shanenin
I am back to using gnome, and the file manager, nautilus. The default behavior when navigating using it is to open a new window for every directory change. If I need to go three or four levels down, I end up with 3 or 4 open windows. Is their a way to change the settings that don't open multiple windows(like kde and explorer do by default)? This is not a big deal, 90% of the time I use the shell to look at files, but on occasion I like to point and click.
jcl
Run gconf-editor. Check /apps/nautilus/preferences/always_use_browser.Alternatively, leave it in spatial mode and use double-middle-click to open directories.
shanenin
thanks, the "always use browser" option works nice. You would think that would be the default setting. It seems more natural, but I guess that is just because I am used to using windows explorer or konqueror.
jcl
thanks, the "always use browser" option works nice. You would think that would be the default setting. It was until... erm, GNOME 2.... something. Ah, 2.6. Then they adopted the MacOS-style spatial file manager. It's supposed to be more usable. And it may well be but since I disabled it immediately I don't know. It isn't a feature I miss from my Mac days. Edited December 4, 2006 by jcl
shanenin
Thats interesting. I guess I have heard the term "spatial file manager", but never took the time to read or understand what it meant. I am sure I could get used to it, but don't really want to.
