jimras
Gee, I remember those days.Windows 3.1 ran llike a program and not an operating system,The commands to start 3.1 were:at the c:> promptcd windows (or change to whatever directory it was in)winmost people at that time made a little batch file to start it if you didn't have a menu program that would do it for you.I might have a set of disks for 3.1 around somewhere if you find that you have a corrupted file. martymas
hey thanks for posting i can get the 3.1 screen then it goes back to dos with the message there was an error in the progman.ese im not sure what this means ive tried typing win at the prompt but it revert backs to that message what ever i type i even tried typing win / and i tried devery letter in the alpha beton one of them [i cant remember wich one]it let me check the disk and when it finished itm said it repaired 44 clusters i think, it was going so fast i didnt get time to read it .so im at a stale mate i went to a site for 3.1 for help but it didnt give me what i wanted i went to trade me on the net but there werent any 3.1 for sale that is a local site just like ebay is there any site i can go and install 3.1 to a cd ide like to have a go at it winxp spoils my compt thinking it is so simple but 3.1 and dos is a challenge marty
JSKY
If jimras can't find his 3.1 floppies. I still have mine. PM me and well figure out a good way to get you a copy of them.
robroy
progman.exe is the program manager that windows 3.1 used and if it has a problem then you would probably be able to delete the file and reinstall a new copy. You would have to do it from dos, from the c: prompt cd windowsdir/w/p (this will allow you to page through the windows directory to make sure the file is there)if it is theredel progman.exeif you have the replacement copy on a floppy disk, thencopy A:\progman.exethat should fix it. Someone with a copy should be able to send it to you as an attachment. I don't have any 3.1 disks any morethen reboot the computerjsky you should be able to just send a copy of progman.exe as an attachmentIt was a common problem that it got corrupted from what I remember
JSKY
Yes, that would be no problem to do. Just waiting to see if martymas has it going or needs it.

bearskin
marty..let me know if you need the win 3.1 disks...they are downloadable off the net. I admire you for wanting to deal with win 3.1. I used win 3.1 to surf the net up until 1998. just a warning tho, brush up on your dos commands before you get into this. I would probably use it now but my satellite provider doesn't support win 3.1.
martymas
at last ive installed win3.1 many long hours of swearing and huffing and puffing and swearing i got it going at last the reason im posting is i have some people to thank in particular jsky and bearskinand me of course but with out every bodys input i would have been up the creek.the problem i have now is i patted my self on the back and bloody near put my shoulder out of joint but it is an early version of windows and i must point out on a compt that has limited resourcesi dont know how to find all the specs at this stage.i aim to see if i can get it on dial upit has files for that reason and i have a spare modem so wish me luck all who posted and ile get back as i progress maybe some one else wants to try it it is better than being a hacker. marty

There isn't much security in that program and almost (as you've found out ) no support for it, either.Just curious...........Jim

Thank you for answering and God Bless You for doing this for her!! You are a truly a Good Samaritan. And as far as therapy goes, computing is an excellent therapy for the mind and the body. Thank you for doing this for her. Liz

JSKY
Glad you have it up and running. But I know you learned allot from the the work involved. And getting through 3.1 is one good start!!!Nowadays people forget how 3.1 used to be, or never even seen it. It had it's simple parts, But Win 95 made all the hard parts usable, and simplified the rest. And two thumbs up for helping out your friend!!!
