martymas
hi team i posted this on another board and i get plenty of answers .but none solved my problemi have this very old compt .the specs says pentium [R].i cant get the bios to keep my settings and i understand the battery needs to be renewed .the battery has been discribed as the shape of a round coin.no wher can i find any thing resembling a coin .so i presume because of the age of the compt it must be some other shape.i have win98se installed and it goes fine im even on the net with it .but when i close the sys down.on boot up i have to go to the bios and reset the checksun. error and i have to enable the master and primary drive to boot upsome one the other post suggested my battery is the fault.any ideas marty
murtu52
if i'm not mistaken, i remember my dad telling me that the battery located on the motherboard is to keep the time. It should be a small, round part, usually set in a plastic holder, a bit bigger than a nickel, if all batteries are the same; most of them i've seen are that size. mikex
"Most" batteries look like a quarter. Some older ones may look like a capacitor or dbl A battery, but not quite as long. Try to find the manual online from the mobo maker. this should tell you where the batteries connectors and jumpers are located.M
bearskin
the battery on the mamaboard also hold the bios setup..although pentium boards usually have a round silver battery...the old 286-386-486 boards sometimes had the long oval battery that was soldered to wires. martymas
hi team when i got this compt my task was to try and get it internet ready ok ive done that. but the battery thing has got me stumped ive had the mobo.out of the case but i dant find any thing which looks like a bat.i asked the owner for documentation. but he said he bought it from.a second sale so im stumped .there are several cubed shaped components.but which is the battery.sure the machine is old and probably not worth perservereing with for me it is an achevement to get it in working order .i may have to take the mother board to a compt outlet and see if they can identify the batide like to find it and do the the task myself .some of you suggested if the bat isnt coin shaped it may be an oval shaped but ive looked and cant find any like that however thanks for trying to help.and ile keep you posted on my progress.thanks again marty

bearskin
batteries usually have a + and - sign plus voltage and amps. might have to get a magnifier to look at this stuff. the ones I've seen are usually by the power supply.
mikeyb
Hi there,I would just like to add my 2 cents. Has this machine EVER booted without the error? you say it is a second hand machine, maybe the battery is not on the motherboard and it was sold without one!this would explain the fact that you cannot see the battery! try looking for a plastic bit on the motherboardThis is an image of the disc battery holder, you will see how the battery clips into place and it sits in usually a black plastic bit that rises slightly from the surface of the mobothe second image is of what a battery looks like whn it is out of the mobo housing.some older batteries are in a barrel shape similar to this image (taken from an amiga)or this one.. battery on the right of picture.hope this helpmikeyb
