drag and drop :P

or from DOS

cd d: (cd drive letter)

copy i386 c:\ (copy folder to c)

c:\ (change back to c drive)

cd i386 (change to folder)

setup (run windows install i *think* could be different),

if you windows is already installed

Modify the registry to point to the hard disk copy of the original files. Modify the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion and modify the value SourcePath to the appropriate drive and directory. For example, C:\i386.

I was reading the this link sethook posted. it reffered to this key. I am not sure what one is the correct key. They seem to have conflicting info

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\setup

it also said to use this value

C:\

not

C:\i386

@marty: If you have xp is installed on D: then you will just use

D:\

if you look at the local key i quoted, it does accuratly show the location of where the i386 files are.

if you set it to c:\, then all the files MUST be in there.

The reason its C:\i386, is would to make it generic so if its 64bit, it would be C:\i686 etc.

marty that will work remember the : is very important, i dont know your reasons for ommitting it in your post.

when a friend installed xp pro while i was in hospital

for me

the drive letters got changed

i presume he

installed

with all the drives in the compt

2 hdds. cdrom. cdwr.

he is overseas at the moment

so i cant ask him

and as a result the drive letters got changed

my drive with xp installed is D:\

[i have since taken the spare hdd out ]

but it was assigned the letter C:\

which normally would have been the main drive

this is a wee bit over my head

my cdrom drive is F:\

and the cdwr is E:\

so im finding it difficult to

to comprehend the letter changes

that is why i had trouble with

the i386 folder

how ever ive been to the registry and changed the source path

from E:\[ cdrom] to D:\HDD

is there a way to change the drive letters dack to the default settings

with out reinstalling windows?

have i done this right?

You can change the drive letters however, things can "break" so once set its best to leave well enough alone.

I know having the non standard letters all changed is a bit "awkward" but, the sooner you get used to different letters and different setups the better.

For instance on this computer, my main drive is D, while C is my storage drive, then theres a H another hdd, and my DVD/CDS/Mounts are E, F and G.

If you want label each disk to help you remember, right click -> rename.
