  1. Hello,

Didn't think my first post here would be for help. I was attempting to ghost 2 drives and when I saw that it hadn't worked the way I thought, I shutdown and put the original drives back into the pc. The problem is that the storage drive used to be G: and it was changed to D: So my C: drive shortcuts are not directed toward the right drive. The G: drive is now my CD-ROM. I havn't had any luck trying to rename the drive. Windows now can't find anything on the drive because it is looking at the wrong location. I tried fixing the shortcut but that didn't work. I've never run into this before, any suggestions will be appreciated. Iam hoping not to have to reload all the programs. Plus there was a lot of music on there. Thanks in advance from a former TTV fan. I am also running XP PRO SP2.

rclick mycomp/manage - then see the logical disk manager tool.

rclik all u'r drives and reset them to UNUSED letters - temporary if u've got some letter conflict - then order them as u wish.

    should have added for clarity:

in the diskmanger tool, u'll see the partitions in color coded sequence. u can rclik over each and choose 'change drive letter'. u can change anything cept for the system drive.

  2. Sorry about that.  I have Windows XP.  Well I have my own website and it has alot of info and stuff in it and I don't want it to get deleted.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

xp pro = from explorer, do tools/folderoptions and then see the view tab. once there, uncheck 'simple file sharing' and hit OK.

then go to u'r web folder and rclik it and choose 'sharing & security'. then see the security tab.

u should see a listing of the 'default' security users/groups. u can hit 'advanced' and then uncheck 'inherit permissions ...' checkbox. this will bring up a dialog where u shoulcd choose 'copy' option. once u do that, u can add/remove permissions as u see fit. eg - only leave administrators and u'r personal account.

for this to be effective, u must remove all users cept those u DO want to be able to manipulate the permissions from admin group. eg - admin group has keys to the kingdom so they can reverse anything u do above.

if u'r xp home, forget all the above as i don't know if it supports ntfs folder/file level permissions. read it's docs.

u COULD just copy the source folder and put it in u'r home folder if it's 'private' or use some .zip util and assign a password to the .zipped copy etc. eg - there ARE many other options. folderwatch, for instance, will keep 'on the fly' copies to any location(s) u choose ;)

  3. She kept signing in on Web Messenger, so that ment to me she didnt have MSN installed, I asked her why she always uses Web Messenger, she said her PC wont let her install 7.0 or anything, she either has to use Web Messenger or Windows Messenger. She said she had a Dell, that is fairly new too. When she goes to install it she get an Error Code of '1601'

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    ??

what has she got? and what specifically does she wish to install?

iow - what OS? what messenger is installed? and what is the intention here?

eg - she's got win xp pro, msn messenger version x, wants msn messenger version y.

since there are varying versions of 'messenger' ... name them all exactly so that it's clear what she's got and what she wants. more or less ;)

  4. Hello all.  Been lurking round here for a whle now, and it is sad that this is what it took to finally get me to post.

Anyhoo I've got a Dell Dimension 2300 (I think) running XP that's about 3-4 years old that has now decided to throw up the blue screen of death on occasion.    The important points of the screen are as follows:

    kernel_data_inpage_error

    Technical information:

    STOP:  0x0000007a (0xc03e475c, 0x000000e, 0xf91d7384, 0x0adcf860)

    atapi.sys- Address 91D7384 base at F91CA000, DateStamp 41107b4d

Upon logging in after restarting from said screen, I get a message saying that Windows has encountered a serious error and to tell Microsoft about the problem.  Based on what Microsoft says it could very well be a hardware problem, but nothing new has been installed (unless you count the time I tried to swap out the hard drive for a hamster's brain- never could get the smell out  )  And my research on that specific code didn't turn up anything useful.

Ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Avast (all up to date) in Safe Mode and nothing came up.

So... anyone have any ideas on what the problem is and potential solutions?  For obvious reasons I'd rather use Dell Tech Support as a last resort.

As you can see I'm having a lovely day -_- - how is everyone else's day going?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

atapi.sys is IDE related. perhaps u'r HD --> hampster swap did do something ;)

can u start in safe mode? if so, check u'r devicemanager for errors.

  5. I found that a minimum of 15G should be used for XP, once you get a years worth of programs and things installed on it, the space gets used up fast.

I keep everything outside of the OS that I can, in different partitions, and with this last install I resized my XP partition to 20G.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I agree, I used to say a minimum of 10GB for the XP OS partition, but now say 15-20 is optimal. Gives you room for the things which need to be on the OS partition to install there and plenty of spare room for swap file etc.

Then keep anything which can go outside the OS partition on other partitions so that they do not bog it down.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

i'd also add that a non-destructive partitioner like partition magic would be a solid idea. saves aspirin down the road ;)

  6. you don't need to use a separate program to wipe the drive.

when you delete the existing partition(s), make new one's and then format the partitions, you'll have effectively wiped out the previously stored files.

the only proper thing to do with an infected cd is to physically break it, then throw it away. this avoids the possiblity of forgetting weeks or months later that it is infected and then putting it in the system. if there are files on it that are clean, you can first copy those to the hard drive and make a new cd.

hi how do i delete the nfts partition to put a fts which is on win98se.

im tried it before and when i got to the bit that says setup

a notice came up saying this cant be setup in dos.and i was told that is because im changing

    back from nfts to fts.

and that the drive needs to be wiped to clear it from nfts.

    and reset it to fts.

im new at this if it was from 98se to xp i can handle that but from xp to 98se is another ball game

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

boot u'r xp install cd and, after the f8 agreement, u can just delete partitions. then f3 exit. put in u'r 9x installer and install. might wanna throw an fdisk /mbr at it first to re-write the bootsec

  7. thanks mikex

  8. Hello all,

My oldest brother recently password protected his admin account so of cousre when windows starts it asks for the password. I told him there was a way around it of course by going into safe mode. lol he somehow was able to password protect his safe mode account? so now when you want to get into safe mode it asks for a password! ok im dead set that theres still a way around this? hahhaha is there?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

ummm ... why not just type the password? ;) or is the memory that bad?? hahahaha

  9. I do have a Admin account and what do you mean Guru?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

if u'r xp and u wanna make the username = the folder name, just use the file & settings xfer wizard in the system tools area. then create a new account as u see fit and reverse the process so that u'r files & settings move to the new account.

once u'r happy/tested out ok, u can purge the old account.

as to not seeing 'folder options' ... odd ... could be a group policy put in effect by admin. ask them ;)
