masatoshi
My PC is running reasonably well, but I'm getting a lot of rogue messages popping up about spyware and Trojan infections. (For example: "Your system is probably infected with latest version of Spyware.CyberLog-X".) Any such message tries to redirect me to download some (presumably spurious) anti-spyware software I've never heard of. I'm running BitDefender and it has detected (and presumably quarantined) several instances of Trojan infections, but there's evidently more going on than just that. The origin of the problem must be an instance when I came across a website with an embedded video and got a message that it couldn't play on my system without an add-on. Like an idiot, I clicked OK. I now have a folder added to my C:\Program Files called Video Add-on which BitDefender identifies as being infected but cannot be deleted manually. I also have a couple of programmes which have added themselves to my Add or Remove Programs list: IE Custom Tools and IE Safety Features. I'm assuming these are not supposed to be there, but they are not easily uninstallable - they don't give me the option to uninstall, asking me instead to reboot the machine before uninstalling (which achieves nothing). I've run Spybot to fix as many problems as it can. Have also tried running Ad Aware SE but it cannot get to the end of a scan without stalling.Hjt report looks like this:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 22:28:13, on 02/01/2008Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16574)SBoot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Video Add-on\icthis.exeC:\Program Files\Video Add-on\isfmntr.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exeC:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exeC:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPLpr.exeC:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exeC:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\hphmon05.exeC:\Program Files\HPQ\Quick Launch Buttons\EabServr.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exeC:\Program Files\DVD Region Killer\RegKillTray.exeC:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Distillr\Acrotray.exeC:\Program Files\Video Add-on\icmntr.exeC:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exeC:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender10\bdmcon.exeC:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender10\bdagent.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.ExeC:\Program Files\Video Add-on\isfmm.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Allume\StuffIt\MXTask.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Softwin\BitDefender Communicator\xcommsvr.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Softwin\BitDefender Update Service\livesrv.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Allume\StuffIt\mxtask.exeC:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exeC:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Softwin\BitDefender Scan Server\bdss.exeC:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender10\vsserv.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Lavasoft\AD-AWA~1\Ad-Aware.exeC:\WINDOWS\hh.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeR0 - sarahw
Hi,Welcome to the siteI will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. Please give me some time to look it over and I will get back to you as soon as possible.I want you to show hidden files. There are instructions HERE to help you do this. You should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Some of the instructions I give may need to be printed or saved for reference during the fix. Some of the fix will be done in Safe Mode so you will be unable to access this thread at that time. Please dont use any of the tools without specific instructions. Some of them are dangerous (and could leave your computer in worse condition that it is when infected) if used incorrectly. These instuctions should be read first, then followed. If you do not understand something, don't be afraid to ask, or see if I'm on chat.

masatoshi
So I'm guessing I'm about the millionth person who's come to you with this exact problem. I've followed your instructions. It looks as if HijackThis has only managed to shift about half of the items you listed. Things do seem to be better, though. I ran the AVG scan in safe mode and it detected and deleted about 100 cookies. However, for some reason, when I went into reports it said "No reports available". 11663 bytes-----One other thing perhaps worth mentioning is that I had previously sent some of the files from the C:\Program Files\Video Add-on folder to the recycle bin. They are still there as they refuse to be deleted. BitDefender has identified them as being infected but can't do anything to delete them. I probably shouldn't have removed them from the folder in the first place. Anything I need to do about this? Should I try to restore them and then do another OTMoveIt operation? Thanks for yr help so far.
sarahw
So I'm guessing I'm about the millionth person who's come to you with this exact problem. It's a common problem. You should never get codec's to your programs unless it comes from the person who made it. Ie: Windows Media player extensions, codecs and other packs should only come from Microsoft, the creator of the program. If you can't veiw the program with out third party add-ons, its not worth watching anyways. "No reports available". Not sure what I did wrong there ... It's a problem with the program.1.First, empty your Recycle Bin. Whatever can't be deleted, restore to you computer. If you can't restore it, leave it where it is.2.Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next replyNote: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
