blim
Hi MartyYou have a new toy, eh?? You are amazing!!Not sure of the differences between Windows 98 and the SE flavors, but I looked up the minimum requirements in my Windows 98 book and it says:486DX, 66MHz or higher Processor16 MB RamHard Disk Space:Upgrade from W95 or 3.1 120-295MB (typically 195MB)New Installation FAT16 165-355MB (typically 225MB)New Installation FAT32 140-255MB (typically 175MB) *Now this stuff is why I like using the term gigawatt!!!!!*When we first got our PossessedGateway (Windows 98) we had 64 MB of Ram and it ran "normally" until Mcafee Antivirus added new features, then we ended up upgrading to 256 Ram. We have a 10 gigawatt hard drive.I'll warn you, though, if you do add Ram, shop carefully!! We discovered old Ram is cheap, really old Ram gets more expensive (like cars going from old to classic, I guess)Hope this helped.Liz
martymas
hi liz the reasom i posted was to see how far i could push this thing. with a miniumall amount of resources.i read somewhere to run win98se you needed at least 2.5 gig hdd and at least .70 to 80 mg oram now if i didnt need those updates it would fit easly but wmp9 alone accounts for 13.8 megs of ram but ive got it on.and i see by your info i have the right amount resources but it was probably written before all these up datesnow my Q. is the name of the ram eddo i might increase the ram. so i can give it to my grand daughter. the other problem. i have im not sure if this win98se disk is a legal copy. or not. tho i dont think microsoft are pushing this barrow. because at one stage, they were going to stop supporting it.and you would have been able to down load it from their website. but i see now they are selling it to the chows so they are making money on it for nothing .which means we get vista cheaper of course im dreaming. since ive been using compt ive never advanced this far but between swear words and cursing compts ive got it going.i have to say between techtv c.f.h and here. of learned a little bit. i have 2 grand sons who can build and maintain compts so the young of today are so much tech minded than we were .the important thing about these boardsis the incouragement we get from these boards for to go a bit further as your post indicates.now of course we have hand helds which do the same thing as compt but are 350 times smaller god were will it end thanks for postingmarty . blim
Arrrggghhh!! I had written an entire reply, the power flickered, and the computer restarted!!!Anyways, Marty, I figured you were wondering if you were over taxing the computer and I figured if I posted the minimum requirements, you or someone could figure out how much you could do!! Kind of half an answer. You should probably add more Ram if you're giving it to Granddaughter as kids multi task!! And what a great gift!!! I know nothing about Ram (ordered it from Gateway and my nephew installed it before he moved away!)And I wouldn't worry whether the disk is legal or not, Windows98 is too old for MS to monkey with, and as long as you can get it updated, you're ok!Now to post this before the electricity flickers again!! Ahhh, Michigan! And it's not storming or windy or anything. Go figure.Liz
robroy
That would be Edo ram, if you have a comp store that recycles old parts then they could probably find you some. you will need to know what speed the ram is. You can use Belarc advisor or everest to find that
bearskin
marty...you should be fine with the ram...now the hard drive is a different story...win98 disk defrag will need some space to run...probably about 10% of your disk size...personally myself I have never bothered with all the updates and critical patches...is win98 legal? no problem there as one key will work most of the time....I have a drawing program that I use on a winme machine...200MHz-32 megs ram- 2 gig hard drive...no problem.
