  1. Just wondering about this but wich would be better. Software acceleration or hardware acceleration for sound? There is an option in battlefield 2 wich allows for hardware acceleration. Would this be good for better game performance?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

hardware is better given u've got support for it - meaning u'r sound card must be supported to use it in the game

  2. I don't know about system restore, but safe mode does the same thing but the background is black with the "safe mode" in the corners, can't right click background, no taskbar. I've tried ending explorer.exe and running it again but that didn't work. By the way My Documents pops up everytime we reload explorer.exe.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

repair install by booting xp cd ... choose repair when u see it.

and a longshot ... pull all peripherals and boot.

  3. we all have the same user ID username is:lit1 password:student... i plan to ask them now, but before i wasnt sure if this was possible to do.. thank you for your response ohh and the IP thing, i could tel which computer it was on that way whoever sits at that workstation is screwed.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

sounds good. i'd tell the admin that if they add userID for each, they'd save lots of $ on cams/tapes ;) hehe ... but i hear ya on the ip vs locaiton point.

  4. Im using XP home edition.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

maybe try to train them to NOT hit DEL? ;)

xp home does not support full file level permissions for what i'd do w/ xp pro but ... u MAY be able to use the 'windows shared computer toolkit' which offers some nifty preventative measures. it's avail from MS and u should read the docs before u attempt to do such as some prep work in terms of having to repartion might be necessary.

even if u kill off the DEL key on the keyboard, they can still purge files. i think the best method here is 'if u DEL it, u don't get it back' ... that SHOULD be enuff to teach them. no offense intended but ... if they can't figure this DEL key thing out then ... maybe they shouldn't use a pc ;)

and i'd get a good backup routine or something like the xp sync powertoy or folderwatch which can make copies on the fly.

  5. yes very true, but first ill need to talk to the principal about it first to find out when i can setup an appointment to talk to him. I just wanted to know if there was a way or should i just forget about it

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

u lost me ... but i don't really need to know.

in any event, the admin would be able to help u. why u'r hooked on the IP is puzzling ... all u'r gonna get is a location. u want the userID

i'd add that this is a direct responsiblity for the admin. that's my point here. u should direct this to them and ... i can't seem to get the idea of why u can't just ask them ;)

  6. Hey all,

I was wondering if there is such a program that would prevent someone from deleting any file on a computer. or maybe there is a windows setting to do this? the problem i have is that some of the people in my house have tendencies to press the delete key randomly so its just a matter of time when an important file is deleted.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    what os?

check u'r file permisions and/or group memberships. u can't, in all practicality, prevent users from deleting their own stuff.

  7. Hey guys, i am a highschool student in a computer class and today my documents got deleted off the server that the whole class saves stuff to. Im pretty sure an individual did it in that class, however have no way to prove it. i was wondering if the computer administrators at my school could trace who has edited/changed/deleted my folder... we are a novell networked network... i need to prove that it was that person or else i have to bite the bullet. anything at all would be appriciated. thanks.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

shouldn't u ask the netadmin at u'r school? u'd need them for this anyway.

  8. A friend of mine has tried to access Google Maps and he gets an error report that he does not have Acrive X enabled  - here is his email message

When I tried to open Maps on Google, I got the message that it could not happen because I did not have active x on my browser.

What happened to it and how can i get it back or re install it or download it.

    Harold

I have had him check the settings in Security and he tells me all of his Active x are checked the same as mine.  (I can get the maps)

He is running windows 98 and I believe he is running explorer 6.

any ideas would be most welcome

    thanks

it only appear to use Javascript. u should be able to add to u'r trusted zone and go. and the blockers should, of course, allow google.com as well.

  9. Sitting right beside the thing I get full speed but at a week ago from anywhere I was getting full speed does the signal get worst as time goes on or something?

When right beside I get 54mbps (Routers max) then when I go to where I use to get 54mbps I get 2 - 18 and it sometime has a hadr time connecting and drops  sometimes.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

change channels, repostion antennae, etc. wireless is wireless and it's going to vary on conditions.

  10. It does that in the player itself too. I reinstalled twice and didnt fix it.

I have the most up to date drivers.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Whoa. It's probably an incompatibility between the player/ the video card/ the video drivers. Not much you can do if those three things can't play nice together except change one or more of those items. For example, use a previous version, or a newer one if available.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Ok, is there anyway i can use the VLC Media Player to play the WMP videos online?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

turn off video excelleration in u'r vid control panel and test.

  11. Well last few days all of the sudden I been getting really weak conntion signal and it drops alot and sometimes my laptop doesn't decect the wireless siganl for 5 mintues.

I got an Acer Aspire 1522LMI

The wireless card is:INPROCOMM IPN2220 Wireless LAN Card

My wireless router is the d-link di-524

Just this started all of the sudden and I think it's a driver problem...But any suggestions will be helpful.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

what is the physical position of router vs lappie? move it close. real close. then do u still have issues?

  12. What I did was enter my router's settings and typed inthe following under applicatins gaming (linksys)

    Application - i put realvnc

    start - 5800

    end - 5900

    TCp and UDP Protocol

    ip address: 192.168.2.1

and I checked the enable box.

    Did I do something wrong?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

yes. .1 is the router. it's not the IP of the machine that u wanna handle vnc thru.

u can't really setup to 'get to any machine' using this method. u CAN setup to get to ONE machine. and that machine's IP is the one should enter here and check.

eg - u wanna reach PC1 at 192.168.1.10, u setup PC1 at static .10 and then setup the checkbox in port forwarding as such.

u SHOULD setup all such machines as 'static' to do this.

and i should add that the only protection u have here is the VNC password. make it a GOOD one since anyone can 'see' the service and they'll know what it is ;)

  13. 1. From what I've read, installations should be done from the admin. account. Yes??

    2. If done from the admin account, are programs automatically active for all profiles?

Thanks in advance for your advice and it's good to see you great helpers settling in after the recent upheavals.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

as to #2 - they may be available but they may not run IF the prog requires admin to RUN it ;) ... some progs do not consider privs at all. u'll need to deal w/these on a 1 x 1 basis really

  14. I got a job fixing a computer for the beauty salon my wife works at. As a precaution to not losing any data, I would like to make a perfect bootable copy of the harddrive on a spare I have. What would a reliable, possibly free(or inexpensoive) utility be to do this.

If I made a mistake on the original harddrive, i would like to be able to just put my copy of the harddrive in and boot it.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

symantec also has drive image thru their powerquest aquistion. not sure they sitll produce or support it but i've always preferred it to ghost.

  15. Recently, starting about 8 days ago, we started seeing quite a few (11 so far) Maxtor external hdd's all with the same problem.

For one reason or another, they all seem to have lost their file allocation tables and partition information. They all show up in the bios and even on Windows disk management on the server platforms, but they can not be mounted or assigned a drive letter.

So far 8 of them have been accessable thru DOS and the contents retrieved, but the other 3 are DOA.

We have tried DOS, 95,98,XP, W2K3 server and Linux and none of the systems can access the drives, partition the drive or even format them.

I wonder if these are suddenly going to become a problem item or is it just gremlins?

Anyone else have any issues with these drives? (they range in size from 40 to 200 Gb's and are all between 1 and 3 years old)

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

i've had a few 200 gigs just plain croak. i stopped using maxtors since.

  16. the only reason i responded above is that u quoted me only on the ssid part of my post. i said the encryption part in that same post. if that was quoted, i'da just kept reading on

I didn't disagree with that part, thats why i didn't quote it. Oh well, seems like we all agree on one thing..Brooke Shield needs to shave more often...no, thats not it...encrypt it and forget about it...yeah, thats it. :P

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

now THAT was funny ... re: the quote stuff ... i read it wrong then. mea culpa. i'm used to full quotes cuz it's all i know. i'm old. heck ... i don't even like edits where u can remove orig material. i've read so many threads that just fall apart until i realize that the edit button took out most of the gist ;)

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

But you agree about Brooke and her monobrow right? :(-_-:P:D:):angry2::lol:

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

posolutely ... seems tom cruise has bashed her enuff tho ... l ron knows what to do

  18. w/ encryption on, all this is moot for the most part.

    I'd agree with that.

That aside, I have seen a dramatic upswing lately in secured vs unsecurednetworks (now that its become easy to do and fairly reliable)

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

i haven't ... that could change w/ some of the newer products and the 'auto config' stuff they've got but ... i still see a huge number of wide open wlans. maybe they want em that way.

  19. spoofing is beyond 'anyone's capability generally. u'd have to really have someone targeting u to do this.

and i've yet to see a crippled wlan from disabling ssid. it will stop those who don't know

in RE to statement #1. Heres a link to a google search with tons of ways to spoof a mac address and how to's, so its really not hard and just about anybody can do it. Targeting someone has nothing to do with it. Most people who squat on wifi don't care about your email etc, they want your bandwidth to do something that is not traceable to them. B)

    and in RE to #2

I've never seen a Great white shark eat a person but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Read the specs on 802.1, the ssid is contained in just about every packet anyway. It was never designed as any type of securoty measure. <_<

If saftey thru obscurity is your idea of being safe then, maybe it will make you feel better, but it certainly won't stop anyone with a modicum of intelligence from knowing that your network is there. :matrix:

If you want more details on the +/- of disabling SSID, PM CatCow over at tthe G4 boards or here. he'll be glad to explain it to you in great detail.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

ssid off will keep those who don't know off. i'm basing on my experience - not catcows. i do read his stuff. i do agree that it's off spec. i don't see any reason that this affects anything tho. so ... being 'off spec' doesn't bother me at all ;) i've had SSID off for years w/ no problems. and since learning that it IS off spec, i've yet to recommend to anyone here or g4. i still DO setup w/ ssid off for my clients tho. u can point to all th white paperes u want, i'll stick w/ what i've experienced. it is the best teacher.

the vast majority of wlans i've seen are not protected at all. i'd assume it's cuz these people buy em, plug em in and leave em at defaults. in this case, SSID off will do u a world of good by not annoucing the wlan's presence to those who are not 'in the know' - google or not. i contend that this is the bigger audience.

w/ encryption on, all this is moot for the most part.

  20. I just got broadband at home and now suddenly, everytime I open and surf on the internet, my computer chimes at various intervals.  It seems like everytime I go to a different page or if it opens a window, it chimes....it's quite annoying.

It only happens on my login, not my husbands.  I had also installed McAfee Privacy service but I've uninstalled it now.

Can you help me and tell me where to turn this chime off?  Someone said it could be spyware but I just used a program  I downloaded after the chiming started and it didn't find anything.

By the way, I have an Inspiron 600m and it's running Windows XP.

    Thanks...

    ~May

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

what's in startup? and is u'r sound scheme a default one?

i'd check all programs that start automatically for the chimer. mike lin's startup control panel should help here. google on 'mike lin' and u'll find it.

u can open u'r sound control panel and test each sound item to match u'r chime. that should give u some headway in determining what is causing it.

  21. the MAC filter allows u to tell the router to only allow specific MACs to connect to it.

And anyone can easily grab your mac address and spoof it just like you are doing, MAC filtering is also NOT a security measure.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

spoofing is beyond 'anyone's capability generally. u'd have to really have someone targeting u to do this.

  22. Hello,

Didn't think my first post here would be for help. I was attempting to ghost 2 drives and when I saw that it hadn't worked the way I thought, I shutdown and put the original drives back into the pc. The problem is that the storage drive used to be G: and it was changed to D: So my C: drive shortcuts are not directed toward the right drive. The G: drive is now my CD-ROM. I havn't had any luck trying to rename the drive. Windows now can't find anything on the drive because it is looking at the wrong location. I tried fixing the shortcut but that didn't work. I've never run into this before, any suggestions will be appreciated. Iam hoping not to have to reload all the programs. Plus there was a lot of music on there. Thanks in advance from a former TTV fan. I am also running XP PRO SP2.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

rclick mycomp/manage - then see the logical disk manager tool.

rclik all u'r drives and reset them to UNUSED letters - temporary if u've got some letter conflict - then order them as u wish.

    should have added for clarity:

in the diskmanger tool, u'll see the partitions in color coded sequence. u can rclik over each and choose 'change drive letter'. u can change anything cept for the system drive.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    hey skeet6961

    good to see you here

    you will be an asset

    for ever helping people

even at g4 with all that confusion

your info was spot on good one

    glad your here .

    marty

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

thanx marty. glad to see u 2. i saw pete headed here along w/ many others so i follow along. have to be able to read ill_wiccan's posts to keep the smile in order ;)

  23. I have a few wireless netwrok questions.  I have xp Home with all updates.  My router is a links model wrt54gs.

First I dont understand how to use the SSID at all.  I know that this deals with my network name and its purpose is to hide the name but for the life of me I cant figure this out.

Mac Address, what is this and how do I know what to set up to make my network more secure.  Thanks for helping me out

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

SSID is merely what u name the network. call it something and then make sure u'r clients agree to the name. particularly if u disable the SSID broadcast. if broadcast is on, then anyone in 'range' will 'see' the SSID. u should use some form of encryption here regardless. wpa is solid.

MAC = the hardware 'code' that each network device has. it's a number stamped at factory so that the device is uniquely identifiable on any network. no two are the same. u do nothing w/ this mostly but i think u'r refering to the linksys MAC cloning or filter ability.

the cloning allows u to 'fake' the MAC address of the router by substituting the one on the NIC in u'r pc. mostly for odd ISP setups where they only allow a specific MAC addy - normally the one that u had when the ISP first was setup.

the MAC filter allows u to tell the router to only allow specific MACs to connect to it.

just setup encryption to the highest level u'r client accomodate and u need do nothing else mostly. and the linksys router setup pages have the 'more info' link if what u see at the right of the screen is not sufficient.
