JSKY
SP1 will be available through Microsoft Windows Update (WU).Windows Automatic Updates will normally automatically update your machine each night for several days with the prerequisites and then offer Service Pack 1. This will be done in four steps. Prier to the SP1 download, everyone will get three required updates to prepare for SP1.You will have to install all pending “Important†updates and reboot. You may have to do this several times to get fully up to date.To reduce the number of reboots required to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1, the prerequisite packages will be released to Windows Vista customers through WU prior to the release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1. These prerequisite packages will be coupled with other updates that are applicable to Windows Vista RTM systems and require a reboot. Consequently, the systems that are getting updates through automatic updates will already have prerequisites installed at the time of the SP1 release and be directly offered SP1 through WU.Updating For Vista SP1The first update will be KB935509, This is the first pre-requisite install and will require a reboot. The second update will be KB937287, which will not need to be rebooted. The third update KB938371, will also require a system reboot. Now everything will be ready for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330). Downloading Service Pack 1 takes around 30 minutes to fully download (on high speed cable). From starting the SP1 install to reboot and finally the desktop takes from about Half an Hour to an Hour and a Half, depending on your system configuration. (Half an hour just for the reboot itself. (The configuring update before reboot, and the configuring update after rebooting)). I would suggest the following before the installation of Service Pack 1.Before Installing SP1:Clean up all your browsers by:· Deleting Internet files· Delete Cookies· Cleaning out History FilesPrepare your Computer by:· Running Disk Cleanup· Empty the Recycle Bin · Defrag the Hard Drive· Turn off your Anti-Virus Program· Turn off your Firewall · Disable Spybot S&D Resident Shield and Tea Timer· Turning off any and all Anti-Spyware/Malware Protection. (ie. AdAware, AVG Anti-Spyware, Windows Defender, etc)After the installation of SP1:· Reboot your Computer fully three times to get everything worked in.· Run Disk Cleanup· Defrag your Hard Drive· Restart your Anti-Virus Protection· Restart your Firewall· Restart Spybot S&D Resident Shield and Tea Timer· Turn on all your other Anti-Spyware/Malware Protection· Reboot your Computer one last time to enable all your programsA lot of SP1s features are in greater security and program compatibility for third party software. Also hosting many new drivers for hardware. SP1 has many Vista Hot fixes that have been out. But some never really offered through Windows Update.
Snakeyes11
I haven't tried this yet. The only machine in my house that runs Windows Vista is my Acer Aspire 5100 Laptop. So I will run the Service Pack when I get the chance. Thank you for the tips. They seemed to be very good and I hope they work.
