paxman356
Suddenly, it seems, I am having a hard time playing videos in Firefox. I used to play RealPlayer videos with the plugin, but now whenever I try, it asks me to install it. Once I install it, it asks me to install it again, and again, etc. WMP isn't much better. I get nice crystal clear sound, with no video. What's going on here? My wife is the primary user on this computer, and she mostly just reads papers, plays games, and fills out surveys. She doesn't know where this could have come from.The log:Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 8:37:30 PM, on 9/1/2005Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Sygate\SPF\smc.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exeC:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exeC:\PROGRA~1\SBCSEL~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exeC:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.ExeC:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exeC:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exeC:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exeC:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exeC:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exeC:\Program Files\Hijack This\HijackThis.exeR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.htmlR1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.comR1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.htmlR0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://yahoo.sbc.com/dslR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.comR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avast!] C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gcasServ] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe"O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\SBCSEL~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [smcService] C:\PROGRA~1\Sygate\SPF\smc.exe -startguiO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osbootO4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! paxman356
Just so you know, I used MS AntiSpyware before this log was made. Video still didn't work. I still need help.
Besttechie
Hi,Your log looks pretty clean. Just a few things. I doubt this is a malware issue, so I will move this thread to the PC Support forum for further help. Just open HJT and have it tick and fix the follow, and you should be fine (with the hjt log part). paxman356
Deleted those from HJT, rebooted, still have the problem. Uninstalled and deleted Firefox directory in Program Files and reinstalled, but that didn't solve the problem. I didn't have to redo bookmarks, or my homepage, so I guess it still had stuff outside of Program Files, probably in Documents and Settings. I did try playing video in IE, and it does the same thing, although I did see that a small video played, while the larger video (which used to play) only played the sound. Even installed Opera, but it didn't like the webpage I was using: http://beeldbank.schooltv.nl/lo/po/kiesres...o&courseid=2112(click any of the highlited clips.)What's wrong with my computer? Besttechie
Hey,What version of Windows Media Player do you have? If you don't have at least version 10 (the latest version) I would try installing that as a start. The videos seem to be Windows Media Video files, so, they should play. It's also possible you're missing the codec to play the video file.So first, try updating to WMP 10. If you don't have it. If you do, or you update and it still doesn't work, try installing the DivX codec. That might be the problem, you're missing the proper codec for it the play the video. http://download.divx.com/divx/DivXPlay.exe <-- Direct DivX player/codec download.Good luck! paxman356
I already have WMP 10. I also have installed DivX before as well (4-28-05). I hadn't changed anything since I installed them and everything worked fine before my problem started. It still wouldn't explain why I have the RP plugin problem. I am not bad with computers, but I can't for the life of me figure this out.
Besttechie
Hi,Just curious, will this play? It is a direct link to one of the videos, and should open in WMP. Let me know if that works.... mms://media.omroep.nl/teleacnot/beeldbank/20031208_doos11_low.wmvNote: Just copy and paste that URL into your browser, WMP should popup. paxman356
Yeah, the low quality vids work, but the high quality do not, and RealPlayer doesn't work at all because of the Firefox plugin problem. Try one of the big videos and tell me what you see (click "Groot format" to get the big format. Click RealPlayer to get to RealPlayer.)I am off to do a system restore. I hope going back a few days will go the trick.Edit:I did a system restore, and now Firefox doesn't even start. I am doing spyware scans, this time starting with Adaware, and it didn't pick anything up. Also none with Spyware. I have to shut it down for a few days, as I am going out of town, but I think I am going to do some scans in safe mode when I come back. I will not let this win!
