretty simple. You can download the driver from intel (#8) that I believe is for the chipset your modem uses. Try building the driver using the default kernel on which ever distro you choose, if it wont build or load then try a different kernel. You just have to be patient, there's a good chance it wont work right away but with alittle time i;m sure you will get it.

ive accessed lycoris and it seems to be a

commercial disk

aimed at people buying the the software and components

for linux products ok im fine with that.

it has to be payed for

i accessed ubuntu.

as it was recommened to me by

the tech who configured the mandrake 9.1

modem driver.from DSE

[where i bought the dsik from for $2]

but he dosent work there any more.

that is why i posted here

i know what it was like trying to configure

the 9.1 modem driver

from the konsole

with many swears words and long hours .

but i got it on ,

and i was posting to techtv cfh.

most of the time with it .

so as naraku9333

has pointed out i need to be patient

but ime going to need your help

as i intend to install ubuntu

right now
