  1. perhaps put up an add or two at your local grocery store, a friend and I did that about 3 months ago for computer repair. Just simple repairs like cleaning up the HDD and setting up some basic security for the client, we charge a flat fee of 25$ a computer (really cheap compared to GeekSquad and the others). We get about 10 to 12 calls a month. Its free advertising so it cant hurt. Give it a shot. Make sure not to come off as a con artist or anything just flat out say what your trying to accomplish.

  2. The older e-machines were not the greatest PC's around. The newer ones have improved greatly. Do you think that e-machines makes their own PSU? No they don't. You need to Get on the people that made the PSU.

Funny you say that i have had over a dozen e-machines mainly cus i have never had one fail on me. My first computer was an emachines(400mhz and a whopping 32mb of ram) and my latest is an emachines(2800+ Athlon XP 1GB RAM) I must have been the lucky customer. I have had the WORST luck with IBM's have had 3 and all three of them went dead within the first year, first was the mobo second was the PSU and 3rd was the BIOS.

  3. The idea of a router is to split an internet connection up among differnt computers, however i wouldnt think they would make you have one, i know my linksys WRT54G doesnt make you have an active broadband connection. Maybe it is something to do with how netgear designs their routers after all if he just wanted a home network why buy a router? a switch is usually cheeper and would be perfect for what he wants to do. A switch is like a router except doesnt have an internet (WAN) port. However later on if he needed the internet for his networked computers the switch should allow it. Hope that helps

  4. Ill second that, however don't limit your search to just dells. Although they are a good computer for the money there are deals out there that give you more bang for the buck cheak out tigerdirect.com, ebay(watch for scams all that, and read EVERYTHING.), new egg, sometimes ive found good deals on yahoo shopping as well. Good hunting ill let you know if i spot anything worth cheaking out.

  5. Use the network setup wizard in my network places it should guide you through it (its very straight forward). After using that restart the computers if not promted to, i find it avoids any complections, when they boot up again go to my network places and you should see a shared folder one for each computer that u can drag and drop files to, erase edit, do whatever. To answer you other question, Wi-fi works at two typical frequencies, 802.11 G and B work at about 2.4 GHZ actual frequency goes out to a longer decimal but as a rule of thumb 1-11 channels work at about 2.4 GHZ Wi-Fi 802.11 A works at 5GHZ which was designed to avoid interfearance. The common interfearance you'll have with 2.4 GHZ is typically your cordless phone if you do experiance this change the router/access points channel. As far as cell phones they work at 800/1600MHZ and i forget the rest of the frequencies which cause interfearance with your spearkers, why? i couldn't tell you. To avoid this there is a way to shield your cable dont honestly know why someone with a lot more knowledge about electronics s/ connections, i know its very annoying to listen to the beep beep from your speakers.

  6. I have a emachines c2782 and got 128MB of ram from a freind to put into it, when i did this i started it up and it says i only have 320MB total (originally 256) im gussing the missing 64MB's is being shared with the onboard video card, however i use an aftermarket video card and dont need the onboard one so how do i disable the onboard video card from using my ram?

  7. we know your not trying to do anything bad, most of us trust you. The fact is that someone we DONT trust could come along read this forum use this information to harm someone and then we would be the ones who were partley at fault because we gave out that sensitive information. sorry perhaps you should email one of us for further help that would make us more comfortable to talk about.

  8. I have been using win server 03 (trial) for about 4 months and just the other day i put back windows XP home edition (the default OS on my computer that i use as a file server for MP3's. I noticed one of my networked drives (drive M:) still had some of the attributes of win server 03. For example to gain access to the drive over my network it asked for crudentials i put in my old user name and password and it granted me access. I am wondering if i can just use my win server 03 trial CD to set my attributes on all my file servers since windows xp home doesnt support simple file sharing or domains. Any ideas on why or the exact reason this happend would be very much appriciated. thanks.

  9. Hey guys, I have a home network consisting of 9 wireless networked computers, all of which are running either windows XP home or pro. i have 4 network drives which i store itunes, mp3s and such to. Is there a way to add user names and passwords to these network drives? i have googled it and all ive found is the same lousy program that puts a password on files. Ex. of what im talking about, I have a laptop and when i open up mycomputer i click on the network drive (m:) then it naturally opens... what i want is when i click on that drive i want it to pop up with an authentication window asking for a user name and password to access this drive. kinda like when you type in 192.168.X.X in a web browser to config a linksys router and it asks for a user name and the default is admin and password is admin... exactly like how that works. I want to do this without buying anything such as novell windows server ect. is there a way to do this through XP pro? i am willing to try anything that is free to download or if windows has incorpertated a feature that would be awsome to know about. thanks a lot. also im open to running linux on my server if thats what it takes. thanks

  10. im really not sure if it would be backed up anywhere. the server that we use is one in the class room and is a tower type which i found out today is administered by our computer teacher... bad thing is he knows very little about networking. soo i dont know if the admins would even bother backing up his server. Also i doubt that the admins would be running a third party service (to trace deletings/editing ect.) since their job is most likely to keep the main servers running.
