  1.  I have a question on the Microsoft starter free  edition of word and Excel that came on my Dell computer.  The computer is over 3 years old but this just started about a week ago.  Every time I turn of the computer, I get a message  which flashed up saying there is an update on this program and just click Yes to download.   I  Feel this is an virus and have not clicked on it.  I've had several like this in the last month or so. Last one was from the post office asking me to click on the delivery label to print it.  this was a virus.   do you know if there  Is there a pending update on the free version from Microsoft.  Nothing shows up on Windows update.  Thank you for any help.

  2. OK, that was easy.  Should I run this program occasionally just to check the computer. if so, how do I get the address ?  I run Malware and the Norton a couple times a week.  Usually get tracking cookies .

  3. howard, sometimes we get lucky with the knowledge we pick up & stick away in notes !

    So glad it worked !

    Happy Surfing !!

    Chuck

Oh I'm right behind you at 67 !!

Chuck,  since I'm on  a streak, when I run Malware every once in a while, I get this in the results.  Do you know what it is ?

    Registry Keys Detected: 1

    HKCR\AppID\{D616A4A2-7B38-4DBC-9093-6FE7A4A21B17} (PUP.Optional.Wajam.A) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

  4. Hey, gonna give you what i know on this subject !

These .xlsm files i.e. files that can contain macros !!

Word and Excel before 2010 you wont get the exclamation mark in the icon if you save as a .xlsx

If your previous version was E2003 or earlier then it never had this feature which first emerged in E2007. Don't be concerned, it's not indicative of an error despite looking like one.

I had a note in my files that some have tried a "repair": Windows Start button > Control Panel > Add/remove Programs: locate Office 2010 and right click, select Change > select Repair !!

Now i do not know if that will work or not so i am just posting that info for you !!

    Hope this helps some !

    Chuck

Maybe more will weight in on this subject !!!

Chuck, thanks for the help, I'll try that.   I'm 70 and not very good with this stuff.   This problem just started, I've been using them for some time.  If I hit  Documents, all of the Excel and Word  folders are orange.  If I click on one of them, a screen opens and shows how to purchase the program.  It also says, that the program to open these files is not on your computer.  It's been on there for a few years.   I don't have the disks to reinstall the program.  The strange thing is that if I hit start, all programs, Microsoft  Office Starter, and click on Word OR Excel, they open all the files with no problem.  With this problem, I can't back up a file to a thumb drive.

  5. I'm not sure if this could have caused this, but I just had Microsoft/Windows update a few days ago.  I'm using the starter edition of Microsoft office which came with my Dell computer.  Desktop running Windows 7 Home.   If I click on  Documents, all of the Word and Excel files have a orange folder icon and won't open.   If I open the program, they will open.  I put in the thumb drive in the USB slot that has all of my backup files,  and they also are orange.  Since I don't know much about computers. I don't know what to do.  Any Ideas ??

  6. Chuck, again when I clicked and opened the link to adwcleaner, a big warning opened up from McAfee about this site contains several virus.   I just don't wish to take a chance and get wiped out again.   I'm going to remove McAfee and install Norton and try it again.  This may not be for a week or so.  I'll open a post or continue with this one at that time.  I do appreciate your help, I'm just gun shy to hit the download key since coming off the last problem.    I did reinstall Malware before I started this and the first time I used it, it did remove four entries.  Sorry, at that time I just had them removed.

  7. Howard, that's very strange ! I downloaded every link leading to the files & no virus !!

So here is a direct link to the program  >>> http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

I would like to do some scans if you want to start a thread in the Malware Removal section ! I don't think they got all of the virus !!

I'm 67 & think they are the most facinating things since the jungles of Viet Nam !! ........ LMAO

Oh & McAfee & Norton i have tried both & i am more satisfied with the free edition of Avast than any.

So start me a post in the Malware Removal section & we can see if you are infected if you want ???

    Thanks

    Chuck

OK, I'll try it, and , like I said, I'll not very good with this stuff.

  8. No virus on any of those sites i went there my self. You should of came here for the virus removal, i have been doing that for 11 yrs.

You may still be infected, if you want we can run some scans to find out ! You will need to post in the Malware Removal section for me !!

    Thanks

    Chuck

Thanks, but whatever it was, it wiped out the OS.  I could not even get it to boot to the CD.  The shop did a clean sweep of the hard drive so I hope they removed it.  It was like new out out the box again. Thanks for the help.  I'm 70 and not very good with computers.   I'll try the site again and see what happens.  I can't understand why all of the warning were on the site.   I'm having an issue with McAfee and will probably dump them for Norton.

  9. Ok found it ! Here is why one should not use MSConfig >>> If you have been using MSConfig as a startup manager please read this. >>> http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=149804

Here they are, you can pick the one you want ! I don't use any but it depends on the users computer, how fast it loads !!

    A1...Codestuff Starter http://www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html

Starter is a startup manager, that allows you to view and manage allthe programs that are starting

automatically whenever Windows boots. It lists all the hidden registry entries, as well as the common Startup Folder items as well. You can choose to safely disable selected entries, edit them or delete them altogether (if you know what you are doing). Expert users can even add their own entries.

    A2...Startup Delayer http://www.snapfiles.com/get/startdelay.html

Startup Delayer allows you to specify which programs to start first and which ones to delay. You can set a custom delay for each one, even drag the visual display graph which shows you exactly how your programs are starting and allows you to easily modify the order or adjust delay times.

A3...Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel Startup Control Panel is a nifty control panel applet that allows you to easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. It is simple to use , very small and won't burden your system. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/startupcpl.html

These are all safe to use !! Hope this helps !

    Chuck

I found the cool stuff on this site.  I went to download and my McAfee popped up and said a virus was attached.  I just went through a Trojan that wiped out the OS and it cost me $140 to get it working again..  so you think this is a virus on the download.
