  1. My new HTPC desktop.

XP Pro - Razor 1.2 Theme

    Wallpaper from DeviantArt

    Rainmeter Skins:

    - Dark Rainmeter - Clock, Date, System Info

    - Custom Skin for text at top of each bar, and the planet launcher

Each planet lights up on scroll over and opens the respective folder (text at top), while the System Info planet opens My Computer.

Currently the Anime Planet is lit up.

  2. I'm wanting to set up a home web server for testing purposes, intranet only. Right now I'm planning on setting up openSUSE 11 x86 in Virtual Box (running on Windows 7 RC1 x64) on a 10GB vhd with 512MB RAM. I'm just not sure how to go about partitioning on it. Assuming I can get it set up correctly I'm just wanting to throw various CMS on it to try and learn to use them and also for testing layouts.

Could anyone recommend a good partition structure for said server. Note: I know very little about linux. I've dual booted XP and Ubuntu several times but always end up deleting the Linux partition because I have no real use for it.

  3. Haven't posted here in awhile, I see Arachnid still posts a lot of his creations

I've updated my desktop a lot, moved from XP to Windows 7, new apps, new wallpapers I got from DeviantArt

    Windows 7 x64

    Rainmeter with:

    HUD.Vision

    Enigma (Weather & Calendar)

    Dark Rainmeter (Time & Date)

  4. Not really what I was looking for but it will do for now since I like the image preview. I set up the ext core and lightbox (I might look into JSONP later) and built a table with thumbnail links to a full size image.

Thanks for the response but if anybody has something more automated (maybe I just didn't see the automated part of this) I'd greatly appreciate it.

  5. I'm looking for a simple way to automatically load all photo's from a directory on the website into a simple array, maybe 5 x 5 with multiple pages of photo's (not creating a "pics1.html, pics2.html, pics3.html etc.) and when you click on an image it opens a pop up with an enlarged version. I'm thinking this all might have to be done in flash, so maybe a flash template? I don't know much about flash though I have access to Adobe Flash CS3 and have done minor tweaks to templates before such as changing text replacing images.

    Free is best.

  6. I know nothing of actionscript or flash. I helped a friend set up a website for her photography, she paid for domain space and a flash template but didn't have the software or know-how to customize the template, so I offered to do it for her. I managed to change all the names and such, fairly simple, just finding the right object and editing the text. The problem is on the News page I need to be able to have multiple pages for each month of news (and scrollable in case there's more news than the page can fit in one month but I think I found a tutorial to help me with that.)

The website is here: http://ingenue-photography.com/ and the problem is on the News page.

If you notice the blank space to the right of the picture up top, that's where the template previously had text that were supposed to be links to other month's news but the links weren't set up nor were the other months. I can re-add the text but I need to be able to link the text so it loads just the bottom of the part of that page with each month's news.

If anybody needs the actionscript from the pages or the .fla file itself I can attach those later when I get home.

  7. Looking for diagnostic software I can put on an external drive that will allow me to either boot from it and diagnose a variety of hardware problems or recover data from a bad drive. Something of the sorts anyway. Anybody know of any such software? I saw Ultimate Boot CD but wasn't sure if it was legit or even good.

  8. Have a wireless pci adapter, MN-730, Broadcom chipset, bcm43xG. I've tried many How to's on the Ubuntu forums but nothing seems to work. I don't want use fwcutter (bcm43xx or something like that), or not completely, if I need to use it at first to be able to get online to download something to get ndiswrapper to work I will. I say this because from what I've read, fwcutter will leave me with an 11mbps connection which I is too slow. Am hoping maybe somebody can help me out individually since the how to's aren't helping.

got mn720-ankh.inf installed only problem now is I seem to have misplaced my wireless connection... I have an ethernet connection and a dial up connection (dunno why?) in the networking window but no wireless anymore...

***Nevermind, I dunno what I did but I finally got the wireless to work.

  9. I have created a few wallpapers, unfortunately they were at school (got bored and they had Photoshop CS3) so I can't post them yet.

For now I'll post my latest desktop customizing:

Using ObjectDock, the top dock autohides but I pulled it out for the screenshot. Vista Aurora wallpaper, Razor XP Theme.

  10. OK, I set up a computer out of spare parts I had, not great, believe it's an old Pentium 2, at least 300 MB ram, 4GB HDD. Installed Ubuntu 4.10 on it and now I'm trying to get it online. I've got a crossover cable running between the Linux computer and my Windows XP desktop that has a wireless card connected to the wireless network (router is downstairs).

What I'm trying to figure out is how to set up the connection. Do I need to Bridge my wireless and LAN connections via Network Connections and if so should the Ubuntu computer automatically be able to get online or do I need to do something on the Ubuntu computer?

*EDIT* sorry for doubly post, having problems with ISP lately, accidentally double posted.

  11. Question: has nobody heard of Archos?

I mean ok, yeah, different views, different opinions, but really, why would you spend $400 on a 16GB iPod Touch when you can spend the same amount on an Archos 605 WiFi with 160GB?

I mean is multi-touch and a smaller design really worth it for 10 times less space?

Oh well, I don't mean to bash Apple (well maybe just a tiny bit) but most commonly the only advantage I've found an iPod has ever had over something else of the same type is that it's smaller.

  12. OK so I guess I'm dragging up a semi-old topic but I'm trying to understand Net Neutrality and am writing a persuasive speech for a senior english class over the subject, the problem is I don't know my own position because I don't even understand the subject. I've been googling it for many hours over the past couple days and keep encountering contrasting information.

This is basically what I'm getting from pro-net neutrality sites:

Maintaining Net Neutrality will prevent ISP's (or telecomm companies?) from double charging users. Without net neutrality, the companies can charge content providers (I'm assuming that just means any and all websites?) for a better connection with the ISP's users. So the conent providers will have to pay to be in the "fast lane" and if they don't pay, they're stuck in the "slow lane" (or just flat out blocked). This in turn transfers to the content providers either raising prices for their services or placing a price where there previously wasn't one, which means the users not only have to pay the company for internet access but also have to pay providers for their content.

And this is basically what I'm getting from anti-net neutrality sites:

Net Neutrality already exists and is maintained by laws already in place preventing the companies from doing what was stated above (though I believe I have read articles as to the contrary). The problems above are supposedly hypothetical. Regulated Net Neutrality will supposedly prevent growth of the Internet because there is a massive wave of data soon to be sent across the internet and billions of dollars need to be invested in making the internet "smarter, faster and more efficient" and that the money should come from consumers and content providers equally, the cost shared among all.

I've been researching as I was writing this and I guess after writing that I would have to be pro-net neutrality. From what I can see, anti-net neutrality is claiming the whole issue is hypothetical and that there is also soon to be a massive growth in the internet, or the next-generation internet yet this statement itself seems to be hypothetical. The part about wanting to spread the costs between consumers and providers sounds to like the companies just want to make more money by sticking more costs to us for so called "enhanced service" when really they just want to charge more for the same service, and if you don't pay up, you get little or no service.

I guess I'm still trying to figure it out so, if somebody can tell me, have I got the basics of it?

  13. I'm at a LAN, everybody else is able to share their folders and such but I'm unable to. I can get online, play games with them fine but nothing shows up under the Workgroup Computers. Tried typing in the computer in the address bar direct ( \\example ) but it immediately pops up a message saying it can't connect. Have turned of Windows Firewall, have 2 ethernet ports (1 card, 1 integrated) and a wireless card, wireless and ethernet card are disabled, running on the integrated Ethernet. Have tried running the network setup wizard several times in several different ways and nothing works.

    Any ideas?

  14. I'm assuming that you entered the correct encrypted key on your laptop. Because even though it may see the network and show a good signal, it won't connect properly without the right key. You may know this but I figured I better mention it just in case. You could also try a static IP on the laptop. I run static IP's on my network but keep the DHCP on to make it easy to work on other pc's for people. I found running static IP's kept the network running better. At least for my setup anyway.

Yeah, I'm fairly sure I've entered the correct one, I tried a few times to make sure.

I really only tried to help since I didn't see any other help at the time being given. If you do get it to work with encryption please let us know how you got it to connect.

Thank you :D , and will do.

  15. oh look, tootsdog is on both forums haha.

and I've been googling for help too, having no luck.

OK well w/e, I go to command prompt and do a release/renew and here's what I'm getting...

    C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>ipconfig /renew_all

    IP ConfigurationError

DHCP Server Unavailable: Renewing adapter ""

    Windows 98 IP Configuration

    0 Ethernet adapter :

    IP Address. . . . . . . : 169.254.3.47

    Subnet Mask . . . . .: 255.255.0.0

    Default Gateway . . .:

    *EDIT*

Tried pinging the router @ 192.168.2.1

    Destination host unreachable

So it says I'm conected to the wireless network, I can send data, but can't receive data, and I can't even ping the router...?

  16. Could you just install a Software Firewall to keep yourself safe, and just turn off WEP when you are using your Laptop.
That laptop makes mine look like a spring chicken. Mine is also running XP Pro. The only thing I can think of is more ram, bigger swap file but your drive is pretty small so I don't know how much you can do. Probably not worth the cost either unless you found ram at a flea market or fair. Unless someone has a better answer which I would be interested in, I would also say just go with an anti-virus, some malware programs that are manually used to scan instead of running in the back ground and a firewall that is not reliant on allot of resourses. To help improve performance some basic maintenance like a scandisk and then a defrag in safe mode. Maybe also a third party program to control startup programs on boot that are not essential to Windows at startup. I like Mike Linns program but there are others as well that are free. Just a matter of them working with 98.

Basicly it is what it is, so just don't use it for online banking or credit card use.

Well in answer to both of those, I have 3 other computers on this network for one, for two it's not a problem of others accessing my computer without the WEP it's a matter of my father wishing to prevent others from hopping on our network and getting free internet (yet he won't do a thing about our ISP limiting our connection to 1/3 of what he pays for).

So yeah... I don't see how running a software firewall or any sort of anti-virus programs are going to let me browse on a WEP encrypted network.

  17. Well I received a very crappy (IMO) laptop from a friend who had nothing he could do with it and wanted to be rid of it. The only way I could possibly get online with it was via an RJ11 phone jack connection on it. So I bought a cheap Netgear Wireless PCMCIA Card ($15 on TigerDirect) for it (11Mbps). It seems to work fine... except for the fact that I can't receive any data on an encrypted network. I found that by turning off WEP on my network, I can connect and browse easily without problems, but when I turn the WEP back on (and yes the wireless card has up to 128-bit encryption) I can connect to the network but can't actually browse or anything. I tried going to command prompt and doing "ipconfig /release_all" and "ipconfig /renew_all" but it apparently has a problem with DHCP when renewing.

    Any ideas?
