  1. Hey bubba

I've had alot of problems myself.

I've found that since about ver 1.0, FF LOVES to crash, especially if you have alot of extensions.

I just recently uninstalled and reinstalled, and took it easy on the extensions, only using Mozilla approved ones, and it works ok. Still crashes if I leave it open over night, depending on the site that I am on.

Keep in mind, when you uninstall, you should wipe out ALL traces. Save your bookmarks

I deleted the profile, and EVERY reg entry that had to do with FF

Those who have no problems with FF are not power users

    Argue amongst yourselves..

  2. If you want to remove your tracks in Opera just go to Tools and click Delete private data...

Opera - Naked Joy of Surfing:D

Delete private data: Browsing in sites leaves tracks but those tracks can be easily removed when you use Opera. Don't be lured by the temptive banner that you see on the Web! To empty history, cache, history and other - in detail - go to Tools > Delete private data. Beware, that to clear the data, Opera will close all open pages! You can also have more detailed control over your private data:

Delete individual cookies: Tools > Cookies

Delete new cookies on exit: Tools > Preferences > Privacy > Delete new cookies when exiting Opera

History: Remove individual pages from history by using the History window (press Ctrl + Alt + H). When a page is not in the history, it will not appear in auto-complete but it may appear in Typed in addresses (drop-down).

I may have to finally switch to Opera. I always wanted to control my cookies better (maybe FF has an extension for that)

Besides, I have been getting more and more disapointed with FireFox over the past year or so

In reference to the original subject, I remember using a program called "Spider" or "Spider Bite" several years ago that deleted the contents of the index.dat files

  3. Go to Start > Run

    Type %temp%

    That will open the folder

    Ctrl+ a selects all files

    Hit the delete key

    Hit Enter at the prompt

If and when you get a prompt that it cannot delete a file in use, it will be the first file listed in the folder

Hold down Ctrl and click on the file to un-highlight it

    Hit delete key

    Hit enter at the prompt

    Lather, rinse repeat

The time it took to type all of the above out, this process could've been performed on 10 computers ;)

Don't forget to empty your Temporary Internet Files also.

This can use up alot of space, and all of the porn you have been surfing shows up in there

  4. it was the network card. I installed the old HP network card with an Intel chip and voila I'm typing this now. I went through a reinstal and losing all my friends stuff for nothing. No biggy though. All it was was music and other random crap he got off the internet. he can recover his 100 MB of stuff pretty quick. Who woulda know the network card was freezin the whole system.

I knew it from basically reading the title of your thread, and I can't believe it wasn't suggested to you right away.

  5. Strange, but that page of "plug-ins" are the actual programs themselves, not plugins

open FF and in the address bar typ the following:

    about:plugins

This will tell you all the plugins you have. more than likely your missing the plugin you need for it. there should be a little drop down bar, like the IE ACtiveX warning one, that recommends you to install the specific plugin the site uses.

    Hope this helps.

It helps me. I need to know MIME types for my firewall. Now I know where to start unblocking things that arent listed in my error logs.

    [rant]

It seems everything worked fine for me, until I updated to FF 1.5 this morning. Now even after updating my extensions, things are still broke...oh well, just venting...[/rant]

  6. I ammended my first post, with what you wnated to do

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Sweet, thanks very much

I thought I had a bookmark on how to do that, but I couldn't find it.

I forgot about using cat to write out contents...

I learn so much (sometimes TOO much) about CLI everyday.

I have several conf files I want to experiment with, and this will probably save me literally hours!

    Thanks again. :matrix:

  7. I am not sure I am following. Do you want to put them in something like a zip file? in linux there is the tar file.

the idea would be to make a directory, and call it for example: conf_files, then move all of your .txt files to the directory called conf_files.

now to tar up the files into one file do the following command

    tar -cf conf_files.tar conf_files

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

No, I wanted to copy all of the information in the 3 seperate configuration files into one single configuration file.

I just copied the info from the 3 files individually and pasted it into one file.

I was just thinking it would be cool if there were a quicker, easier way to do that.

    Thanks for responding

  8. Hi guys

I was wondering if it is possible to copy the contents of several files into a new file?

    I have 3 files conf1.txt, conf2.txt, conf3.txt

I want to put the contents of all 3 files into one file; masterconf.txt

Is this possible? If so, can someone give me the syntax?

I tried a few different cp commands, but without the desired results.I haven't seen this covered in Google, only copying multiple files into one directory, etc..

    Thanks!

    Edit:

I've found batch files from Googling, but that's not exactly what I am looking for, and my feeble mind doesn't understand them.

  9. My friend just called me.  She is running XP and her printer (an HP I assume) was printing some documents when she lost power to her computer and printer.  When she turned the printer back on the document was stuck in the print queue and she couldn't print anything else.

She right-clicked and deleted the job, which is said "deleting..." but now it's been a whole day and the job won't go away.

She has unplugged the printer and plugged it back in, restarted, everything.....short of uninstalling the printer.

Does she need to uninstall and reinstall or is there an easier way?

    Thanks in advance.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc

    hit enter

Scroll to the print spooler service, and stop/ restart it

    That should do the trick

  10. I have Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spyware Blaster, and Spybot Search and Destroy. These are in addition to McAfee Personal Firewall Plus and McAfee Virus Scan. ? I don't want competing programs doing the same thing if this is going to create problems,

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Adaware and Spybot basically do the "same thing" as you put it, but it is good to have both. The reasoning is that not all spyware definitions are exactly the same, therefore Adaware may find some things that Spybot does not, and vice versa.

SpywareBlaster is not a scanner. It sets killbits that help prevent spyware from being installed in the first place. When you run this program, you need to Update, then Enable All Protection. You should do this every couple of days or so.

Heres a tutorial on how to use SpywareBlaster and what it does. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...showtutorial=49

I personally hate McAfee, so I cant really comment on it.

If you like it, then it should be fine. Keep in mind, an anti virus program such as McAfee and Norton are not the same as a spyware scanner such as Adaware and Spybot

    So, in a nutshell...

You can use as many spyware scanners as you want. Some pickup things that others do not.

You should only use one firewall and one Anti Virus program, as these have processes that run in the background that could cause conflicts if you run more than one.

SpywareBlaster really doesn't run, it just makes adjustments to the registry that helps prevent certain spyware from getting installed in the first place.

I think that you have plenty of protection, and it is not overkill at all

    Let me suggest one more...

    IESpyad

This puts harmful websites in your Internet Explorer restricted site zone.

Run IESPYad, and it will extract to C:\iespyad

Open that folder, and click on install.bat

    Then choose option 2

    Then choose option 1 (yes)

When it tells you to press any key to continue, press the space bar

    Then choose 2(exit)

  11. Hi guys and gals

I am working on a remote computer that has Symantec Corporate edition installed (not sure which version, I think it's 10)

There is a server group in there that we could no longer unlock. It said that the password is incorrect, but I know it isn't

So we just installed a new server group.

    This was several months ago.

I was in there today trying to figure out how to delete the old group without the password to no avail.

There is a tool called iforgot.exe that shows the encrypted password, and you are supposed to contact support and have them decrypt it for you. For a huge fee

Upon running this program and Googling to no avail, suddenly the new server group is not accepting the password!

Does anyone know how, short of uninstalling, I can reset the password? I've looked in the registry and can't find any stored passwords.

I've been through google and Symantecs site to no avail. I'm hoping to find someone that had the same problem

    EDIT

    Just found this

    http://blog.thedevins.com/archives/000426.php

That value is in my registry, so the password 'symantec' unlocked my last server group, but not the old one I was trying to delete in the first place.

    I'll keep plugging...

  12. Hi DueceHearts

You should just take the advice given here, and abandon your thread at G4

As far as I know, all of the qualified log readers have left G4's tech forum.

You also shouldn't cross post HJT logs, because the log readers have no way of knowing what you may have already done, therefore your computer can get screwed up.

    I'll post at G4 also

  13. I know how to do this. As you stated and I stated in the G4 forums that would be a bandaid to the problem. I'd like WSC to go back to correctly reporting NAV's status. This notification tells me two things: 1) WSC is incorrectly reporting that NAV is off OR 2) There is in fact an issue with NAV even though it appears to be running and enabled. Which is why I don't want a bandaid fix.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I remember there being an issue with that after SP2

You may have to get an update from either Symantecs website or windows Update.

Dont know if these will help or not

  14. All the info you need should be provided in the links and posts above.

I believe you can run the wizard on your XP machine, then save it to disk and run it on the 98 machine. That would be the quick way (if it works) but you won't learn anything that way.

The router doesn't need to know anything (workgroup name) about your network. It should work fine out of the box

  15. Im a good boy and she is giving me $200 to build it.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

In otherwords, she is willing to pay $450 and you are going to put together a $250 system, install a copy of win98, an older OS (and is it already installed on a computer? Remember, one copy one computer you cannot legally install it on another unless you wipe the first). Then you will pocket the other $200.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

If that is the case, BAD GRADSON!!!!

Get her the Dell, a kiss on the cheek, and promise to help her with future issues...

    Shame, shame, son!!

  16. At the request of TT, I am reposting my problem from G$ to here:

Here is a link for reference, but I'll give more info in this thread

    http://forums.g4tv.com/messageview.cfm?cat...threadid=470462

I cannot use another client, and I'd rather not reinstall outlook, as I have other domain users on that computer that are configured and working. I also wouldn't be able to get there til tomorrow, as my car is in the shop.

Heres the setup. Keep in mind there is still alot about networking(especially with samba) that I dont understand.

The computer logs into a samba domain. I added 3 users to the SuSe server, then added them as samba users.

All 3 users share this machine.

I logged into the Windows XP machine under each user name, and configured Outlook for thier e-mail addresses, which use POP/SMTP

The first 2 I got configured, but could only send but not receive mail.

I later found out it was because of Norton's spam filter, and I am a dummy!

Those 2 outlook accounts work fine now.

So on the third account, I logged into the domain, and this time configured Outlook to point at an Exchange server, knowing full well we weren't using Exchange. I used the same IP that I used on the other configurations.

I was just experimenting and seeing if there were other more in depth options, and figured I could just reconfigure later.

    That was my mistake.

Now when I open Outlook under that user name, It looks for the Exchange server that isn't there. I have no way to option out.

When I open Outlook, this is the error I get:

    outlook1.jpg

I hit OK or x out, as these are my only options, I get this:

    outlook2.jpg

Then I hit any of the options, erase the username and or IP, etc...etc...I get this:

    outlook3.jpg

Then I hit OK or x out, and the program just closes. I just want the program to stay open so I can reconfigure it!!

    Here is what I tried.

I deleted that users profile from Windows. In order to be able to do that, I had to disable them in Samba.

    I deleted thier C:/docs and settings/username

I recreated the Samba account, and it recreated the profile, but Outlook still behaved the same way.

I searched the registry, and couldn't find anything pointing to the IP for an Exchange server, but I did find that IP in a reg key for Outlook. I deleted that, and it still didnt resolve the problem, so I put the key back, as that IP still refers to the POP/SMTP server for the other domain users

I renamed outlook.ost to outlook.ost.old, and it just recreates a new one.

In order to make the Outlook.ost an offline folder, you have to be able to access the program, so thats not an option either

I just wish that I could get Outlook to stay open so I can create the account properly and unpoint it from the non existant Exchange server.

Any help appreciated, and remember, this is Outlook 2003, not Outlook Express.

    Thanks guys
