irregularjoe
OK. Long story short. My S.O. has been home from the hospital for a week and is recovering nicely. Today is her birthday. And a big one. One of those decade ones. ( last one I had REALLY opened up my mid-life crisis....you wait you young people, you'll see...)Anyway, I just bought her an iPad wifi 32 gb. (she'd never use the 3G). I'm feeling guilty for some reason. Those of you that know me KNOW that I'm totally open source, hate DRM, love to get inside my PC's, etc. And yet I bought a $600 cute interface that ALLOWS you to buy things from Apple! And not much more. Am I missing something here?I bought it for her because I thought she could use it while recovering. Instead of sitting in front of the desktop. But she really doesn't like to pay for everything as she goes. (ie the Apple App store.) What do you think? I haven't given it to her yet. I REALLY have to update that avatar! JDoors
Wow, did you get caught up in the hype or something?(Procrastinate a little more and the avatar will be current again.)
irregularjoe
Wow, did you get caught up in the hype or something?(Procrastinate a little more and the avatar will be current again.)I guess so. It IS really beautiful, aside from the fact that it's basically a throwaway device and I could get a much more powerful laptop for less$$. But it's hers, not mine & she already likes it. Looks like it's official. I'll now be hanging out in the Mac forum.Re: avatar. Good idea. After all, there's only 133 shopping days 'til Christmas. http://eclecticesoterica.com/xmas_cnt.html
isteve
It all starts with I would never use a apple product they're evil and control everything. Then you use something made by apple and you think, this is too easy I don't trust anything this simple. Then it happens this ipad is kind of fun to use, "don't tell anyone I said that". Wow some of these free app are great maybe I'll spend a dollar or two on a app. Next thing you know you have 100 apps on the ipad and start thinking maybe I'll try a Mac. Hey OS X is't nearly as bad as I thought but again it is way to simple. If I use this to long I'll become one of them mac users who know nothing about tech... stupid simpletons. Thats when it happens you're posting on a forum and write something positive about Apple. And all of a sudden you are branded Mac Fanboy. Careful it's a slippery slope. Careful it's a slippery slope.I just bought an ipod touch yesterday and love the thing. I'm an open source idiot, but, there is something *very* appealing about apple products. I'm pretty sure my next lap top will be a macbook.Shhhhhh.......don't tell anyone:)
JDoors
Autocratic control over hardware and software has some appealing aspects, doesn't it?

Still, the iPad is the only tablet I've seen that I'd even consider paying for.
Pete_C
Well I doubt I would have gone for it. Probably a Netbook or even an ereader with some ebooks. I like the new Windows Tablets that are coming out with two touch screens which fold together to protect themselves. But they are still a bit pricey. http://mashable.com/2010/01/27/9-upcoming-tablet-alternatives-to-the-apple-ipad/Or the Compal which runs androidhttp://gizmodo.com/5443299/hands-on-with-compals-tegra-2-android-tablethttp://mashable.com/2009/12/24/notion-ink-tablet/

Pete_C
I hear that Google is releasing an Android based Tablet PC, probably just in time for black friday.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/12/google-tablet-pc-details_n_533860.htmlhttp://www.techsurf.com/2010/08/19/google-tablet-features-release-date-and-specs-rumored/Rumored to be an IPAD killer"The Google Tablet features a NVidia’s Tegra 2, a 1280×720 multitouch display, 2GB of RAM, minimum 32GB SSD, WiFi/Bluetooth/3G connectivity, GPS and webcam." isteve
Actually I believe the Google tablet will be running Chromium not Android. I read rumors that you will need to sign a two year contract with Verizon, at least for the first round. I don't think Google has any plans for a Android tablet yet. But other manufactures will have a choice of Android or Chromium. I know Google has a lot of momentum and wants to be the only name in mobil but I don't like the idea of a OS that only works when connected to Googles servers. I like the idea of cloud computing but would like other people to try it out first.
