Mandrake 10.2 On Laptop

i am new to linux and was referred mostly to mandrake to start...

i put it on my l/t for starters as primary os...

specs:

hp pavilion n3250

477MHz k62

256mb ram

now i am having trouble getting the wireless card (belkin f5d7010) to work...

i tried to use the 'auto' feature for driver and the 'windows' feature, no luck

ive been playing with the settings and still no luck, i checked at belkin and all they offer is windows drivers (that ive found)...

and also having trouble with the touchpad, just that double click drag w/pad (not buttons) does not work...

any feed back is much appreciated!

first, if you have a mouse pluged in the touch pad goes inactive according to HP, when using other then MS on this laptop.

from the Linux incompatability list I got this on your network card.

(looks like your best hope for a workign driver is from http://www.ralinktech.com with this as the link to the drivers.. http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm but you need to know the ./configure make make install dance.. you could always post this to the ubunto board as see if they will add the driver for you.. )

Don't touch this thing with a 10 feet pole. People on the 'net have reported success with linuxant NDIS wrapper and the open source NDIS wrapper. I couldn't reproduce "success" with the open source NDIS wrapper, using the drivers linked there, nor the ones from the CD, nor the newest ones from the 'net. The card is also flaky under Windows. Did I mention not to touch this thing with a 10 feet pole?

I've successfully used the thing in Linux with ndiswrapper with a driver that I got from off the Belkin site. It's not a shitty card. Although I didn't have enough knowledge to make it work with WPA. Dist. used was Fedora Core 3 on an Acer 1362LC. Operation in Windows is flawless. Good card, good value, but there's probably a few select better ones out there, especially if you're looking to use AirSnort or stuff like that (which requires a Prism2 chipset, this is Broadcom). Personal rating: 3.5/5.

I've have also had good experiences using this card, i decided to ignore whats on the ndiswrapper site and use the driver from the cd, works fine! Im using ndiswrapper 1.2, kernel 2.6.10. managed to get WEP working, oh and it works fine under windows. Personally i think this card is great value, 4/5.

I've used this card for a while now, and it works fine both within Windows XP and Fedora Core 3 using ndiswrapper 1.1. WPA also work fine on both OS's. Card is one of cheapest around, works fine and is great value for money. My rating: 4/5.

I've tried this card under SUSE9.3 and ndiswrapper rejects the win2k drivers from the cd but accepts the win98. However, it hangs on modprobe ndiswrapper. I don't use windows, so, for my purposes, this card gets a one, but I am being narrow minded.

The drivers are GPL too;)

Although is not easy to install it, the driver works without ndiswrapping and it is quite stable (at the moment I'm using it).

I removed some text about boycotting Belkin - to that individual, thanks for commenting, but the point of this site is to let people judge on their own whether they want to purchase something that works with Linux, or something that might work by using some proprietary windows drivers. Hopefully people will make the sensible choice, but it's still up to them, rather than using the site as a call to boycott a manufacturer. Thanks, davidw.

I have no problems using this card with suse 9.3, and it flawless in XP, sucks alot if wardriving is your thing tho.
