Freidog,Aug 20 2005
Don't rely on those ratings to tell you anything of value.
Look at benchmarks, specifically those dealing with applications you'd like to use.
Oh so very true, don't play the number game on the CPU, Always do as Freidog has suggested when deciding what would work for your needs
-
64's are better than XPs not because of the 64-bit capable architecture but the superior engineering. It's just a faster chip.. there's really no need for 64 bit processors right now but in a few years when the 64bit market is up you'll see a noticable climb.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
As explained somewhat in this post

Antec PS's are very good but if you ever have a problem they do make you jump through a lot of hoops to get an RMA. They were polite and all but the process was rather tedious for sure.....
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Wow you had to return one? Been buying them for years and years well them and Thermaltake and never had a power supply go bad or come bad from the manufacture..
LOL they are probably slow due to the fact they hardly ever have it happen..
Good information to know that it may take awhile for a RMA.
-
Well Not sure if it would work or not the information i gathered said it took a special chip set and not all ram would work. first thing i would do is call that number on the page you listed and ask them what the deal was.. if they cant help you then perhaps ask them about a return and go ahead and purchase 1 of the 2 i listed that guarantee to work
-
yup it will and would and can Antec's are solid
-
Its a 450W PSU.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Antec is one of the best you should have no troubles..
And by the way its not always the size a many may think its the quality of the power supply. such the performance of the rails and i assure you with what you listed a 450W from antec would power it with no trouble and have plenty of room for future upgrades
-
Update im getting the AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 1GHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor will a 450W PSU be enough power for my system?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yes it would, keep in mind if possible try to get a name brand PS it may save you from headaches in the future

3 beeps Base 64K RAM failure
Maximum Memory 512MB
Memory Slots 2 (2 banks of 1)
Base Memory 64MB removable
Your Hewlett-Packard Pavilion XE743 only supports modules made with a specific type of chip. Should you find what seems to be the exact same memory elsewhere for a lower price, it is very possible that the cheaper memory will not work in your computer.

Looks good, would be a nice computer..
Should you get a CPU with 1MB l2 cache? If it was me and you could find one that was not that more expensive then you bet. the more on the chip itself the faster it will be.
-
This will help you understand a little about 64 bit.. Great article that i found a long time ago.
When is it faster to have 64 bits?
A comprehensive look at the term "64-bit operations"
reveals its chameleon-like meaning and qualifies
its benefits -- and drawbacks.

Okay i suggest for a cheap but a great performing laptop Averatec Fast, reliable and affordable. This laptop would work great for what you are asking but for gaming you would need to look into something else probably. You can find them at your walmart store LOL yup Walmart but don't think because they are sold at Walmart they are cheaply made. they are great little laptops. i never had to use them but i have herd the customer support is pretty good as well. I have suggested them to several people and they have not complained to me once.

i know how you feel, i got this computer befor i really knew anything about computers and i got stuck with a PCI slot ........sucks but ill deal, video cards for PCI do well enough for me ^^;
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
As lefty said PCI is not something you have to be ashamed of. PCI is still a great option if you are unable to afford the top models .things. What i would do is look into upgrading in the future so i would look for a 64bit CPU that would work with my PCI slot brd and A PCI-E so latter when i get my bucks together all i would have to do is get a new mobo and well if you have a AGP you may have to get a new card but there are mobo's that have both AGP and PCI ob them.
As far as the posters ? the guys or girls LOL are correct nope you can not do so. perhaps send It back and get a mobo that will work for you

Sempron is a slower Athlon XP (the exception goes to the Sempron socket 754 versions, which are an Athlon 64 with less L2 memory cache; these models use socket 754 pinout, thus requiring motherboards originally developed to Athlon 64, having a greater performance then socket 462 models). Originally Sempron socket 754 didn't have the 64-bit extensions available on Athlon 64, but since July, 2005, AMD introduced the 64-bit instructions on these processors. So, the socket 754 Semprons listed below can be found with or without the 64-bit extensions.
The difference in performance between Sempron and Athlon XP occurs due to the numbering system used to designate the processor's speed, which is differente for each processor. A Sempron 3000+ isn't faster than an Athlon XP 2800+, even though it has a greater number. The processor numbers can only be used to compare CPUs in the same product line, i.e. you can only compare Sempron to Sempron and Athlon XP to Athlon XP.
To fully understand this issue, take a look on the tables below. As you can see, a Sempron 2800+ is slower than an Athlon XP 2600+ 333 and a Sempron 2600+ is slower than an Athlon XP 2500+. To make the comparison, you have to watch the internal clock, the external clock and the L2 memory cache size.
This naming scheme used by AMD is really confusing. As you can see there are three Athlon XP 2600+ models with completely different technical specs, even though they use the same name.
Processor Internal Clock /External Clock / L2 Memory Cache Socket
Sempron 2200+ 1.50 GHz 333 MHz 256 KB 462

Really don't think this may help your issue but when installing and installing files especially large file makes the drive really fragmented. First thing i would do is defrag the drive.

Water-cooling is the best way to cool. but it does have its disadvantages
1.Price
2.possible leaks
This is very important
always Pre assemble an test for leaks before you actually run it threw big dollar equipment
The trick here is to know what water cooling system is the best performers for the lowest bucks.
First let me list a store that you will find Mostcooling hardware out on the market
Next with stick with the title HARD
and take you to a site that knows all about cooling and overclocking.
Now you will find many article on water cooling systems and air cooled options at that site and as well the site i list under.
But some of my favorite cooling options usually come from
They have great choices water and air options. and heck some of them even make your system look great.
Been using their products for several years and never had a complaint..
(one of the manufactures i use i should say)
-
For my new system im getting a AMD Althon 64 3500+ is the stock heatsink and fan good if I dont plan on overclocking?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yes it will work just fine. in all actuality if you use anything other then OEM heatsick you void the warranty on the CPU

i was onceĀ a "dedicated" western-digital user. but when my W-D died, i thought i'd try a different maker, so i went with Seagate. i'd recommend Seagate first, then W-D second.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
LOl so do i thats why it was the first thing i listed. I pretty much only use Seagate as of now

Okay, first of a Logitech does not suck! they are very nice keyboards as long as you get a decent model. most of the time in electronics your going to get what you pay for. buy cheap and thats what your going to get.
unfortunately i am going to tell you that $50 is not going to be enough to get a wireless keyboard/mouse worth playing games with.
look at these for choices
Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 3100 Retail ***Free 2nd Day*** $79.99 After Rebate:
Thermaltake A2210 Xaser RF Wireless Keyboard & Mouse (Silver) Retail ***Free 2nd Day*** $55.99
Logitech Cordless Rechargeable Desktop Keyboard & Mouse Combo (Midnight Black/Silver) ***Free 2nd Day***$53.99Logitech Cordless Desktop LX 700 Retail ***Free 2nd Day*** $44.99
Any of those would work for gaming purposes

My 2cents heck i say up to a nickels worth
I live in the country in the middle of a field pretty much, only house on this road and no others for about 3/4 miles away. the only trees around are at my house and the house that is 3/4 miles away. my point is when a storm passes buy it is pretty much a sure thing that lightning is going to strike my property somewhere. close to my house if not my house itself.. lived in this house for over 25 years and only once has any of my computers been affected. the damage? lost a few dial up modems..
I buy the surge protectors from Radio Shack that guarantee replacement of electronics up to $50,000.. the cost of one is around $45 i think..
As far as unplugging everything ext..? nope no need if you ask me as long as you have your house set up for such an occurrence.
Back to Chappy comment "mythbusters" yup i know the show luv it. great show
I have a degree in Electronic Engineering and i can tell you electricity is a strange thing. noway to really predict what it is going to do. during school we spoke about lightning several times. electronic hardware can be harmed even if it is not plugged in. sounds funny but it is true.
So, should you go as far as unplugging it? i say turning it off is sufficient as long as you have a good surge protector

You need to reset the bios and reset it to default settings. you probably still have the setting that made you computer crash and need to change them back to the way they was before. then follow what prodrive suggested
usually you can reset the bios back to default 2 ways
1. enter the bios and find the selection that says set to default.
2. unplug the computer, find the jumper on the motherboard (usually really close to the bios battery) set the jumper tho reset, remove the Boise battery , wait a few minutes. put the jumper back, put the bios battery back in and reboot
get back to us and let us know

Just to give you an ideal damage can occur to a hard drive it is dropped from 1/2 inch. Parts are aligned just right to turn that fast and it only takes a bump to ruin things.
