Spybot Immunize And Host File Is Related?

Recommended Posts

Hi DD, (I nickname almost everyone, your turn ;) ),

I'm going to reply with a question!! Is the hosts file the same as the "restricted sites zone" in IE? Never understood what hosts file is!

If it is the same thing, I installed Spybot and SpywareBlaster on the same day. The next day I went to add "gookle" (its a cootie) to the "restricted sites zone" and it contained hundreds of entries. I figured one of those programs put them in there. Thankfully!

Hi Liz. No the host file is different from the restriced site.

A host file, stored on the computer's filesystem, is used to look up the Internet Protocol address of a device connected to a computer network. The host file describes a many-to-one mapping of device names to IP addresses. When accessing a device by name, the networking system will attempt to locate the name within the host file if it exists. Typically, this is used as a first means of locating the address of a system, before accessing the Internet domain name system.

So simply, if the hostfile contained this:

69.11.11.111 auto.search.msn.com

anyone on that computer typing in auto.search.msn.com, would go to whatever is living at the IP 69.11.11.111. It is commonly used by hijackers to make it so when you try to goto an AV site or something, you get somewhere else.

Hope that helps.

And DD, sry I dont have an answer to your question.

Matt
