Engineers and technicians use spacecraft models and systems to determine the various functions of the spacecraft and to build them properly. Spacecraft are also tested during launches and landings to see if they can withstand these extreme conditions.
Mission control is another facet of aerospace engineering. This involves the control of all activities related to the flight, including the Orbit, the Velocity, the position, and the attitude of the spacecraft. Control of all this data is essential to a successful flight. Mechanics and technicians are responsible for performing a variety of duties in this area, including countdown maneuvers, vehicle positions, and connections, and the actual liftoff.
Aerospace engineers also inspect and maintain control surfaces, which include radiators, coolants, fabrications, hydraulic systems, and fuel lines. They test all components and oversee everything from the smallest mechanical change to the largest. These people are a crucial part of a successful flight. When failure occurs, aerospace engineers must be able to quickly analyze and decide how to fix it.
Aerospace engineers also examine outer space travel and the various technologies that support it. One area of research includes studying the effects of G force on spacecraft. The G force can have a significant impact on the performance of an aircraft or a spacecraft. Engineers monitor outer space activities to determine if the effects they're observing are normal reactions caused by that force. They study the effects of G force on spacecraft by tracking positions and velocities and studying the effects of light and sound on it.
Astronautical engineers must also study the various flight environments that astronauts will face while they are in orbit. They need to model systems and how they will behave in those environments. They test flight scenarios, like lifting a weight to reach a specific altitude, deploying and landing a craft, returning a craft to earth, and other important operations. These engineers are key not only to the success of space flight but also to the safety of astronauts. NASA and other space agencies rely heavily on the knowledge and skills of this type of astronautical engineering.
Aerospace engineering jobs require that engineers have a wide variety of skills. They must be skilled at analyzing and designing flight vehicles, spacecraft, and other components. They must be skilled at troubleshooting problems that occur during flight. They must know how to program flight controls and instruments, how to build solid-state electric engine systems, and how to maintain and repair them. The aerospace engineering field is continually growing, with positions available all over the world for talented engineers.
