  2. Does the whole screen go black?

Have they tries reseating the monitor cable to the PC. Can they try another monitor?

Is XP not booting up all the way. Is the screen going blank and the computer still showing signs of life? (is the hard drive light flickering).

If the computer is running OK. Then I would look at the monitor connection.

But one can never overlook updating drivers.

  3. Mine is quite good. PrairieWave is a new provider and has the first fiber-optic lines in the area. Fiber-optic is run right to my house.

It's only four years old and gives me a 1Mbps standard unlimited connection. They also have a dedicated 1.5Mbps, and the "Games Edge" connection you can get, with a 1Mbps upload speed.

  4. Looks like Feb. 27th for Vista SP1 to be fully released. Mark your calender.

Remember, if you have the Beta installed. You will have to uninstall it first. And it takes almost as long to uninstall as it does to install it.

But, after you uninstall the beta and before you install the full release. Reboot your computer. (this is a definite)

You will then have to re-install any Windows Updates that came out after the beta was installed. (Reboot if required).

Then run disk cleanup and/or ccleaner. Defrag your hard drive. Shut down System Restore, (to clean it out). Reboot your computer again and then re-enable System Restore. Then create a new restore point.

Now go ahead and install the Service Pack for Vista. Yes.... More rebooting.

After installing SP1. reboot your computer one more time to work everything in. Then do a disk cleanup and/or run ccleaner. Defrag your hard drive again. Then one more reboot.

I know, I know... seems like a lot of reboots. But hey... You need to get your system cleaned up good and ready for the final product. And then merge the two together gracefully.

    Same goes for XP SP3

  5. Upon helping a member here at BTs. I discovered you can no longer set the root association in Vista. How I missed something like this with all the playing I have done....

I discovered the Folder Options window in Windows Vista is missing the File Types tab found in earlier versions of Windows. So how do one go about editing file type associations in Windows Vista?

I have discovered three way to do this.

    First Way

Open your "Start Menu" and choose "Default Programs" in the right column.

Then choose "Associate file types or protocol with a program"

    Second Way

    1. Right-click a file of the type you want to change, and select Properties.

    2. In the General tab, click the Change button.

    3. Choose a program from the list, or click Browse to select an .EXE file on your hard disk.

Third Way (view a list of file types):

    1. Open Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel Home, click Programs, and then click Make a file type always open in a specific program.

Or, in the Classic View, open Default Programs and then click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.

    3. Highlight a file type in the list and click Change Program.

Unfortunately, neither method in Vista allows you to choose anything but the default programs, such as your programs listed in your files' context menus.

Searching around the net. I did come across one program that gives you the tools needed to associate extensions to the root files.

It's called Creative Element Power Tools. Found here at creativelement.com

Creative Element Power Tools hosts six categories of tools.

    1. File Tools

    2. Internet Tools

    3. Search Tools

    4. Folder Tools

    5. File Dialog Tools

    6. Interface Tools

With sub-categories for each set of tools. You can customize many aspects of Vista. Including Control Menu Speed, Changing the Registered Owners and Configure Hot Keys. It also list the root extension and file types now missing in Vista. And allows you to reset them if you accidentally move a file type.

I have been going through this program and I feel that this is a essential add-on to Vista for Power Users. (I'm going to keep this one around)

But read through the listing for using the Creative Element Power Tools on their website, to get a understanding on how to use these tools safely.

  6. Can you restore your system back to a time before you made this change?

To do this. Type "sys" into the "Start Search" box at the bottom of the "Start Menu" (under "All Programs"). You will see the system restore option in the list under "Programs".

If that doesn't work. You may have to do a system repair.

First, Boot from your Vista installation CD.

Select your Vista Install from the list in “Windows Boot Managerâ€

    · Microsoft Vista Setup (x86)

    · Microsoft Vista Setup (x64)

    Press enter.

You will then see “Windows is Loading Filesâ€.

Next, the “Language Screen†will come up. Since you have already selected this option when you installed Vista, just click on “Nextâ€.

Now you will see the “Vista Installation Screenâ€

    DO NOT CHOOSE “Install Nowâ€

Instead, towards the bottom left of the window you will see.

    · “What to know before installing Windowsâ€

    · “Repair your Computerâ€

Choose and click on “Repair your Computerâ€

You will then come to the “System Recovery Optionsâ€. Choose “Microsoft Windows Vista†from the list. Then click “ Nextâ€.

    Choose “Startup Repairâ€

Automatically fix problems that are preventing Windows from starting:

Startup Repair is an automated repair process that scans your Vista installation for problems and attempts to automatically fix them. When you select to repair Vista from the Vista setup screen, and Vista detects problems, this process will be started automatically.

  7. Just got off the phone with my old buddy Steve.

Say... Ah.... Option-Shift-K.... Steve would like to know your home address and Name...

He'll be sending a couple of his lawyers over... They want to talk to you....

  8. One of the best ways I know to clean up a system is in the following.

    System Tune-up:

OK, lets start with a basic cleanup of your system.

Open up your start menu. Then go to "All Programs", > "Accessories", > "System Tools". And look for "Disk Cleanup" Select your main drive, usually drive C. And click OK. This could take some time, so don't worry. Then put Checks only on "Temporary Internet Files", "Recycle Bin" and "Temporary Files". Click OK. Then YES.

Next we need to clean out your browser cache and cookies. Open Internet Explorer. On the top toolbar, choose "Tools", then "Internet Options" On the General Page, under "Temporary Internet Files". Choose "Delete Files" and "Clear History". Then go to “Settingsâ€, > “View Files†and remove any cookies you really don't need. Which might be only leave a handful left.

Now if you don't already have them,

    Download AdAware.

    And Spybot S&D.

Update them both. On Spybot, Click to "Immunize†and for now close them both out.

Now to get more into a system cleanup.

Go to your Start Menu, to your "My computer†Icon and R-Click on it. Then down to "Properties". Then click on the "System Restore" tab. Then put a check at "Turn off System Restore". Click Apply and OK. Remember this part so you can turn "System Restore" back on.

Now Click on your "Start Menu" again, and click on the "My Computer" icon. On the part that says "Hard Disk Drives", R-Click on your Drive C ©. Then down to "Properties" and click to open. On the main window that opens, choose the "Tools" tab. On "Error Checking", Click "Check Now" A new window will open. Put a check mark on both options and click OK. You will be informed that it can't run now and would you like to run "Disk Check" on next reboot. Click OK.

Now go to your "Start Menu" once again. To your "Run" icon. And type "msconfig " without the quotes. This will open up the "System Configuration Utility". Click on the "BOOT.INI" tab and put a check on "/SAFEBOOT" Click Apply and OK. You will be informed that you will need to reboot your Computer. Click OK. Remember this last path. You will need to come back to this part To get your Computer back into normal mode You do so by opening up the "System Configuration Utility". And on the "General Page" click on "Normal Startup".

Now we are ready to reboot the PC.

We are going to reboot into "Safe Mode"

Since we enabled "Scan Disk" to run on Reboot, this is going to start before windows loads. This is a 5-step process. Now do not worry, steps 4 and 5 take some time to run. In step 4, it might seem like nothing is going on, but just hang in there. Step 4 takes the longest, and seems like it just sits there for some time.

After this is done, Windows will load in "Safe Mode".

Find the AdAware icon. And open up the program. Click on start. And place a check on "Perform Full System Scan". Then click "Next". Let it run through. When it is finished, click Next. Place a Check mark on everything that was found. And click next again. It will ask if you’re sure you want to remove these items. Click OK.

Next find the "Spybot S&D" Icon. And choose to "Check For Problems" It will now do a scan. When it is finished. Place a check ONLY ON THE ITEMS IN RED. Then check to "Fix Items"' Allow for a backup to be made.

The last step will be to Defragment your Hard Drive.

On your "Start Menu" Go to "All Programs", > "Accessories", > "System Tools". And look for "Disk Defragmenter" Chose this program, and highlight your C Drive and click to "Defragment".

If this has not been done for a while, this process could also take some time. This will get all your files back in order.

When this is done. Go to your "Start Menu" once again. To your "Run" icon. And type " msconfig " without the quotes. On the "General" page, Place a check at "Normal Startup" click Apply and OK. Now reboot your PC.

Now hopefully everything is working, and your PC has had a tune-up and cleaning.

    As for installing Vista.

You are doing a upgrade using the upgrade disk I assume.

Use the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard Here is a article that explains things.

    Windows-Easy-Transfer

NOTE: When you do a upgrade verses a clean install to Vista. The Product Key for XP is voided out.

    Here is what to expect.

    Downgrading back to XP

Any more questions, just ask away.

  9. From goggling the error message. It appears to be a symptom from either a keylogger or some malicious melware. If this is your home computer, then you don't want either one on your PC.

We will need to find out where the problem is at and then help you clean it up.

If you could follow the directions in this post.

    How-To-Post-A-Hijackthis-Log

And then post the resaults here.

  10. Welcome to BTs....

One way is to use Keywords. Not to many, but about what you site is about.

After I figured out keyword combinations it moved half of my pages to googles front page within a week. But google looks for a sites age and page numbers. The older a site and the more pages you have the better.

  11. M$ is shooting for February 15th as a release date for the Service Packs.

I won't go into the Service Pack details.

XP SP3 will like in the past install only what is needed from WU (windows update). So depending on your system configuration, will determine the download size. Also XP3 will no longer re-ask for product activation. As long as XP is activated.

The complete XP SP3 Stand Alone Client will have all previous updates included. (SP1, SP2)

Which will be great for the shop owners/repair techies. So if you have the original XP (non sp1 or sp2). You will have everything you need on one disk. YAY!!!

SP1 for Vista refines Vista for better performance, decreased boot/shutdown times. And fixes a load of bugs. And added a whole mess of updated driver support.

So if your running XP or Vista. I highly suggest getting the Service Pack installed on your favorite machine.

  12. Thanks all..

Well. I hope I can make it because the wife wants to see that the drugs do to me first. And with her still smoking It might be a workout.

Marty.. I live a mile above sea level.. So a big gulp of air is hard for anyone.... Maybe I'll swing down your way and stay with you until I get through this... :D
