Tsunami Warning Last Night...after Quake

Recommended Posts

Sure am glad the 7.0 quake off of Northern California coast about 7:50 last night, wasn't a bad subduction fault one. And that it didn't do any tsunami waves. The alert was for entire West Coast for a possible tsunami. The paper today said the warning was lifted at 9:09 and some news reports said an hour or two later.

Unfortunately the warnings didn't get to all the people on the coast, not even in all the towns. Some areas don't have sirens, some have nonworking ones, some don't even think there is a potential problem it seems from news reports quoting various town/county government people today. Some areas waited 15 minutes or longer to even issue a warning. Duh!!! With a close in to shore quake like that one, that is about all the time it could take for a wave to hit the beach...15 to 30 minutes. And getting people moved to high ground is hard to do even when not in a panic and takes time. So the officials wasted time talking about if they should sound any kind of alarm warning or not. Duh!!!

Washington didn't have it any better, the NOAA weather and hazard alert system failed due to a phone line being down to Coast Guard.

Washington tsunami warning problems

Here is a more complete story from the Oregonian.

Quake and Tsunami Alert last night

I sure hope the sirens are fixed, more added where needed, and evacuation routes clearly posted everywhere. It will probably need federal money to do all this, and to force the towns/counties to get off their butts and do whatever it takes to have people warned in time to try to evacuate to high ground.

I am ashamed of our state for not doing this alot sooner.

I pray that we never have either a big quake or a tsunami.

God bless everyone.

Nope we are a hundred miles from the coast, with a small mountain range in between.

But we do go to the beach at least once a year. Usually park the motorhome in Cape Disappointment state park in SW Washington (Ilwaco) right next to the ocean beach. So it has a very narrow, steep, road to high ground, no phone at that end of campground which is a mile of so from park ranger station. No cell phone service there either. So sitting ducks, unless anyone would feel the earth shaking to know there was trouble.

So we leave it all in God's hands to protect us, and provide for all our needs there and everywhere.

Yep, I'm back, testing the waters (no pun intended!) here so to speak.

God bless everyone.
