Bank of America is working to identify the origin of account thefts reported in Michigan over the weekend.

According to news reports from Detroit, thousands of Bank of America customers might be affected by a breach that resulted in withdrawals from their accounts. Bank of America told reporters that the breach involves more than $100,000 worth of transactions. The bank issued temporary debit cards to customers who discovered money was missing from their accounts, according to the reports. Two bank staffers said they were also victims of this crime.

Bank of America said in a statement that it is contacting customers in the area where most of the breaches occurred. "In the event that a skimming device has been used, we are reaching out to those customers to block their cards," the statement said.

The bank is uncertain as to whether the accounts were hacked into internally, or if someone outside the company committed the crime, according to the reports. The bank also is unsure whether the problem is limited to Michigan, or if customers across the nation are affected.
