I have a friend who's computer all of the sudden lost her ie link. It was missing out of the programs menu. When I tried to make a link to it, I got an error about the file not being there. When I navigate to program files\internet explorer, iexplore.exe is not there(visually). when we run iexplore from the run menu it works. I can use either "iexplore.exe" or "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe". Using that logic, the executable is there. I upgraded from version 7 to 8. everything works, but the executable is half missing. Any thoughts?

I have tried unhiding files, that does not help. Also when I do a windows search, it does not find it.

Sounds like an antivirus or registry lock interfered with the final stages.

Have you tried getting the IT expert download and reinstall in safe mode?

Have you looked in C:\Windows\IE8

(You should also find an IE8 uninstaller there)

I am guessing that when iexplore.exe is not found at the default location run looks in alternate paths and finds it.

according to hjt, it is running from C:\program files\internet explorer\

I was a little unclear in my post. this was originally happening with IE7. After installing IE8 it was acting the same way.

Ah, so you were hoping that the upgrade would fix the problem?

(has a reg file to download so you do not have to manually edit registry).

Also tweakui (the xp powertoy version) can fix this.

One other thing can cause this so if the above do not fix it consider it may be a corrupt profile issue.

Boot to safe mode and login with user name Administrator.

Go to control panel => users and under common tasks create a new user with full admin priveleges (new name and password) and then restart computer and login to new account.

See if things work there. If so then you know the old profile is damaged and you need to use this new one to repair it.
