There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."Also, when I go to Sound and Audio Device Properties (i.e.control panel --> sound & audio -->volume) it says "no sound device".I tried taking it to a computer service place, and even though I gave them specific things to fix, they just search it for viruses (of course coming up with nothing) and didn't fix any of my problems. Subsequently, I've tried researching the problem myself but to avail - I was gonna try and download updates for my sound card, or something, but don't know where to go. garmanma Posted March 15, 2007 Report Share Posted March 15, 2007 (edited) Go to Control Panel>System>click on the Hardware tab> Select Device Manager. Click on the "+" next to sound and audio, so it will expand the tree. Look for any yellow exclamation marks. You should most likely remove your sound device and reboot the computer. Did they tell you why they did not try and fix the issue you needed fixed, just curiousAs Mark stated, you probably just need to let windows reinstall the drivers. If windows is unable to reinstall them after you deleted them, you may have to install them from scratch. I was a real newbie and struggled for days and days to get it working, with the help of several folks who post here now. (from TTV/G4) Ended up buying a new card. I've been back there a couple of times and they've just apologised, etc. I'm just sick of having to keep going back and forths, and no improvements being made. But, i still have to go back once more because when i got home i notice my restart button missing - so, i'm gonna go give them shit about that.in relation to the solution - if i do uninstall the sound device, and it doesn't work, could i just system restore to get back to where we were. also, which one do i uninstall - there are quite a few devices under sound and audio. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting automatically. 2. Click Start, and then click Run. 3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK. 4. martymas Posted March 17, 2007 Report Share Posted March 17, 2007 it took me some time before i got it right it is if you can copy and past the last line it all helps when you reboot and xp finds the drivers after uninstalling them check your sound and audio devices and see if it is still greyed outor has a check mark in the box just take your time the fix is from microsoft i used to have a corrupted sound card and if i reininstalled or had a crsh this was the method i used to get it back just take your time some times you only have to get the gaps or the line slightly wrong and you have to start againgood luck dont forget after each line press enterwhen the sys tells you it has been extractedgo to audio and sound and check that box and a volume icon will appear in your task barthen you can double click it and set your sound propertiesmarty Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I think this page below lists 4 different choices that may work for your computer. I believe they all contain the same driver, but different control panels. A reinstall is not that much work(you could do it yourself), a few hours and your computer will be running like brand new. I am really surprised the shop you brought it to did not recommend that.
