  1. I think my first thought is usually something along the lines of, "OH GAWD, why am I awake already?", usually followed by looking at the clock and re-asking. It seems the older I get, the less I sleep. I've been staying up for 24+ hours quite often lately and still only sleeping for 4 or 5 hours right after it...Sometimes I wish I could just sleep for a couple days straight.

  2. Is you?

I was just wondering if it's like this for most of you guys (and gals).

Since most of the regulars and some of the irregulars that come here, have at least some basic level of tech savvy-ness, do you find that you know no one IRL that can do what you can on PCs?

I pretty much have to dumb down every tech related conversation I have with anyone for fear of their eyes glazing over, tilting their head like a dog, followed by the inevitable "huh". Or worst yet, when they humor you and have no idea what you're talking about.

Self-admittedly, I don't have a huge circle of friends but the ones I have, have almost nothing in common with me on a basic level and absolutely nothing in common when it comes tech stuff. Sometimes I like being the coolest geek they know but most of the time it irritates me when I'd like to have a conversation with someone that I know won't have a clue.

    Linux related conversations, nope.

    Web design, nope.

Graphic design, nope....but they do like the pretty pictures - especially the ones that look like small shiny objects

    Home recording, once again, nope.

Man, I gotta upgrade my friends!

Can you tell I'm bored?

  3. Since I didn't even really know about linux until maybe '04, most of those on the list were quite a few versions later. But if IRC, my first distro was RH (not sure what version), then Mandrake, then just played around with every other (deb, gentoo, slackware, blah blah blah) that I could manage to install until finally sticking with (X)ubuntu.

  4. I wouldn't use this particular example to draw the conclusion that "women are nutz." After all, YOU were thinking of HER and either did, or were tempted to, look her up before she contacted you. Unless you're saying in a round-about way that YOU'RE nutz!

    -----

Heh, Oh, no "round-about" about it, I'm a self-admitted nut.

And to be honest, I came to the conclusion that women are nuts a long time ago....but it can still baffle me at times.

The "particular example" in this case isn't really the fact that she initiated contact again (that part is only a little spooky to me now)...it's how aggressively she did so and started blowing up my phone with texts, like she wants to get to know me all over again via that method....eg. sending me an email and then texting to see if I read it while I was busy replying to it, and then expects me to keep texting while I'm typing out an email....yeah, I consider that somewhat nutty behavior.

I told her to shut up and read the email and I'll catch her later....probably be another couple of years 'til I hear from her again

  5. OK, sorry for doing the super retro-bump but I thought I'd share this....

As you may have read my first post....She didn't end up calling me back until spring of '07...It was a very brief phone call and somewhat anti-climactic....Just the usual catch up stuff and told me she was pregnant with twins and she'd write me a letter and send pics, my curiosity was quenched and I moved on...but no letter ever came. I don't know why I googled her later in '07 but found the birth announcement...didn't send a congrats or anything. She left me a happy birthday message that year and then nothing in '08

Well, she crossed my mind a bit the other night...yesterday morning she started texting me...A LOT!

Sent emails, pics and more texts...and started bright and early again this morning.

    Women are fricken nutz

  6. Well, a quick googling brought up a couple different ways...and these are just copy & pastes 'cause I'm lazy :)

Step 1: Open the PPT or PPS file inside Microsoft Powerpoint and choose File -> Save As.

Step 2: From the "Save As type" drop down, choose the Web Page format (*.htm, *.html). Type a file name and click save.

Step 3. Open the file folder where you saved the Presentation as HTML and there you'll see another subfolder with the same name that should contain all files embedded in the .pps.

If it's a .wav (as it should be), you could use something like this (cnet | download.com) or some other sound editing program that has the capability to save as .wma

    or

    Program: PowerpointImageExtractor

    Author: Alain Lecomte

    Ware: (Freeware)

    http://alainlecomte.free.fr/

    http://alainlecomte.free.fr/Download.htm

PowerpointImageExtractor is a freeware to extract pictures and wave files embedded in the MS PowerPoint presentations and slideshows (.PPT and .PPS files).

The pictures and sound files found are saved in a separate folder. PowerpointImageExtractor runs under Windows 95-98-XP-NT-Vista Download PowerpointImageExtractor V1.2 (960 Kb) http://alainlecomte.free.fr/PowerpointImageExtractor.zip

Again, you'd need to convert it to .wma

    Hope this helps

  7. Well tictoc5150 according my weather widget 10 is going to be the high today for us... I wish I would have bough a remote starter.

Gotta leave to pick up my kid in a bit...now -12....the car wouldn't start with the remote... just kept clicking. I had to go out and use the key...was just clicking for that too but kept trying and finally got it goin'

  8. OK, I could have sworn that someone here (possibly Honda_Boy) started a thread regarding this topic...damned if I could find it though.

So, I thought I'd relay my newfound experience....And if you're wondering, Yes, I did break the first rule in computing....no backing up!!!!

    The scenario:

Antec Sonata II case, 2 ATA HDDs (1 system,1 storage) in the bottom 2 bays, 2 SATAs (both storage, obviously) in the top 2 bays - probably less than a cm in space for airflow... (all drives coming up on about 4 years old, and run almost 24/7 for that long)....Everest and Speedfan have both always reported that the ATAs were normal but SATAs were running hot (temp range:125F-135F under load)...I did nothing!

Starting a couple months ago, one of the SATAs would go MIA from "my Computer" which would make windows have a conniption...I didn't consider the temps as a factor since it seems they've always run at that temp, I thought it could be something else....swapped out SATA cables for new ones and it seemed to solve it.

Yesterday, I see a little yellow triangle with a ! in the tray (hmmm, wtf is that?, never seen one of those before). I check the system event log and the whole log was nothing but "error detected on device blah blah blah..."

Checked "my computer" expecting to not see the drive there....but it was and I could still browse through all folders...However, I couldn't access a single file, windows would freeze, explorer.exe would crash then unfreeze...mounted the drive with linux to rule out a windows issue.... same result more or less.

Duh, should I try backing up the drive now?...

So, I pull the drive, throw it in a ziplock freezer bag and into the freezer it goes....14 hours later, I hook it back up (leaving it sitting outside the case) and windows won't boot (freeze  at the boot screen), I keep trying...finally boots. I guess the drive was too cold to spin up...As soon as it got to a usable state, I started dragging and dropping like a madman....watching the temps on the drives the whole time...they went from 70F to about 135F over the course of about an hour.

The end result, 100% data recovery (over 200GB)....guess I need to get burning some dvds.

Both SATAs are still hooked up (1 installed, 1 outside the case) and running at about 111F ...While their life expectancy doesn't look great, I might install a front fan on the case to see just how long they'll last.

Sorry for the wall of text :)

  9. did you not like it when it was not so simple??

    heh, trick question?

double negatives confuse old people like me...lol

I do think I got a certain satisfaction out of beating an install into submission and then breaking it....These fancy new "features" to make it more friendly are just annoyances...or maybe I was just cranky and too damn lazy to manually set up my partitions. Incidentally, I did end up wiping the install, reconfigured the partitions manually and installed Xubuntu so I could apt-get what I want without the bloating of gnome or KDE.

  10. Hey Chief,

In your first post you referred to tabs in your browser and out of habit I immediately thought firefox but you saying "favorites" is an IE/Windows reference...I browsed the whole thread and might have missed it.

If I used IE, I would most likely try to reinstall it given that it can't seem to find the favorites folder.

It could be and most likely is a missing registry entry that would something like that...the reinstall might fix it.

    Or I could know nothing...lol

edit: you might want to confirm the "favorites" is where it should be (C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Favorites)

  11. I'm really impressed with the hardware detection of Ubuntu 8.10 and recommend it without reservation. Also, Ubuntu is probably the best in the business with non-destructively re-sizing a Windows partition to set-up a dual boot with Windows/Ubuntu.

    Hey hitest,

After a bit of a hiatus from linux I decided to throw ubuntu on my notebook and was more than irritated with its insistence on setting its install on the windows partition when I had a partition allocated for its use...I didn't want to manually create all partitions it needs but at least thought I could tell it to use any partition on the drive...besides that annoyance and the prism driver for my wireless not working like it did in previous releases I'd still probably recommend it as user-friendly

  12. WOW tictoc. Jacob has really grown since I saw baby pictures. Good looking kid. They grow up so fast.

    Take care

    Barb

    <hijack>

Hi Barb...Yeah, at 3 1/2 he's quite a handful now. Since I don't really like his mother most of the time, I'll have to take credit for his good looks...lol Oh, and I find that they don't grow up so fast, it's that they make you so old... faster!

    </hijack>

  13. Hey TK,

I've just recently started dropping by more often too...I took over a year off from most things tech related to try and get in touch with the real world and spend more time with my little one. The time spent with the kid is never wasted time but I found out the real world is highly overrated...lol

And since I haven't shown off Jacob in quite some time...

(Not quite recent but he hasn't changed much from when it was taken...lol)

    Oh....and welcome back :D
