Twitter hit by denial-of-service attack

At approximately 15:00 GMT, the popular Twitter microblogging service website and API that powers various Twitter clients went down. According to Twitter's status web page, the service has been hit by a massive denial-of-service attack (DoS).

The service has been down for over two hours and the team are still "continuing to defend against and recover from this attack". The status blog updates advise that the site should be back online, but some users are still encountering problems accessing the homepage. No additional details about the attack have been provided.
