Peaches
LaCie Unveils Portable DVD Burner The Portable DVD RW is aimed at owners of notebooks or netbooks without optical drives. By Antone Gonsalves InformationWeek September 18, 2009 01:23 PM The Portable DVD RW comes in two versions, one with Creator Suite 10 for Windows, the other with the same software plus Toast 9 Basic for the Mac. Both products are older versions of Sonic Solution's Roxio multimedia software. The 8x LaCie drive has a black finish and is less than an inch high. The device weighs 10 ounces and is USB bus-powered. In addition, the drive is equipped with LightScribe, a technology that enables the user to burn silkscreen-quality labels directly onto CDs and DVDs with a laser. LaCie is marketing the device at owners of notebooks or netbooks without optical drives, such as Apple's MacBook Air. By excluding an optical drive, Apple was able to produce its lightest, thinnest, and most mobile full-featured laptop. "With the popularity of lightweight laptop computers and netbook solutions, which often exclude optical drives, users need an ultra-portable DVDRW solution that will allow them to play, save, and share their multimedia collections," Christelle Dexet, mutimedia product manager at LaCie, said in a statement. LaCie Portable DVD RW, released Thursday, costs $120 for the Mac version and $90 for the Windows model.
