  1. OK folks I was just wondering something.  I know I can't use my XP disk and key on installing it on 2 or more computers, but what if someone bought a pc with XP pre-installed but no cd?  Would I be breaking any laws by using my cd, but using the key that they have with your computer?  The computer in question is a fairly new HP with a restore partition on it, but with all of the junk that they load on it, it runs like crap.  Would their key work with a fresh install?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The key won't work, its an oem key for that machine and won't work on a different cd. Unless the pc came with a seperate XP cd , which it doesn't appear to have.

I don't think MSFT would have a problem with you reinstalling it as a plain vanilla setup, although, technically it might violate a OEM agreement with the manufacturer of the pc.

  2. If the system has heat or driver problems already, 3dmark could crash it and possibly increase the impact of the existing problem.  But that's about it.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Turn it into a blazing heap could it? Probably not but you could crash out your system. (unlikely. The test disables tests which your system can not obviously run)

  3. because my brothers computer freezes at mup.sys so i went into windows XP so i could use repair to do te command, but it doesnt let me. So now im like the thousands of others when you search about mup.sys on google, there is no solution, nohthing helps, so im left with a reformat.  so stupid... windows sucks, too he plays games or i would stick him with linux.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

have you tried booting into safe mode to run the sfc /scan nowcommand?

  4. Agreed!!  I always try to thank folks for help. In my opinion, giving the results is the polite thing to do!

AHHH...politeness, civility, gratitude....these are starnge words for most people (unfortunately). I agree , it would be a nic habit but we (people who help on message boards) have been fighting that losing battle for years.

If only wishing made it so huh? :)

  5. ahh scuse me didn't know that. it wasn't too hard for me to remove the hard drive and floppy from a coupla old IBM laptops so i don't suppose this will all that hard but to be honest i have almost no experience with hardware in newer laptops. both these laptops were old 486's one with OS/2 Warp and the other with originally Windows 3.1 Upgraded to 95. :P

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

it don't take much. remove the panel covering the side of the drive then unscrew the screws if needed
    ...from your first answer.

To me that seems to indicate you thought it was a desktop, not a laptop. Thats all I was saying.

Its not hard at all to replace things on newer laptops, thats why they are modular by design. Beats the hell out of the old one where you had to pry up the keyboards and loosen the screen to do just about anything. :)

  6. How does half of a drive go bad? Which half is it? The top or bottom? Left or right? :)

Its generaly smarter to get he replacement or reccomended replacement part rather then just trying to match up whatever is on sale at your local Big Box store.

Laptop drives, unlike desktop optical drives are NOT one size fits all. On a desktop, almost any drive will replace whatever you have, on a laptop, not the case.

  7. For me it is a very disturbing and scary sign of the times. George Orwell's 1984. I am quite sensitive to it.

Corporate profits are out weighing individuals rights and freedoms. Sometimes I feel I see that the emperor has no clothes and I'm the only one that can see

Me thinks you need to get out more....:)

You don't live in a commune by chance do you?...j/k :)

p.s. we all went by the original info provided, don't expect people to know details you haven't included....not many of us are mind readers you know.

  8. It won't reactive again I had to format the drive a couple of times and now it tell me I can't reactivate.

This really pisses me off to have to go through this.  Since that wpa isn't valid what can I do.

I got this copy from a friend with several keys.  I will call him to find out what the deal is, but I really hate the idea of having to go to microsoft to ask for more activations.  No way in hell will I purchase another copy.

What to do?    :angry2:

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You complain that you hate their software yet you steal it. Either buy a license for it or switch to something else. It will reactivate with a current activation code, a free phone call to msft wil get you that...since you seem to feel entitled to everything else free you might as well take them up on their offer of a free phone call.

  9. I think your computer guy stole my margarita machine and had a few too many.

(Is there a 12 step program for outdated tech advice?) :)

As vulnerable as Windows is, sp2 and the crtical updates and patches make it less so. Period. I sincerely doubt "hackers" could get access to those servers and cause a major disruption.

I have sp2 on everything and al the updates and no prroblems so far.

  10. Hello.

I have all my songs on this computer so i really would rather have itunes on here is it possible with ME? or am i just going to have to put it on my lap top?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The only thing that works well with ME is a sledge hammer.

    Don't waste your time.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Not true, a gallon of gas and a match works nicely too! :)

( I shouldn't complain, Compaqs running Windows ME have paid for the better part of my oldest daughters college fund...heh:) )

  11. Got a friends Dell Dimension 4300 PC (XP HOME) and it won't boot. The PS, Ram, Monitor, Mouse, HD are all good. Either a Processor or MOBO. No beeps at all. The HD is spinning up like it is trying to boot. Can I take the HD out of this PC and put it in another PC (take out it's HD) and get some information off the HD. There are the Financial Records for the local Vol. Fire Dept. on it that they need.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You can put the drive in as a second or slave drive but not as the primary drive to boot from (unless the hardware on both pcs is damn near identical). If you slave it in, you should be able to access the data and copy it onto a new hdd.

  12. Hello everyone! I have a problem, I have a wrt54g ver 2 wireless router now I can't get into the routers interface do to password is wrong. I tried reseting the router but that did not work. Does anyone know how I can get back into my router?

    Thank

    Sceeter32

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

There is a reset button on the back of the router which will clear all passwords etc and reset the router to the factory default settings. Consult your local manual for exact location and how long you need to hold in the button for. 10 seconds is usually more then enough.

  13. If she wants to route the internet traffic to the 2nd router, with a different subnet, then she should point the first router at the default gateway of the 2nd and then forward those ports also. Although, I agree, having 2 subnets makes it more cumbersome. Thie first router should be able to handle all of the dhcp so there really is no need for a 2nd one.

She can set the static ip to something like 192.168.X.50 and the dns server to be the gateway address of the router and it should work.

  14. when i say the computer sits idle i mean that no packets are being sent or recieved i ment to say when my network traffic from my computer to the router sorry*** for example i open up firefox or IE 7 and attempt to load ebay.com but when i do that sometimes the computer does absolutly nothing NO packets are sent or recieved but if i click reload then the site loads fine. The hardware: Belkin Pre-N router with 4 port switch, and the computer im using has a linksys wpc 54 G v2...
