  1. Hey guys, This place has always helped me in years past, and for that I am so thankful! I have a new question for everyone: So I have a HP Mini 1000 1030NR, with windows XP. Me and a friend recently took it apart to inspect the hard drive inside it, since we thought the hard drive inside might be bigger than the system was reporting. My friend has experience taking laptops apart, and didn't force anything out. He has the tools to do it, all that jazz. Now, upon booting it up, the screen is completely blank. I can't remember if we had it working in between the time we put it back together or no
  2. Wow, whatever driver you found worked very nicely. I no longer lag when watching videos, scrolling is not slow, and everything is running much smoother. My start menu even loads faster. I thought the driver I installed was the only one available - for some reason I couldn't find the Catalyst Driver that I used to have. In order to get it to work, however, I had to download .NET framework 2.0. Thank you everyone all for all your help and suggestions! I'm so happy to have my computer back to normal.
  3. Well, my system information says "Radeon 9500 Pro/ 9700 Family (Microsoft Corporation)" however, when I customized my purchase years ago I remember it was one of those (either 9500 or 9700) but it wasn't a PRO. Also, I definitely know that title has changed since I updated the drivers and rolled back since ATI doesn't support it any more. It never used to say Microsoft Corporation.
  4. Everything has a delay, including when I click on the start menu, I have to wait for the programs to appear. Whenever I am scrolling, whether online or in a word document for example, the screen has to "catch up." Any sort of video is very laggy; youtube is out of the question all together. I've got one gig of memory in there; even though this is an eight year old desktop (Dell Dimension Desktop 4550) I have never experienced this before. It has never been this slow in all the years I have had it. This is not a laptop, so I suppose that wouldn't be the issue? One thing I have definitely noti
  5. Gladly! How about a screenshot instead? I whited out my name, so that's why you've got some strange blotches under the user name tab. It's attached. I will update you on the Dell support - they have still been unable to figure things out. Tonight we tried uninstalling SP3 to see if that might have been slowing things down. We also tried disconnecting my wireless. I turned off any automatic updates from going on in the background, since I read somewhere that multiple svchost.exe's can mean that you've got automatic updates stuck in a loop. Still, my CPU spikes for no apparent reason, even when
  6. I contacted Dell with this issue and they helped me remotely. They said there is nothing more they can do. My computer still runs way too slow for a brand new installation of windows. There are still plenty of system processes causing my CPU to spike. I turned off all automatic updates for both Windows and AVG but still have plenty of svchost.exe's. Any thoughts?
  7. Does anyone know how to reduce these svchost processes?
  8. So I recently purchased the new Office 2010 from my school. I am dealing with a particular issue with the new Outlook. Both Outlook 2007 and 2010 have an easy method to set up your gmail (or other email accounts) with office. My gmail is synced with Outlook every time I get a new email/send, or whatever. My issue is that now I have an Outlook Data File in addition to a gmail account. This means there are duplicates of inbox, sent folders, etc. Sometimes when I type a new email and save it, the draft goes to the Outlook Data File and not the gmail draft folder. Is there a way to merge them? I t
  9. Thanks for responding. There actually isn't much trail software with this installation. Maybe it's because I didn't have all the CD's that came with the computer and had to add a lot of stuff manually. Yes, I definitely have way too many svchost processes running. I looked into that actually - and read online about what you are saying. The site basically said that was an issue before Microsoft released a new update for XP that should take care of it. I have been using windows update a lot, and it says everything is current, and yet my CPU is still overrun by svchost... Suggestions?
  10. Hello everyone. I haven't posted here in years, but I remember how incredibly helpful you guys were in helping me deal with a major issue. I couldn't even remember the name of this site! I had to google my own user name. So I've been dealing with my old desktop for the past few weeks. I was getting a bluescreen upon booting, and after much failed troubleshooting, I had to reinstall windows. I've been on the phone with Dell a lot, trying to work through everything, including the installation (drivers were giving me a hard time). I have a fresh new copy of XP installed, and just recently went th
  11. That is my theory as well. Catch you guys later!
  12. Great news. The problem is fixed, and I have yet to reformat. This is what worked, from Geeks To Go. I am however, looking into reformatting anyways. Everyone I have talked to recommeded it. I haven't done so in a year! Thank you so much to all those who have been a huge help, especially Jeff, Matt, TheTerrorist_75, and others.
  13. Yes, at one time my PC had both. My home CD has SP1. Can I just do a reinstall and then DL SP2?
  14. I did a repair install by uninstalling SP1 and then doing a repair instal via my XP CD. I am not on a network, and the problems surfaced before I had even met Jeff...
  15. I went ahead and did a repair install. I reinstalled SP2, and to my suprise, nothing has changed. Still having the problem. It was a good try though! Anything else lol?
  16. I will try these ideas and get back to you guys.
  17. Does anyone have any more thoughts besides reformatting?
  18. Ok, thanks for claification. I set everything to what you said. No difference. Any more ideas?
  19. I ran the Norton removal tool. I don't know exactly what you mean by the general tab and changing the startup types. I'm in msconfig. Is that right? Thanks!
  20. As of today, I am using AVG. Yesterday, I removed Norton 06 and all of it's componants. I choose not to use other firewalls beside's Windows, however, if Windows firewall is ever turned off, then I will have to use something else. It is currently ON, but I do not have easy access to change it. I checked services. Everything you mentioned is running, but I'm not sure about automatic. How do I tell? The one thing that is NOT running is RPC Locator.
  21. Also, do you have an AIM SN? or would you mind jumping on the besttechie channel via Geeks to Go? Here is linkage: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?automodule=javairc
  22. Good idea. I just did, but Windows can't start the firewall service. Something like ICS or ISC service, I guess because it's in safe mode. I did safe mode with networking, but couldn't get online. I also noticed alot of things were disabled, like there wasn't any start menu and some things were just blank, such as Search. I did however make plenty of shortcuts to get to them again, such as Windows Firewall settings. Thoughts?
  23. That is exactly what I cannot do. The settings are grayed out, and it says that they are this way for my protection, under Group Policy.
  24. I am the Administrator, and the only account on the computer. The second article is only for SP1. I am running SP2. Any other thoughts?
