Hi guys,

Here's the msg everytime I try to play a sound file:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

Also, when I go to Sound and Audio Device Properties (i.e.control panel --> sound & audio -->volume) it says "no sound device".

I tried taking it to a computer service place, and even though I gave them specific things to fix, they just search it for viruses (of course coming up with nothing) and didn't fix any of my problems. Subsequently, I've tried researching the problem myself but to avail - I was gonna try and download updates for my sound card, or something, but don't know where to go. As such, I've included a Belarc Report (below), hopefully giving you all the information you need.

Go to Control Panel>System>click on the Hardware tab> Select Device Manager. Click on the "+" next to sound and audio, so it will expand the tree. Look for any yellow exclamation marks. You should most likely remove your sound device and reboot the computer. Wiindows will then reinstall the device

I tried taking it to a computer service place, and even though I gave them specific things to fix, they just search it for viruses (of course coming up with nothing) and didn't fix any of my problems.
Incompetence. Did they tell you why they did not try and fix the issue you needed fixed, just curious

As Mark stated, you probably just need to let windows reinstall the drivers. If windows is unable to reinstall them after you deleted them, you may have to install them from scratch. What model computer do you have, i am having trouble finding the driver based on your belarc output?

My "on board" sound device went kaput in just over a year in my Dell. I was a real newbie and struggled for days and days to get it working, with the help of several folks who post here now. (from TTV/G4) Ended up buying a new card.

Here's a link to Intel's site for troubleshooting your system's audio. You can also download new drivers there. If for some reason, you cannot repair the onboard audio, you can always disable it in the BIOS and buy a sound card, as a last resort

lol. nope they never gave a reason why they didn't fix the problems. I've been back there a couple of times and they've just apologised, etc. I'm just sick of having to keep going back and forths, and no improvements being made. But, i still have to go back once more because when i got home i notice my restart button missing - so, i'm gonna go give them shit about that.

in relation to the solution - if i do uninstall the sound device, and it doesn't work, could i just system restore to get back to where we were. also, which one do i uninstall - there are quite a few devices under sound and audio.

you could just uninstall them all. upon next reboot they should reinstall automatically. If something goes wrong and system restore is working properly, it should roll things back to the way they were. Just before doing it, I would make a new restore point.

I uninstalled the Audio Device and it reinstalled itself automatically. However, the problem is still present.

expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe----

Note that there is a space between "ex_" and "system_root" in this command.

For example, if your computer's CD-ROM drive is drive E, and the folder that contains the Windows system files is C:\Windows, type the following lines at the command prompt (pressing ENTER after each line):

e:

cd i386

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

5. Type exit to quit the command prompt.

6. Verify that you can start Volume Control and that the Volume icon is displayed in the notification area (if you selected this option).

I followed all of the steps (except I didn't really know what step 6 was asking). Nothing's changed

did you insert your xpcd

because the sys extracts the

the folder from the cd and transfers it to the compt

this is the line you need to get right

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

d:

cd i386

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the ony other way is to use the repair console

marty

Yeh I did have the cd in whilst I performed those steps. I'll just try it again - just in case i did something wrong

ok the greyed area means your volume icon need to be reinstalled

if it was a driver there would be a yellow ? mark beside the card

ok to reinstall the volume

go to start run in the run box type cmd

in the black screen type this

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows XP compact disc to the system_root\System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting automatically.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.

4. Type the following lines at the command prompt, pressing ENTER after each line, where CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM, and system_root is the path and folder name where the Windows system files are located (generally C:\Windows):

find your cd drive letter which will be d:or e: press enter

type

cd 1386

press enter

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------copy and paste this line at the prompt--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe----

press enter---------------------------------

I did it again. And it did what you said it would do. But the problem still remains

it took me some time before i got it right

it is if you can copy and past the last line it all helps

when you reboot and xp finds the drivers

after uninstalling them check your sound and

audio devices and see if it is still greyed out

or has a check mark in the box

just take your time the fix is from microsoft

i used to have a corrupted sound card

and if i reininstalled or had a crsh this was the method i used

to get it back

just take your time

some times you only have to get the gaps or

the line slightly wrong and you have to start again

good luck

dont forget after each line press enter

when the sys tells you it has been extracted

go to audio and sound and check that box

and a volume icon will appear in your task bar

then you can double click it and set your sound properties

That appears like it worked correctly. If that did not fix your problem, you should try and reinstall the drivers. I think this page below lists 4 different choices that may work for your computer. I believe they all contain the same driver, but different control panels. Set a restore point and take a logical guess, and try one of the 4 packages listed at the bottom

Considering the other problems you have had with this computer, if you still have no luck, you might want to start over from scratch if that's an option. I'd rather see you solve the problem, but keep that option open if it's possible

That was my thought, especially with the "restart" greyed out(or missing). A reinstall is not that much work(you could do it yourself), a few hours and your computer will be running like brand new. I am really surprised the shop you brought it to did not recommend that. It would have solved your problem and made them some good money.

yes ime afraid i have to agree with you mark

the danger of course is it may be a hard ware issue

and restore or reinstall wont fix the problem

that dam fix it shop cant have many customers

the way they have treated the user

ime not sure if a repair will fix it or not

the fix i posted will work but it has to be typed in right

and for some new users find it a daunting task

more so working in the command prompt
