Compaq 3200nx Os Reload Failure

Hi all.

A freind just called and has a garage sale PC of above make and model.

He said it booted fine and he was on the net on dail up but it was running very slow.

So he decided a destructive recovery from the partition,

Says it ran then gave him choices and he choose boot from partition.

Now he gets a black screen that says B /$ and nothing else happens.

Oh well, I found his OEM discs online.

Hopefully that will get him going.

The exact wording of the B / $ it says on the black screen would help.

It almost sounds like some hardware was replaced and this computer is no longer in original configuration so that it cannot be restored using the recovery partition.

I also would consider checking the hard drive for defects. I usually run spinrite, but that is a paid program. The manufacture of the drive should make a free utility to check it.

It is worth running memtest86 also. I doubt it is memory problem, but it is easy to check.
