I tend to over worry stuff that may never happen. I guess I am worrying that I will format a customers laptop, with the hopes of reinstalling windows, then realize the optical drive is bad. I would like to have on hand a universal optical drive that could be plugged into complete the reinstall. This would also be helpful to trouble shoot a problem. If you are getting errors while installing windows, you could figure out is the optical drive is the problem.

I have not had much of any experience with laptops. Do most optical drives come in a caddy, if so can they be removed from the caddy in the hopes of fitting them temporarly in most laptops. It would need to be Just secure enough to complete installing windows.

Do they make a cable that would allow you to keep the drive outside of the laptop while making the connection to the inside of the laptop(ide contoller)

I am just brainstorming, any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
