Google Chrome 4.0.213.1 Released

With the usual long list of fixes & updates.

Google is pushing update after update of its Chrome browser and, at the regular pace, a week since the last dev channel release we've got Chrome 4.0.213.1 with the usual extensive set of fixes and updates. The only new feature, if you can call it that, is the revamped FTP code. Hopefully, this latest build won't have any of the problems of the previous release, which required two additional updates to fix some major issues.

The new FTP code is now available for all platforms but there is still an issue that hasn't been fixed so, when navigating an FTP server that requires authentication, users are asked for their credentials every time they move to a new location. On Windows the new release fixes some issues with the drop down selection boxes. There is a long list of fixes for the Mac version, which is still at version 4.0.212.1.

"Fix crashy toolstrips. Audio and video tag doesn't work for extension resources. Fix an issue where we do not initiate the extension install UI with certain combinations of HTTP headers. Introduce chrome.tabs.executeScriptInTab() and chrome.tabs.insertCSSInTab(). Hide the mole handle by default. Remove the right-click devtools behavior. Add CSS classes to the document when switching between toolstrip and mole mode," Jonathan Conradt, engineering program manager, wrote about the extension fixes.

The "--show-extensions-on-top" switch now works like it should on Windows so Google is encouraging users to give it a spin. Along with the new features introduced last week, extensions are really starting to look fleshed out. The sync library is now built entirely from the trunk hopefully eliminating the problems that plagued the latest release, which would crash if sync was enabled. Being a developer release there are still some known issues Google is working on.
